Load Determination, Strengthening, And Behavior Study Of Prestressed Concrete Channel Bridge Girders In South Carolina, Elhussien Khaled Elbatanouny Oct 2023

Load Determination, Strengthening, And Behavior Study Of Prestressed Concrete Channel Bridge Girders In South Carolina, Elhussien Khaled Elbatanouny

Theses and Dissertations

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is currently engaged in a multi-year effort to assess the structural integrity of its inventory of over 9,000 bridges. This assessment process is expected to result in an increase in the number of bridges that require load postings, repairs, or replacements across South Carolina. This could potentially lead to adverse economic repercussions due to restricted truck routes, bridge closures, repair work, and the need for bridge replacements. To alleviate the escalating costs associated with these challenges, it is imperative to explore methods aimed at reducing the need for load postings and bridge closures …

Aesthetic Coatings For Concrete Bridge Components, Brent Kriha Dec 2016

Aesthetic Coatings For Concrete Bridge Components, Brent Kriha

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis evaluated the durability and aesthetic performance of coating systems for utilization in concrete bridge applications. The principle objectives of this thesis were: 1) Identify aesthetic coating systems appropriate for concrete bridge applications; 2) Evaluate the performance of the selected systems through a laboratory testing regimen; 3) Develop guidelines for coating selection, surface preparation, and application.

A series of site visits to various bridges throughout the State of Wisconsin provided insight into the performance of common coating systems and allowed problematic structural details to be identified. To aid in the selection of appropriate coating systems, questionnaires were distributed to …

Reliability Of Bridge Superstructures In Wisconsin, Azam Nabizadehdarabi Aug 2015

Reliability Of Bridge Superstructures In Wisconsin, Azam Nabizadehdarabi

Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

RELIABILITY OF BRIDGE SUPERSTRUCTURES IN WISCONSIN

by

Azam Nabizadehdarabi

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2015

Under the Supervision of Professor Habib Tabatabai

Bridge reliability analyses form the basis of modern bridge design provisions. Such analyses are also used to evaluate bridge condition and assess future maintenance needs. The majority of these reliability assessments are based on evaluating risks associated with the various load effects exceeding their corresponding resistance. However, bridge components such as decks and superstructures typically do not reach the end of their service lives by exceeding the strength limit states (structural failure). Survival analyses, which are commonly used …

System For Detection Of Defects In Cables Of Bridge Structures, Emad Ismail Abdel Salam May 2013

System For Detection Of Defects In Cables Of Bridge Structures, Emad Ismail Abdel Salam

Theses and Dissertations

Over the last 75 years, many cable-supported bridges have been built in America, Europe, Asia and other parts of the world. However, over the years these bridges have aged and been exposed to environmental conditions such as rain, snow, de-icing and harmful chemicals. These conditions cause various levels of deterioration in bridges, particularly corrosion. Corrosion causes a loss of cross-section in the steel, adversely affecting the bridge's capacity to carry its service loads, and can possibly cause bridge failures. Although many methods have been attempted to inspect these bridges, most have offered limited success. In the recent years, it has …

Effect Of Initial Scarification And Overlay Treatment Timing On Chloride Concentrations In Concrete Bridge Decks, Curtis Daniel Nolan Nov 2008

Effect Of Initial Scarification And Overlay Treatment Timing On Chloride Concentrations In Concrete Bridge Decks, Curtis Daniel Nolan

Theses and Dissertations

Considering the pervasive presence of chlorides in concrete bridge decks, bridge engineers have a critical responsibility to perform proper and effective preventive maintenance and rehabilitation operations. Bridge engineers often perform scarification and overlay (SO) procedures on concrete bridge decks to minimize the corrosion of reinforcing steel due to chloride ingress. Given the need to develop guidelines for the initial timing of SO treatments, the specific objectives of this research were to collect information from several department of transportation (DOT) personnel about their SO procedures and, subsequently, to determine the recommended timing of initial SO procedures on concrete bridge decks for …

Impact Of Jet Grouting On The Lateral Strength Of Soil Surrounding Driven Pile Foundations, Matthew E. Adsero Apr 2008

Impact Of Jet Grouting On The Lateral Strength Of Soil Surrounding Driven Pile Foundations, Matthew E. Adsero

Theses and Dissertations

Jet grouting was used to strengthen the soft soil surrounding the piles and the pile cap of two full-scale driven pile foundations. Soilcrete columns, created by jet grouting, were placed underneath the pile cap and surrounding the piles of the first foundation. Two rows of soilcrete columns were placed around the perimeter of one-side of the second. All of the jet grouting took place after construction of the pile caps. Laboratory testing of the soilcrete slurry showed the columns as having a design unconfined compressive strength of 550-650 psi, compared with the native soil strength of only 6-8 psi (850-1150 …
