Acoustic-Emission Monitoring Of Lap Joint Fatigue Cracks, Siddharth Kannan Oct 2023

Acoustic-Emission Monitoring Of Lap Joint Fatigue Cracks, Siddharth Kannan

Theses and Dissertations

Structural integrity is a pivotal consideration in the field of engineering applications, and understanding the behavior of materials and joints under various loading conditions is critical. This thesis presents a novel approach to detect and analyze fatigue induced cracks in various test specimens using Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors. This approach is widely used in Structural Health Monitoring applications involving acoustic emissions that can be captured using PWAS which in turn gives the surface response to applied stresses. The ultimate goal of the research is to identify the length of a fatigue crack originating from lap joints and to develop a …

Gaseous Fuel Combustion In A Small Turbojet, Katherine A. Ashton Mar 2023

Gaseous Fuel Combustion In A Small Turbojet, Katherine A. Ashton

Theses and Dissertations

This project set out to test the suitability of natural gas as an aviation fuel by comparing how a small turbojet performed when run on traditional jet fuel versus methane. A JetCat P400, originally designed for jet fuel, was modified to run on methane. The modifications made did not succeed at getting the engine to run at normal operating speed on methane, but did get the engine to run at normal operating speeds using ethylene and ethane. It was determined a fuel and air mixing problem was hindering the engine performance when run on methane Future studies improving the fuel …

Assessing The Feasibility Of A Biofilter In Medium-To-High Scale Industries, Javier A. Garcia May 2021

Assessing The Feasibility Of A Biofilter In Medium-To-High Scale Industries, Javier A. Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

The removal of volatile organic compounds, VOCs, from contaminated sources of air stream has become a major air pollution risk. Excessive amounts discharged to the atmosphere are highly risky to human health and to the environmental system. Demand for sustainable VOC control technologies has become crucial for the reduction of emissions. Biological treatments of waste gas streams, such as biofiltration, have proven to be cost effective and environmentally friendly compared to conventional pollution control technologies. The goal of this research is to simulate data for a given biofilter model, and to evaluate if it is economically and environmentally feasible to …

Effect Of Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Adoption On Gas Tax Revenue, Local Pollution, And Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Neil Mccall Mar 2016

Effect Of Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Adoption On Gas Tax Revenue, Local Pollution, And Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Neil Mccall

Theses and Dissertations

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) are likely to increase in popularity in the near future. However, the environmental benefits of PHEVs involve tradeoffs between the benefits of reduced tailpipe emissions against the drawbacks of increased emissions at marginal electric generation plants and reduced gasoline tax income. In this report, a model is developed that will enable these tradeoffs to be studied. The model accounts for local commuting patterns and marginal electric generation in New Jersey. The result allows the effect of PHEV adoption on gasoline tax, CO2, NOx and SOx to be predicted on a county level. Sample calculations are …
