Integrated Modeling And Monitoring For A Healthy And Sustainable Building Environment, Yifang Xu
Integrated Modeling And Monitoring For A Healthy And Sustainable Building Environment, Yifang Xu
Doctoral Dissertations
The transmission of airborne diseases indoors is a significant challenge to public health. Buildings are hotspots for viral transmission, which can result in adverse effects on human health and quality of life, especially considering that individuals spend approximately 87% of their time indoors. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of considering health aspects during the development of sustainable built environments. Consequently, maintaining a healthy, sustainable, and comfortable built environment represents a major challenge for facilities management teams. However, research on the infection risks associated with emerging pandemics is still in its infancy, and the effectiveness of …
Polymer Based Energy Storage And Thermal Management On Textile Devices, Wesley A. Viola
Polymer Based Energy Storage And Thermal Management On Textile Devices, Wesley A. Viola
Doctoral Dissertations
Humans developed textiles to manage thermal energy transfer with the environment and support homeostasis in a wide range of climates. With the anticipation of wearable technologies to transform healthcare via early, pre-symptomatic detection of illness, there is now a demand for electrical energy storage to support such on-body devices. Finding energy materials to merge seamlessly with textiles is basic requirement to ensure widespread adoption of wearable health monitors. Here we use a vapor deposition process to conformally coat ordinary fabrics with the doped conjugated polymer poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT-Cl), a soft material which possesses electronic and redox capabilities. We demonstrate PEDOT-Cl …
Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage, Kedar Prashant Shete
Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage, Kedar Prashant Shete
Doctoral Dissertations
Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems can be used to reduce electric demand when used in conjunction with Combined Heat and Power Plants or HVAC(Heating, Ventilation, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning), as they can regulate the demand and supply of thermal energy. They can also be used to integrate renewable energy sources with the grid. A design procedure and performance modeling is required for designing and using thermal energy storage systems effectively. We propose hypotheses about the performance of an LHTES device with different operating conditions and material properties, for devices that are governed by different modes of heat transfer. We …
Modeling Portfolios Of Low Carbon Energy Generation Under Deep Uncertainty, Franklyn Kanyako
Modeling Portfolios Of Low Carbon Energy Generation Under Deep Uncertainty, Franklyn Kanyako
Doctoral Dissertations
In the 2015 Paris Agreement, nearly every country pledge through the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) increased adoption of low carbon energy technologies in their energy system. However, allocating investments to different low carbon energy technologies under rising demand for energy and budget constraints, uncertain technical change in these technologies involves maneuvering significant uncertainties among experts, models, and decision-makers. We examine the interactions of low carbon energy sources (LCES) under the condition of deep uncertainty. Deep uncertainty directly impacts the understanding of the role of low carbon energy technologies in climate change mitigation and how much R&D investment should be allocated …
Next Generation Energy Storage: An Examination Of Lignin-Based Carbon Composite Anodes For Sodium Ion Batteries Through Modeling And Simulation, Dayton G. Kizzire
Next Generation Energy Storage: An Examination Of Lignin-Based Carbon Composite Anodes For Sodium Ion Batteries Through Modeling And Simulation, Dayton G. Kizzire
Doctoral Dissertations
The current energy market relies heavily on fossil fuel sources; however, we are amidst a momentous shift towards wind, solar, and water based renewable energies. Large-scale energy storage allows renewable energy to be stored and supply the grid with consistent energy despite changing weather conditions. Improvements to large-scale energy storage in terms of cost, safety, and sustainability are crucial to wide-scale adoption. A promising candidate for large-scale energy storage are sodium-ion batteries using hard carbon anodes. Sodium is globally available, cheaper, and more sustainable than lithium, but requires a different anode structure. A sustainable hard carbon anode with excellent Li-ion …
Infrastructure Systems Modeling Using Data Visualization And Trend Extraction, Jacob Marshal Hale
Infrastructure Systems Modeling Using Data Visualization And Trend Extraction, Jacob Marshal Hale
Doctoral Dissertations
“Current infrastructure systems modeling literature lacks frameworks that integrate data visualization and trend extraction needed for complex systems decision making and planning. Critical infrastructures such as transportation and energy systems contain interdependencies that cannot be properly characterized without considering data visualization and trend extraction.
This dissertation presents two case analyses to showcase the effectiveness and improvements that can be made using these techniques. Case one examines flood management and mitigation of disruption impacts using geospatial characteristics as part of data visualization. Case two incorporates trend analysis and sustainability assessment into energy portfolio transitions.
Four distinct contributions are made in this …
Software-Defined Infrastructure For Iot-Based Energy Systems, Stephen Lee
Software-Defined Infrastructure For Iot-Based Energy Systems, Stephen Lee
Doctoral Dissertations
Internet of Things (IoT) devices are becoming an essential part of our everyday lives. These physical devices are connected to the internet and can measure or control the environment around us. Further, IoT devices are increasingly being used to monitor buildings, farms, health, and transportation. As these connected devices become more pervasive, these devices will generate vast amounts of data that can be used to gain insights and build intelligence into the system. At the same time, large-scale deployment of these devices will raise new challenges in efficiently managing and controlling them. In this thesis, I argue that the IoT …
Electricity And Fuel Consumption In A Lean Energy Supply Chain, Mostafa Ghafoorivarzaneh
Electricity And Fuel Consumption In A Lean Energy Supply Chain, Mostafa Ghafoorivarzaneh
Doctoral Dissertations
Human activities are the main sources of environmental pollution. Awareness about this fact, motivated us to make changes in different paradigms of our lives including industrial or personal activities. Environmental activities assumed to have conflict with financial objectives, in this study we try to align business requirements with environmental concerns.
Among all human activities, generating energy has the most negative impact on the environment. The major part of the generated energy will be consumed in transportation and industrial demand which makes them the most effective targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emission. In a lean environment, small batch sizes …
Role Of Low Carbon Energy Technologies In Near Term Energy Policy, Olaitan P. Olaleye
Role Of Low Carbon Energy Technologies In Near Term Energy Policy, Olaitan P. Olaleye
Doctoral Dissertations
In the first part of this thesis, we use a multi-model framework to examine a set of possible future energy scenarios resulting from R&D portfolios of Solar, Nuclear, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), Bio-Fuels, Bio-Electricity and Batteries for electric transportation. We show that CCS significantly complements Bio-Electricity, while most of the other energy technology pairs are substitutes. From the probabilistic analysis of future energy scenarios we observe that portfolios with CCS tend to stochastically dominate those without CCS; portfolios with only renewables tend to be stochastically dominated by others; and that there are clear decreasing marginal returns to scale. We …

"Hydrogen serves as a promising new energy source having no pollution and abundant on earth. However the most difficult problem of applying hydrogen is to store it effectively and safely, which is smartly resolved by attempting to keep hydrogen in some metal hydrides to reach a high hydrogen density in a safe way. There are several promising metal hydrides, the thermodynamic and chemical properties of which are to be investigated in this dissertation.
Sodium alanate (NaAlH4) is one of the promising metal hydrides with high hydrogen storage capacity around 7.4 wt. % and relatively low decomposition temperature of …

Energy Optimizations For Smart Buildings And Smart Grids, Aditya K. Mishra
Doctoral Dissertations
Modern buildings are heavy power consumers. For instance, of the total electricity consumed in the US, 75% is consumed in the residential and commercial buildings. This consumption is not evenly distributed over time. Typical consumption profile exhibits several peaks and troughs. The peakiness, in turn, dictates the electric grid's generation, transmission and distribution costs, and also the associated carbon emissions. This thesis discusses challenges involved in achieving the sustainability goals in buildings and electric grids. It investigates building and grid energy footprint optimization techniques to achieve the following goals: 1) making buildings energy efficient, 2) cutting building's electricity bills, 3) …
