Energy Managment Of Photovoltaic Charging Station (Pv-Cs) For Green University Campus Transportation, Ayda Esfandyari, Brian Norton, Michael Conlon, Sarah Mccormack

Conference Papers

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) have been recognised as the ideal solution for lowering the CO2 emissions in the transport sector and helping to achieve a sustainable future. When BEV technology is leveraged with a solar energy source such as a Photovoltaic Charging Station (PV-CS), the CO2 saving potential is extended to both generation and consumption points. Due to the intermittent nature of our solar resource, once the PV-CS is combined with a storage unit, energy production is achieved without risking the disruption to power supply reliability and quality. Technological University Dublin (DIT) has recognised the viability of this …

Investigation Of Humidity And Temperature Response Of A Silica Gel Coated Microfiber Coupler, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell, Dejun Liu

Conference Papers

The humidity and temperature responses of a microfiber coupler (MFC) coated with silica gel are investigated. Two MFC structures with different waist diameters of 2.5 and 3.5 μm were fabricated by fusing and tapering two single-mode fibers using a microheater brushing technique. The influences of the coating thickness and tapered waist diameter on the sensing performance are analyzed. For the proposed sensor with a waist diameter of 2.5 μm and 8-layers thick coating, the change in the relative humidity (RH) results in an exponential blueshift with a maximum sensitivity of 1.6 nm/% RH in the range from 70 to 86% …

Agarose Coated Spherical Micro Resonator For Humidity Measurements, Arun Mallik, Vishnu Kavungal, Yuliya Semenova, Dejun Liu

Conference Papers

A new type of fiber optic relative humidity (RH) sensor based on an agarose coated silica microsphere resonator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the micro resonator are excited by evanescent coupling using a tapered fiber with ~3.3 μm waist diameter. A change in the relative humidity of the surrounding the resonator air induces changes in the refractive index (RI) and thickness of the Agarose coating layer. These changes in turn lead to a spectral shift of the WGM resonances, which can be related to the RH value after a suitable calibration. Studies of the repeatability, …

A Comparative Study Of Zn-Mn Electrodeposition From Deep Eutectic Solvents And Aqueous Electrolytes, Jelena Bajat, Mihael Bucko, David Culliton, Tony Betts Jan 2016

A Comparative Study Of Zn-Mn Electrodeposition From Deep Eutectic Solvents And Aqueous Electrolytes, Jelena Bajat, Mihael Bucko, David Culliton, Tony Betts

Conference Papers

The production of Zn-Mn coatings with high Mn and low oxygen content from additive free choline chloride/urea deep eutectic solvent (DES) is reported in this work. Alloy coatings containing high Mn contents (~30 at.% Mn) show the highest corrosion resistance amongst zinc alloys [1]. However, in order to obtain Mn-rich deposits on steel from a simple aqueous bath, a significant cathodic polarization or high deposition current density is necessary. Under such conditions, the Zn 2+ reduction reaction is under diffusion control, leading to the formation and growth of dendrites. In addition intensive hydrogen evolution significantly reduces the current efficiency, often …

The optical properties of the porous silica layer change when it is exposed to ammonia vapor, leading to a spectral shift of the WGM resonant wavelengths. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor has been tested by exposing it to different low level …

Enhancing Student Learning By Narrowing The Gap Between Feedback Giving And Feedback Receiving, Eileen Goold Dr Jan 2016

Enhancing Student Learning By Narrowing The Gap Between Feedback Giving And Feedback Receiving, Eileen Goold Dr

Conference Papers

Feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement. However the mere provision of feedback to students does not necessarily lead to improved learning. Feedback is ineffective if it does not close the gap between learning goals and students’ performance. Often students do not have clear goals and they do not know what learning activities will improve their learning performance. Consequently the opportunity to learn from the feedback is lost. Learning is a social process and while young people have increasingly strong social needs they struggle with academic language. This study investigates the influence of lecturers’ feedback …

Simultaneous Rotation And Distance Measurement Using Multiband Circularly Polarized Radio Link, Adam Narbudowicz Jan 2016

Simultaneous Rotation And Distance Measurement Using Multiband Circularly Polarized Radio Link, Adam Narbudowicz

Conference Papers

The paper proposes a method for simultaneous measurement of rotation and distance by using a multi-band circularly polarized radio links. The method is realized using a standard dual-band patch antenna, operating at 1.58 GHz and 2.27 GHz, with respective axial ratios of 1.7 dB and 1.0 dB. Both link distance and antenna rotation were varied from a reference position/orientation from -40 mm to +40 mm and from 0° to 360°, producing a total set of 125 samples. For a noiseless link the distance change and rotation were predicted with respective mean errors of 1.9 mm and 7.3°.
