Location tracking and monitoring applications have proliferated with the arrival of smart phones that are equipped with onboard global positioning system (GPS) chipsets. It is now possible to locate a smart phone user down to 10 metres of accuracy on average. Innovators have been quick to capitalise on this emerging market by introducing novel pedestrian tracking technologies which can denote the geographic path of a mobile user. Large cyclic stresses induced from heavy traffic can cause significant degradation of rail tracks, leading to poor track geometry and safety. Inclusion of resilient materials such as geosynthetics to reinforce the track substructure has been observed in the laboratory to be viable at reducing the impact of such adverse effects. Despite this, the ‘field’ performance of different geosynthetics to reinforce ballasted tracks has not been investigated in a systematic manner. An extensive field study was therefore undertaken on experimental track sections near Singleton, New South Wales. All over the world, ballasted railway tracks form one of the major transportation networks designed to provide heavy haul freight and passenger traffic. However, large cyclic loading from heavy axle trains operating at high speeds often causes excessive deformation and degradation of ballast, as well as unacceptable differential settlement of compressible foundation and, or pumping of the soft subgrade soils. The problem becomes more severe under high impact loads due to rail or wheel imperfections, causing accelerated ballast breakage. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring has been used to detect split formation during room temperature low blow Charpy impact testing of high strength thick strip steels. The AE signal analysis identified separate signals originating from hammer impact, plastic deformation (verified using Charpy impact testing on mild steel with no splits) and split initiation/growth. The presence of splits was confirmed by sectioning and fractography, and the splits were brittle in nature. A possible correlation between the AE signal features and fracture mode is presented.

Herein, mesoporous silicon (PSi) is configured as a single sensing device that has dual readouts; as a photonic crystal sensor in a Rugate filter configuration, and as a high surface area porous electrode. The as-prepared PSi is chemically modified to provide it with stability in aqueous media and to allow for the subsequent coupling of chemical species, such as via Cu(i)-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions between 1-alkynes and azides ("click" reactions). The utility of the bimodal capabilities of the PSi sensor for monitoring surface coupling procedures is demonstrated by the covalent coupling of a ferrocene derivative, as well as by demonstrating ligand-exchange …
