The University of Maine, the University of Southern Maine, several baccalaureate institutions in the state, along with other federal, state and local public, private, and non-profit institutions will collaborate to create the Forest Bioproducts Research Institute (FBRI) at the University of Maine. The vision of the FBRI is to advance understanding about the scientific underpinnings, system behavior, and policy implications for the production of forest-based bioproducts that meet societal needs for materials, chemicals, and fuels in an economically and ecologically sustainable manner.
The research plans Integrate three themes. They are (1) forest sustainability modeling of life cycle assessment, (2) integrated …
Sensors: A Novel Lateral Field Excited Acoustic Wave Sensor For Chemical And Biological Agents, John F. Vetelino, David Frankel, Carl Tripp, Paul J. Millard
Sensors: A Novel Lateral Field Excited Acoustic Wave Sensor For Chemical And Biological Agents, John F. Vetelino, David Frankel, Carl Tripp, Paul J. Millard
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Sensors for the sensitive and selective detection of chemical agents and a biological agent are being developed. The sensor structure consists of a piezoelectric platform that is coated with a film that selectively sorbs a chemical or biological agent of interest. The sensitivity of the sensor is embodied in the sensor platform, which consists of a quartz crystal that is excited by a lateral electric field. The exciting electrodes are placed opposite to the sensing surface, and the sensing film is attached directly to the sensor platform. This arrangement is in contrast to the standard quartz microbalance (QCM), where the …

Ret Site: Sensors!, John F. Vetelino, Constance Holden
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
This award provides funding for a 3 year standard award to support a Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Site program at the University of Maine entitled, "RET Site: Sensors!," under the direction of Dr. John F. Vetelino. This site will provide 10 high school teachers per year from rural Maine with 8-week summer research experiences involving intensive, team-based sensor research projects with an intellectual focus on sensor theory, design fabrication, testing, and/or applications.
Career: The Role Of Microorganisms In Arsenic Contamination Of Groundwater, Jean D. Macrae
Career: The Role Of Microorganisms In Arsenic Contamination Of Groundwater, Jean D. Macrae
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Arsenic is the only contaminant for which exposure through drinking water has been proven to cause cancer in humans. The US Environmental Protection Agency has concluded that the present drinking water limit of 50 ug/L arsenic is not sufficiently protective and proposes a new limit of 10 ug/L. In most cases, the arsenic originates in the geologic materials of the aquifer. While correlations with bedrock types have been made, the factors that affect arsenic concentrations and speciation in drinking water are poorly understood. As(III), the reduced inorganic form, is more mobile and more toxic than As(V), thus speciation affects both …
Career: Acoustic Wave Filters For High Frequency Wireless Communication Applications, Mauricio Pereira Da Cunha
Career: Acoustic Wave Filters For High Frequency Wireless Communication Applications, Mauricio Pereira Da Cunha
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
Expanding commercial and military applications crowd the wireless communications frequency band, creating a critical need to expand the band to higher frequencies. The application of newly discovered high velocity pseudo surface acoustic waves (HVPSAWs), has the potential of satisfying the high frequency requirements of the next generation of wireless communications.
This CAREER proposal involves an integrated research and education plan for high radio frequency (RF) microwave acoustic devices. The research objective is to identify piezoelectric materials and specific orientations in which HVPSAWs exist, and to design, fabricate, and test prototype HVPSAW filters. Specific research tasks are: (i) search for piezoelectric …
Localization Using Extended Kalman Filters In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ali Shareef, Yifeng Zhu
Localization Using Extended Kalman Filters In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ali Shareef, Yifeng Zhu
Graduate Student Scholarly and Creative Submissions
Introduction: Localization arises repeatedly in many location-aware applications such as navigation, autonomous robotic movement, and asset tracking. Analytical localization methods include triangulation and trilateration. Triangulation uses angles, distances, and trigonometric relationships to locate an object. Trilateration, on the other hand, uses only distance measurements to identify the position of the target.
Acquisition Of A Sub-Micron Resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography System, Eric N. Landis, Andre Khalil
Acquisition Of A Sub-Micron Resolution X-Ray Computed Tomography System, Eric N. Landis, Andre Khalil
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
The award will be used to purchase a laboratory scale x-ray computed tomography system capable of sub-micron spatial resolution. The system is capable of imaging the internal structure of a wide range of materials. This capability will initially be exploited to answer questions regarding the uptake of trace metals in the environment, bone mineral density, defects in micromachines, membrane and filter processes, artery roughness and fluid flow, and microstructure-property relationships for a variety of heterogeneous and functionally graded materials. All these fields will be aided by the parallel adaptation and implementation of sophisticated 3D image analysis routines to maximize the …

Finance Faculty Scholarship
The purpose of this paper is to develop an algorithm to harvest user specified information on finance portals and compile it into machine‐readable datasets for quantitative analysis. The Visual Basic macro language in Microsoft Excel is applied to develop code that is not constrained by the single‐query function of Excel. The core of the algorithm is built around the splitting of the URL connector line and the placement of a continuously updating variable into which are looped as many tickers as there are in the input list. The output is then written to non‐overlapping cells. Numerical information placed on major …
