Computed Tomography To Assess Pulmonary Injury Associated With Concurrent Chemo-Radiotherapy For Inoperable Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Galit Aviram, Edward Yu, Patricia Tai, Michael Lefcoe

Edward Yu

OBJECTIVE: To characterize serial computed tomography (CT) findings of pulmonary injury after a uniform regimen of concurrent chemo-radiotherapy in inoperable non-small cell lung cancer, and to compare the radiation-induced lung toxicity with other concurrent chemo-radiation regimens. METHODS: Twenty-four patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer received 2 induction cycles of cisplatin and vinblastine, followed by 2 further cycles of cisplatin and vinblastine, concurrent with 60 Gy radiation at 2 Gy per fraction. Radiation-induced lung injury in the acute and chronic phases was assessed by serial CT scans and compared with preradiation baseline scans. Acute radiation pneumonitis was evaluated using the …

Sensor And Method Of Use, Us Patent # 6,318,174, Paul L. Bergstorm

Paul Bergstrom

A sensor has an electrode (120) that is movable along three mutually perpendicular axes (10, 11, 12). The sensor also has stationary over-travel limiting structures that restrict the movement of the electrode (120) along the three axes (10, 11, 12).

Estimation Of Error In Large Area Underwater Photomosaics Using Vehicle Navigation Data, C. Roman, H. Singh Oct 2001

Estimation Of Error In Large Area Underwater Photomosaics Using Vehicle Navigation Data, C. Roman, H. Singh

Christopher N. Roman

Creating geometrically accurate photomosaics of underwater sites using images collected from an AUV or ROV is a difficult task due to dimensional errors which grow as a function of 3D image distortion and the mosaicking process. Although photomosiacs are accurate locally their utility for accurately representing a large survey area is jeopardized by this error growth. Evaluating the error in a mosaic is the first step in creating globally accurate photomosaics of an unstructured environment with bounded error. Using vehicle navigation data and sensor offsets it is possible to estimate the error present in large area photomosaics independent of the …

Hitos En La Historia De La Metalurgia, Fathi Habashi Jun 2001

Hitos En La Historia De La Metalurgia, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Up to the Middle Ages, seven metals were only known and used by man. These were gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, tin, and mercury. During the Middle Ages the metalloids arsenic, antimony, and bismuth were isolated as well as zinc that was imported from the East. In the Eighteenth century mineral specimens were continuously supplied and analyzed which resulted in the discovery of about a dozen new metals. With the discovery of electric current at the beginning of the nineteenth century the alkali metals were isolated and these were responsible for the isolation of new metals that were not possible …

Identification Of Shapes Using A Nonlinear Dynamic System, Shaheen Hoque, Sanza Kazadi, Angel Li, Will Chen, Elvio Sadun Jun 2001

Identification Of Shapes Using A Nonlinear Dynamic System, Shaheen Hoque, Sanza Kazadi, Angel Li, Will Chen, Elvio Sadun

Sanza Kazadi

We describe a nonlinear system capable of use as a recognition system. This system is composed of a set of coupled oscillators, connected by linear springs. Images are overlaid on the system by altering the masses and spring constants of the oscillators, thereby modifying the detailed behavior of the system. Signatures extracted from the system using FFT of the individual oscillator positions show coherance, relative continuity, and translational and rotational invariance. These properties are discussed in the context of the eventual use of this system as a general identification system.

Alterations In P53 And E2f-1 Function Common To Immortalized Chicken Embryo Fibroblasts, Sakthikumar Ambady, Hyunggee Kim, Seungkwon You, In-Jeong Kim, Linda Foster, James Farris, F Able Ponce Leon, Douglas Foster May 2001

Alterations In P53 And E2f-1 Function Common To Immortalized Chicken Embryo Fibroblasts, Sakthikumar Ambady, Hyunggee Kim, Seungkwon You, In-Jeong Kim, Linda Foster, James Farris, F Able Ponce Leon, Douglas Foster

Sakthikumar Ambady

A number of non-virally and non-chemically immortalized chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cells have been established recently in continuous cell culture. All immortal CEF cells tested showed common genetic alterations in the expression patterns of p53 and E2F-1 mRNA and protein which were down- and up-regulated, respectively. The biological effects of differentially regulated p53 and E2F-1 were determined by reporter gene transcriptional activity assays, DNA binding assays, and Northern blot analysis of the expression patterns of down-stream genes. In addition, expression of most of the cyclin genes was up-regulated in immortal CEF cells, which may be associated with the rapid cell …

Tri-Brachial Flames Around Two Interactive Droplets In Flows With Fuel Vapor, Wei-Hsin Chen Apr 2001

Tri-Brachial Flames Around Two Interactive Droplets In Flows With Fuel Vapor, Wei-Hsin Chen

Wei-Hsin Chen

The flame structures around two equal-sized and interactive fuel droplets immersed in high-temperature convective flows are examined. When the flame is sustained between the two droplets while the flow is pure air, an anchor-shape flame structure, namely the tri-brachial flame, is clearly observed. When far-field temperature or ambient equivalence ratio is increased, the flame propagates upstream and the fuel-lean premixed flame withers. However, ifthe ambient equivalence ratio is high to some extent such as 0.3, two wings ofthe flame, viz. the fuel-lean and the fuel-rich premixed flames, extend outward from the stoichiometric point. Once the flame encircles the leading droplet, …

History Of Rare Earths On Postage Stamps, Fathi Habashi Mar 2001

History Of Rare Earths On Postage Stamps, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Postage stamps are important means of communication and many countries have recorded important events, honored worthy individuals, and described interesting facts through this medium. Many historical facts, sometimes obscure, can be found on stamps; some of these may not be easily located in a history or a science book. Stamps have artistic value, they are created by artists. Mining and Metallurgy on Postage Stamps is intended to give a historical background to mining and metallurgy by presenting about 900 enlarged reproductions of colored stamps from different countries. Explanations are given in simple language to bring these topics to young people, …

Responsible Engineering: The Importance Of Character And Imagination, Michael Pritchard Dec 2000

Responsible Engineering: The Importance Of Character And Imagination, Michael Pritchard

Michael Pritchard

Engineering Ethics literature tends to emphasize wrongdoing, its avoidance, or its prevention. It also tends to focus on identifiable events, especially those that involve unfortunate, sometimes disastrous consequences. This paper shifts attention to the positive in engineering practice; and, as a result, the need for addressing questions of character and imagination becomes apparent.

Thermodynamic Analysis Of Thermomechanical Coupling In Tangential Couette Flow Of Temperature Dependent Materials, Yasar Demirel Dec 2000

Thermodynamic Analysis Of Thermomechanical Coupling In Tangential Couette Flow Of Temperature Dependent Materials, Yasar Demirel

YASAR DEMIREL

Thermodynamic analysis of the thermomechanical coupling in a tangential Couette flow is presented for the Nahme number Na range of 0.5 < Na < 2.5. In the analysis, the temperature and velocity gradients, obtained from the series solutions in the Brinkman number Br, have been used for Newtonian fluids whose viscosity and thermal conductivity are expressed as linear functions of temperature. The entropy generation and the irreversibility distributions due to the thermomechanical coupling are evaluated and displayed graphically across the gap with asymmetric wall temperatures for the Couette flow of ethylene glycol.

Preface, David D. Nolte Dec 2000

Preface, David D. Nolte

David D Nolte

Light is the quintessential messenger. It travels faster than anything. It weighs nothing, and
costs almost as little to make. A million rays of light carrying a thousand colors can travel along with each
other or through each other without interacting, carrying data and commands between millions of locations.
This is the parallelism of light, and it represents massive communication and computational power. With
it, machines of light can do a million things at once.

Construction And Reactivity Mapping Of A Platinum Catalyst Gradient Using The Scanning Electrochemical Microscope, Shrisudersan Jayaraman, Andrew C. Hillier Dec 2000

Construction And Reactivity Mapping Of A Platinum Catalyst Gradient Using The Scanning Electrochemical Microscope, Shrisudersan Jayaraman, Andrew C. Hillier

Andrew C. Hillier

Wedescribe a method for the characterization of electro-oxidation catalysts that involves the fabrication and reactivity mapping of samples possessing a catalyst gradient. The objective of this work is to demonstrate a method for catalyst preparation and screening that directly measures the activity of spatially localized catalyst samples toward electro-oxidation reactions relevant to the fuel cell anode in an effort to discover and characterize new catalyst formulations. In this report, a well-defined gradient in the surface coverage of platinum is created on an electronically conductive but catalytically inactive indium-tin-oxide (ITO) substrate by the application of a nonuniform electric field during platinum …
