The power line implementation of the consumer electronic bus (PL CEBUS) is a promising and inexpensive approach for home automation. Since the intro¬duction of the PL CEBUS standards, there has been increasing efforts on evaluating its performance. However, all the works have been performed for unacknowledged networks. This thesis presents the first successful evaluation of the PL CEBUS with acknowledment. Three different cases, namely, 600, 300 and 100 bits packet sizes, have been considered. The evaluation included the simulation of performance parameters such as message and packet delays, message throughput, and channel throughput. The advances in fiber optics technology provide large bandwidth and enable the support of a wide variety of services. New network architectures have been proposed, such as Metaring and Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB), that try to take advantage of the new capabilities. Because of the very small packet transmission time relative to the feedback time a challenging issue in high speed networks is the efficient and fair share of the channel bandwidth among the competing users. The objectives of this dissertation are to investigate the performance of the Consumer Electronics Bus (CEBus) and to develop a theoretical formulation of the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Contention Detection and Contention Resolution (CSMA/CDCR) with three priority classes protocol utilized by the CEBus

A new priority channel assigned multiple access with embedded priority resolution (PAMA/PR) theoretical model is formulated. It incorporates the main features of the CEBus with three priority classes. The analytical results for throughput and delay obtained by this formulation were compared to simulation experiments.
