In this dissertation, a novel approach to Internet Protocol (IP) Traceback - Deterministic Packet Marking (DPM) is presented. The proposed approach is scalable, simple to implement, and introduces no bandwidth and practically no processing overhead on the network equipment. It is capable of tracing thousands of simultaneous attackers during a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. Given sufficient deployment on the Internet, DPM is capable of tracing back to the slaves for DDoS attacks which involve reflectors. Most of the processing is done at the victim. Optimum combining (OC) is a well-known coherent detection technique used to combat fading and suppress cochannel interference. In this dissertation, expressions are developed to evaluate the error probability of OC for systems with multiple interferers and multiple receiving branches. Three approaches are taken to derive the expressions. The first one starts from the decision metrics of OC. It facilitates obtaining closed-form expressions for binary phase-shift keying modulation. Thermochemical properties for reactants, intermediates, products and transition states important in the radicals of acetaldehyde + O2 and allyl radical + O2 reaction systems are analyzed with density functional and ab initic calculations, to evaluate the reaction paths and kinetics in oxidation and pyrolysis. Ketene is one important product resulting from acetaldehyde oxidation; thus thermochemistry plus isomerization and conversion reactions of ketene are also analyzed. This dissertation presents a theoretical investigation of a practical method to determine quantitatively the locations and loci of complex transmission zeros (TZ's) of positively and negatively cross-coupled RF or microwave bandpass filter networks.

Bandpass filters can be effectively designed by adjusting the locations of TZ's in the complex s-domain. To locate TZ's, this practical method uses chain matrices for subsystems (discrete parts of the network) of the filter network, and can be extended to other types of filters with cross-coupled sections.

The next generations of Si microelectronic devices will require ultra shallow p-type junctions formed by implantation of B ions with energies below 1 keV, at which available beam currents are severely limited by space charge effects. A new full wave method for scattering of plane waves from a rough dielectric surface is developed. This new theory begins by postulating a zero-order field solution which does not satisfy Maxwell's source-free field equations. The zero-order field, however, is made to satisfy Maxwell's source equations. This is done by introducing a fictitious volume current distribution. Since the original problem does not possess a volume current distribution, its introduction represents a measure of the error in the postulated zero-order solution. Ramp metering was proven to be a viable form of freeway traffic control strategy, which could eliminate, or at least reduce, freeway congestion. In this study, the development of ramp metering control strategies, models, and constraints (e.g., meter locations, ramp storage capacities, lower and upper bounds of ramp metering rates) are discussed in detail. The pre-timed and demand/capacity metering control strategies were first evaluated, while the potential metered ramps were determined. The present work describes results of experimental and theoretical studies of the behavior of dilute suspensions subject to high gradient AC electric fields. When a spatially non-uniform electric field is applied to a suspension, in which the particles and the suspending fluid have different dielectric permittivities andlor conductivities, the particles migrate towards the regions of high or low electric field strengths depending on the sign of their polarization. This phenomenon, referred to as dielectrophoresis, has found numerous applications for the control and manipulation of the particle motions.

Two major focus research areas related to the design of the next generation multihop wireless networks are network lifetime extension and interference suppression. In this dissertation, these two issues are addressed.

In the area of interference suppression, a new family of projection multiuser detectors, based on a generalized, two-stage design is proposed. Projection multiuser detectors provide efficient protection against undesired interference of unknown power, while preserving simple design, with closed-form solution for error probabilities. This work investigates the structural and chemorheological modification of polyethylene terephthalate in the melt phase with low molecular weight multifunctional glycidyl compounds as reactive additives. Polyethylene terephthalate undergoes chain extension and/or branching reactions with the additives that result in modified rheological properties suitable for certain polymer processing operations such as extrusion blow molding or extrusion foaming to low densities.
