“The analysis of contaminants of emerging concern is critical to protecting environmental health. In the presented dissertation, two groups of contaminants of emerging concern were assessed using mass spectrometry methods: nanoparticles and algal and cyanotoxins.
Analysis of metal oxide nanoparticles in environmental matrices has been a challenging issue, as most traditional methods require complicated sample preparation methods or that can alter or destroy the nanoparticles in the system. "Homogeneous nucleation during solidification in Al (fcc), Fe (bcc) and Mg (hcp) is studied by million-atom molecular dynamics (MD) utilizing the second nearest neighbor modified embedded atom method (2NN-MEAM) potentials. Spontaneous homogenous nucleation from the melt was produced without any influence of pressure, free surface effects and impurities. We also study the effect on the simulation size on homogenous nucleation and the heterogeneity in homogenous nucleation. The heterogeneity in homogenous nucleation originates from the twins, grain boundaries and short range order in the liquid during the initial stages of solidification.

“The objective of this document is to design high-performance fiber-reinforced self-consolidating concrete (FR-SCC) for infrastructure repair and fiber-reinforced super-workable concrete (FR-SWC) for bridge construction. The investigated fibers included propylene synthetic fibers, hooked steel fibers, double and triple hooked steel fibers, hybrid crimped steel fiber and polypropylene multifilament fibers, and micro-macro steel fibers. "Decoupling capacitors are used to suppress high-frequency noise in power distribution networks. The inductance associated with a mounted decoupling capacitor can vary by 26% depending on characteristics of the printed circuit board. Here, simple and accurate inductance models of 2- and 8-terminal capacitors including connections to the power and return plane are developed. Circuit models of the capacitors and layout are created using the partial equivalent element circuit method which provide options for circuit-level simulations as well as analytic estimation of inductance. ”This dissertation presents a new method for distributively sensing dynamic environments utilizing integral action based system theoretic distributed information fusion methods. Change detection involves many technical steps beyond the initial data acquisition: data structuring, registration, and elimination of data artifacts such as parallax errors, near-field obstructions, and vegetation. "This study is to explore and develop chemically-bonded enamel coating (200-300 um) on steel pipes, when subjected to soil and thermal environments, in order to improve the corrosion protection and safety of hazardous liquid and natural gas pipelines while reducing pressure loss. Out of five types of enamels and their various mixtures, Tomatec slurry and GP2118 powder were selected for steel pipeline applications. "Non-point source pollution is the leading cause of impairment in surface water in the Midwest. In this research, we seek to predict which watersheds are most vulnerable to point source pollution without field sampling using publically available GIS databases. Watersheds with higher vulnerability ratings can then be targeted for water quality monitoring, and funds used to improve watershed health can be distributed with greater efficacy. To better understand and target watershed vulnerability, we used three different approaches. "Blasting activities using standard industry explosives is an essential component of underground hard rock mining operations. Blasting operations result in the release of noxious gases, presenting both safety and productivity threats. Overestimation of post-blast re-entry time results in production losses, while underestimation leads to injuries and fatalities. Research shows that most underground mines simply standardize post-blast re-entry times based on experiences and observations. A comprehensive understanding of the microstructural evolution of Zirconium Carbide (ZrC2) ceramics under irradiation conditions is required for their successful implementation in advanced Gen-IV gas-cooled nuclear reactors. The research presented in this dissertation focusses on elucidating the ion and electron irradiation response of ZrC2 ceramics. In the first part of the research, the microstructural evolution was characterized for ZrC2 ceramics irradiated with 10 MeV Au3+ ions up to doses of 30 displacement per atom (dpa) at 800 ºC. "Haul truck capacities have increased due to their economies of scale in large-scale surface mine production systems. Ultra-large trucks impose high dynamic loads on haul roads. The dynamic loads are exacerbated by road surface roughness and truck over-loading. The dynamic forces also subject trucks to high torsional stresses, which affect truck health. Current haul road response models are 2D and use static truckloads for low capacity trucks. Existing 3D models consider the road as a two-layer system.
