Development Of Experimental And Numerical Methods For Investigations Of High-Octane Fuels In Heavy-Duty Applications, Jared James Zeman Jul 2021

Development Of Experimental And Numerical Methods For Investigations Of High-Octane Fuels In Heavy-Duty Applications, Jared James Zeman

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Increasingly stringent emissions regulations has threatened the existence of the internal combustion (IC) engine. In some transportation sectors, non-IC engine powertrains have the potential to be a logical solution. However, in the heavy-duty sector, the IC engine is predicted to remain the dominant propulsion method for the foreseeable future. With ever-increasing demand for heavy-duty power generation platforms, the primary focus for the development of the future heavy-duty IC engine needs to be on increasing engine efficiency and the adoption of lowlife-cycle carbon, clean burning fuels, e.g. methanol. The fuel ignition properties of these fuels, e.g. high octane, cause difficulties when …

Lumped Parameter Modeling And Parameter Investigation Of An Electrohydraulic Crimping Hand Tool, Eric Norquist Apr 2019

Lumped Parameter Modeling And Parameter Investigation Of An Electrohydraulic Crimping Hand Tool, Eric Norquist

Master's Theses (2009 -)

A lumped parameter model of a hand-held electrohydraulic tool was developed. The tool modeled was a Milwaukee Tool M18 12 Ton Crimper. First principle approaches were used to develop state-space models for each of the subsystems in the tool. The included subsystems were the tool motor and gear train, pump, return valve, and cylinder. The subsystem models were combined into a comprehensive eleventh-order nonlinear dynamic tool model. The tool model has two inputs and three outputs. The model inputs were the motor voltage and opening the return valve. The outputs were the motor current, application time, and retraction time. Each …

Flight Control And Hardware Design Of Multi-Rotor Systems, Nathan M. Zimmerman Jul 2016

Flight Control And Hardware Design Of Multi-Rotor Systems, Nathan M. Zimmerman

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis overviews crucial concepts involved in achieving quadcopter flight such as orientation estimation and control system implementation. This thesis also presents researchers with comprehensive hardware and software specifications for a quadcopter system. The primary application for this system would be for research with regards to the implementation of advance control techniques as well as data acquisition. Key constructs of this system include hardware software specifications for a flight controller, the radio system, and the sensorless brushless motor controllers. Firstly, the thesis starts by developing a reference frame and a mathematical model for the quadcotper system. Next, flight orientation estimation …

Identification And Retraining Of Sensorimotor Deficits To Reduce Intention Tremor In Multiple Sclerosis, Megan Heenan Apr 2015

Identification And Retraining Of Sensorimotor Deficits To Reduce Intention Tremor In Multiple Sclerosis, Megan Heenan

Dissertations (1934 -)

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects approximately 1 in 1000 Americans and is a significant cause of disability in the United States. One significant contributor to disability in MS is intention tremor, which manifests as an oscillation about the endpoint of a goal-directed movement. A major challenge of treating intention tremor is that the underlying causes of tremor in MS are unknown. In this study, we describe a systems-level computational model and an experimental technique that parameterizes subject-specific deficits in sensory feedback control during goal-directed movements. We used this approach to characterize sensorimotor control and examine how sensory and motor processes are …

A One-Dimensional Model Of A Closed-Loop Refrigeration Test Block For Centrifugal Compressors, Paul D. Gessler Apr 2014

A One-Dimensional Model Of A Closed-Loop Refrigeration Test Block For Centrifugal Compressors, Paul D. Gessler

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The increasingly competitive building equipment and control industry pushes manufacturers to continually improve the performance and efficiency of their products to develop and maintain a competitive edge. Compressor development is an expensive endeavor, but the cost and time required for testing can be minimized by developing a model of the compressor test block to predict its behavior with a given prototype compressor at specified operating conditions. This thesis presents a thermodynamic model of a hot gas bypass test block used to evaluate centrifugal compressor performance at a compressor development facility. The test block uses cooling towers to reject the heat …

Characterization Of Two-Dimensional Oculomotor Control During Goal-Directed Eye Movements In Humans, Vincent Dang Oct 2013

Characterization Of Two-Dimensional Oculomotor Control During Goal-Directed Eye Movements In Humans, Vincent Dang

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Oculomotor control is a subset of sensorimotor control that allows humans to make extremely accurate eye movements for ADL. Impairments to oculomotor control can increase the impact of sensorimotor control deficits, especially in neurodegenerative diseases such as MS. Here, a two-dimensional computational control system of saccades and smooth-pursuit eye movements was compiled from literature to systematically characterize oculomotor control in eight visually-healthy humans as a precursor to studying the relationship between oculomotor and sensorimotor control in patient populations. Subjects visually tracked a single dot on a 41 x 30.5 cm monitor in a dark room while eye positions were recorded …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Redox Processes In Intact Rat Lungs And Endothelial Cells And The Effect Of Hyperoxia, Zhuohui Gan Oct 2011

Quantitative Evaluation Of Redox Processes In Intact Rat Lungs And Endothelial Cells And The Effect Of Hyperoxia, Zhuohui Gan

Dissertations (1934 -)

A common initial treatment of hypoxemia in patients with lung failure secondary to acute lung injury (e.g., adult respiratory distress syndrome) is oxygen (O2) therapy (hyperoxia). However, prolonged O2 therapy causes lung O2 toxicity, which can further impair lung functions. The rat model of lung O2 toxicity replicates key features of human lung O2 toxicity. In addition, rats develop tolerance or susceptibility to 100% O2 by pre-exposing them to 85% O2 (hyper-85) or 60% O2 (hyper-60) for 7 days, respectively. Therefore, the long-term objectives of this study are to elucidate mechanisms …

Observer Incorporated Neoclassical Controller Design: A Discrete Perspective, Winston Alexander Baker Aug 2010

Observer Incorporated Neoclassical Controller Design: A Discrete Perspective, Winston Alexander Baker

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Control theory has generally been divided into two categories, modern control and classical control. Modern control uses state feedback to alter the pole locations of a given system. Classical control uses pre-compensation to alter the zeroes of the system and uses output feedback to adjust the poles to bring stability to the system. The drawback is that the application of classical control techniques can be a lengthy, complicated and iterative design process and in the end, classical control techniques still do not give information about the state of the system. Neoclassical control combines classical control techniques with the state feedback …

A Mixed-Dimensionality Modeling Approach For Interaction Of Heterogeneous Steam Reforming Reactions And Heat Transfer, Jeroen Valensa Jan 2009

A Mixed-Dimensionality Modeling Approach For Interaction Of Heterogeneous Steam Reforming Reactions And Heat Transfer, Jeroen Valensa

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Hydrogen is most often produced on an industrial scale by catalytic steam methane reforming, an equilibrium-limited, highly endothermic process requiring the substantial addition of heat at elevated temperatures. The extent of reaction, or conversion efficiency, of this process is known to be heat transfer limited. Scaling the industrial process equipment down to the size required for small, compact fuel cell systems has encountered difficulties due to increased heat losses at smaller scales. One promising approach to effectively scale down the reforming process is to coat the catalyst directly onto the heat exchange surfaces of an integrated reactor/heat exchanger. In this …
