Secure Power Grid Infrastructure Simulation And Test-Bed System Creation, Nelson Cristaldo Jul 2007

Secure Power Grid Infrastructure Simulation And Test-Bed System Creation, Nelson Cristaldo

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the design and construction of the test-bed system as well as its implementation to simulate the distributed control scheme. Some important elements of the system incorporate flexible power system network hardware and a data acquisition (DAQ) system to evaluate the issues that could trigger cascaded failures.

The objective of this research was to create an integrated simulation environment that represents the power system devices, the control, the protection, and the communication subsystems in the same simulation environment. We have utilized this simulator to conduct system studies and evaluate the interaction between power system components under steady-state and …

Mitigation Of Roof Uplift Through Vortex Suppresion Techniques, Collette Marguerite Blessing Jul 2007

Mitigation Of Roof Uplift Through Vortex Suppresion Techniques, Collette Marguerite Blessing

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of modified roof edge geometry in the reduction of high suction pressures at roof corner and edge regions through full-scale testing approach. Utilizing the RenaissanceRe 6-fan Wall of Wind (WOW) testing apparatus, a test structure instrumented with pressure transducers was equipped with six different modified roof edge geometries and subjected to hurricane force winds. A series of seven tests, six for the different roof geometries and one to determine the standard pressure distribution without any modifications, were conducted and pressure data from all seven tests were compared. Results indicated that …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Three-Dimensional Magnetic Media, David Doria Jun 2007

Fabrication And Characterization Of Three-Dimensional Magnetic Media, David Doria

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Conventional longitudinal magnetic recording has scarcely progressed the last couple of years, leaving the data storage industry frantically searching for alternative ways to store information and increase memory areal density. The research was directed towards the development of three-dimensional magnetic memory for recording purposes. Three-dimensional memory, an alternative to longitudinal recording, would achieve well over the current areal density of the latter. Another focus of the research was directed towards development of the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnometer, an important tool used to measure magnetic behavior through hysteresis curves.

The fabrication of three-dimensional media was prepared with the aid of …

A Method For Enhancing Digital Information Displayed To Computer Users With Visual Refractive Errors Via Spatial And Spectral Processing, Miguel Alonso Jr. May 2007

A Method For Enhancing Digital Information Displayed To Computer Users With Visual Refractive Errors Via Spatial And Spectral Processing, Miguel Alonso Jr.

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research pursued the conceptualization, implementation, and verification of a system that enhances digital information displayed on an LCD panel to users with visual refractive errors. The target user groups for this system are individuals who have moderate to severe visual aberrations for which conventional means of compensation, such as glasses or contact lenses, does not improve their vision.

This research is based on a priori knowledge of the user's visual aberration, as measured by a wavefront analyzer. With this information it is possible to generate images that, when displayed to this user, will counteract his/her visual aberration. The method …

Role Of Carbon Nanotube Dispersion In Fracture Toughening Of Plasma Sprayed Aluminum Oxide - Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposite Coating, Kantesh Balani May 2007

Role Of Carbon Nanotube Dispersion In Fracture Toughening Of Plasma Sprayed Aluminum Oxide - Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposite Coating, Kantesh Balani

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aluminum oxide (A1203, or alumina) is a conventional ceramic known for applications such as wear resistant coatings, thermal liners, heaters, crucibles, dielectric systems, etc. However applications of A1203 are limited owing to its inherent brittleness. Due to its excellent mechanical properties and bending strength, carbon nanotubes (CNT) is an ideal reinforcement for A1203 matrix to improve its fracture toughness.

The role of CNT dispersion in the fracture toughening of the plasma sprayed A1203-CNT nanocomposite coating is discussed in the current work. Pretreatment of powder feedstock is …

A Grid Computing Network Platform For Enhanced Data Management And Visualization, Javier Delgado Mar 2007

A Grid Computing Network Platform For Enhanced Data Management And Visualization, Javier Delgado

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a novel approach towards providing a collaboration environment by using Grid Computing. The implementation includes the deployment of a cluster attached to a mural display for high performance computing and visualization and a Grid-infrastructure for sharing storage space across a wide area network and easing the remote use of the computing resources. A medical data processing application is implemented on the platform. The outcome is enhanced use of remote storage facilities and quick return time for computationally-intensive problems.

The central issue of this thesis work is thus one that focuses on the development of a secure distributed …

A Robotic Ankle-Foot Orthosis With Integrated Electromyography Biofeedback Control For Improving Gait Symmetry In Stroke Rehabilitation, Szu-Min Chang Mar 2007

A Robotic Ankle-Foot Orthosis With Integrated Electromyography Biofeedback Control For Improving Gait Symmetry In Stroke Rehabilitation, Szu-Min Chang

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pathology of stroke attacks the central nervous system commonly resulting in the loss of voluntary neuromuscular control which negatively affects the walking capability of many survivors. New rehabilitation techniques utilizing biofeedback, robotic assisted movements, and gait specific exercises have been shown individually to increase the neurological recovery as compared to traditional methods of physical rehabilitation. The Biofeedback Assisted Robotic Ankle-foot orthosis (B.A.R.A.) is a prototype that combines all three characteristic treatments into a single portable device focused on improving voluntary dorsiflexion capability and gait patterns of the ankle-foot complex. The initial pilot study utilized a single healthy individual to …

Physical Dynamic Simulation Of Shipboard Power System Components In A Distributed Computational Environment, Nagy Youssef Abed Mar 2007

Physical Dynamic Simulation Of Shipboard Power System Components In A Distributed Computational Environment, Nagy Youssef Abed

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Shipboard power systems have different characteristics than the utility power systems. In the Shipboard power system it is crucial that the systems and equipment work at their peak performance levels.

One of the most demanding aspects for simulations of the Shipboard Power Systems is to connect the device under test to a real-time simulated dynamic equivalent and in an environment with actual hardware in the Loop (HIL). The real time simulations can be achieved by using multi-distributed modeling concept, in which the global system model is distributed over several processors through a communication link. The advantage of this approach is …
