The smartphone-controlled RC (remote-controlled) car is an inexpensive remote-controlled car designed to be fast and portable. Instead of manufacturing, packaging, and shipping a separate controller, the remote control is implemented in a phone application, which saves time and money in both the design process and the manufacturing process. Utilizing the user’s smartphone is more cost-effective since mobile devices are a common recurrence, and packaging fewer devices results in overall better portability of the product.

Many people who use wheelchairs are very active. They have errands to run and lives to live just like everybody else. Off-road vehicle bucket seats are currently restricted to a single position relative to the floor of the vehicle. Drivers and riders desire the ability to adjust their seat position to increase comfort and allow for a greater size range of riders to fit safely within the cabin or roll cage. This thesis is concerned with electronic stability of an all-wheel drive electric vehicle with independent motors mounted in each wheel. The additional controllability and speed permitted using independent motors can be exploited to improve the handling and stability of electric vehicles. In this thesis, these improvements arise from employing a direct yaw moment control (DYC) system that seeks to adapt the understeer gradient of the vehicle and achieve neutral steer by employing a supervisory controller and simultaneously tracking an ideal yaw rate and ideal sideslip angle. Autonomous vehicles have a lot of potential in improving people’s everyday lives. They could reduce congestion, reduce collisions, enhance mobility, and more. But with these benefits come security and privacy risks. In order to research and test some of these risks, we are building a set of scale autonomous cars that can model autonomous and collaborative behaviors. One such behaviour would be platooning, where a group of vehicles can travel closely together at high speeds by following a lead car. We are doing this with various sensors and control algorithms to allow for future modularity.
