Experimental Study On The Tribo-Chemical Smoothening Process Between Self-Mated Silicon Carbide In A Water-Lubricated Surface-Contact Reciprocating Test, Le Jin, Herbert Scheerer, Georg Andersohn, Matthias Oechsner, Dieter Hellmann

Friction

Silicon carbide (SiC) can be tribo-chemically smoothened during a self-mated sliding procedure in the aqueous environment. As well reported in the point-contact tests, this smoothening process works well due to the abundant water as oxidant. After this smoothening process, the tribo-surface is well polished, a closely mated tribo-gap naturally forms, and an ultra-low friction state is built. However, water in the tribo-gap could be insufficient in industrial applications, e.g., the seal gap in mechanical seals. In this study, the tribo-chemical smoothening behavior in such environment was researched. A surface-contact reciprocating test was used to simulate the aqueous environment where water …

Design Of Surface Texture For The Enhancement Of Tribological Performance, Cong Shen Jan 2016

Design Of Surface Texture For The Enhancement Of Tribological Performance, Cong Shen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Surface texturing is a method of surface modification that fabricates micro patterns on the contacting surfaces to improve the tribological performance in sliding, lubricated system. It is found that the geometric design of textures has a significant influence on the performance of textured surfaces. Some important geometric parameters, such as the area ratio and the depth-over-diameter ratio, have been identified for textures in the form of circular dimples. The current study aims to improve the friction reduction effect of surface texturing by using textures with novel designs. Some new factors considered in the design of textures are: internal structure and …

Flow Field And Heat Transfer Analyses Of Mechanical Seals, Zhaogao Luan Jan 2007

Flow Field And Heat Transfer Analyses Of Mechanical Seals, Zhaogao Luan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mechanical seals are widely used in rotating equipment such as pumps, turbines and agitators to prevent leakage. One crucial factor for keeping seals reliable is the thermal behavior of the seal rings. The existing literature on thermal effects in seals primarily concentrates on the conduction of heat into the rings. Yet, a more complete analysis requires understanding of the flow field around the rings. In this dissertation, both the laminar and turbulent flows within the seal chamber are studied and their effects on the heat transfer in the seal rings are evaluated. Based on extensive sets of numerical simulations, heat …

The Rapid Template Fabrication Process For Producing A Liga Heat Exchanger Bonded To A Mechanical Seal, Jason Patrick Tuma Jan 2003

The Rapid Template Fabrication Process For Producing A Liga Heat Exchanger Bonded To A Mechanical Seal, Jason Patrick Tuma

LSU Master's Theses

Mechanical seals are widely used in the chemical processing, aerospace, and automotive, industries. When a mechanical seal fails, considerable cost is typically involved in replacing the seal. Most seal failures are a result of high temperatures generated by frictional heating. Effectively removing the heat generated would significantly increase the mechanical seal’s work life and lead to significant monetary savings. One method of removing the heat generated is bonding an effective LIGA micro heat exchanger to the mechanical seal and forcing coolant through the heat exchanger. Previous work on this subject revealed promising results, especially for micro heat exchangers with microstructures …

Hard Surface Coating Experimental Evaluation And Thermomechanical Analysis Of A Seal With Micro Heat Exchanger, Yifan Qiu Jan 2002

Hard Surface Coating Experimental Evaluation And Thermomechanical Analysis Of A Seal With Micro Heat Exchanger, Yifan Qiu

LSU Master's Theses

Mechanical face seals are important components of many rotating machinery. Minimizing the friction between seal faces and efficiently removing the heat generated between seal surfaces are two crucial considerations in the design of mechanical seal. Thin film coating and MEMS technology hold great promise for improving the performance of mechanical seals from the viewpoint of reducing friction and heat at the interface in these two aspects. To reveal what effect the coating and MEMS technology can have on tribological properties of seals, friction and wear characteristics of Ti-C:H coatings on seal-like rings and heat transfer performances of a seal prototype …
