A Novel Brain Computer Interface Design, Steven Vogan Aug 2023

A Novel Brain Computer Interface Design, Steven Vogan

Senior Honors Theses

A brain computer interface (BCI) is a system which connects neural signals to a computer system. They have been used for controlling systems including robotics, on-screen computer control such as mouse movement, typing, and synthesizing audio signals. Invasive, or implanted, systems are often long-term medical solutions, or used for research where very clear signal is required. Non-invasive systems usually rely on exterior signals gathered through a headset using one or more electrode sensors. These signals are composed of sums of neuron activation potentials from brain activity and can be used to determine particular aspects of brain function. All BCIs rely …

Pole Placement Of Linear Multidimensional Systems Using Unlimited Rank Output Feedback, Jasur Usmonovich Sevinov, Okila Khusanovna Boeva Apr 2023

Pole Placement Of Linear Multidimensional Systems Using Unlimited Rank Output Feedback, Jasur Usmonovich Sevinov, Okila Khusanovna Boeva

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

The problem of placing poles in linear multidimensional systems using a feedback matrix of unlimited rank is considered. The effect of output feedback of indefinite rank of the characteristic polynomial of a system with several variables is studied. The results are then used to obtain a recurrent pole placement algorithm without any restrictions on the rank of the output feedback matrix used. The algorithm is based on the pseudo-inverse concept of obtaining solutions to systems of linear equations using the least squares method and is computationally efficient.

Formative Assessment In Engineering Education: Exploring Ways To Enhance Students' Learning Achievement, Assad Iqbal Dec 2022

Formative Assessment In Engineering Education: Exploring Ways To Enhance Students' Learning Achievement, Assad Iqbal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Formative assessments have been found to enhance students’ learning across a variety of disciplines, educational levels, and laboratory and classroom settings. Research attributes the positive effects of formative assessments in improving students’ learning to its (backward and forward) testing effects. Moreover, formative assessments provide an extra opportunity to students to assess their learning early in the learning process, reflect on their learning, and identify address learning gaps and misconceptions (if any) using feedback.

However, optional nature of formative assessments and having no stakes associated with them to have any bearing on final grades offers two challenges to capitalize on their …

Effectiveness Of Rubrics In Assessing Student Learning, Nakul Shetty K, Priyanka Desai Kakade, Anu Shaju Areeckal Dec 2021

Effectiveness Of Rubrics In Assessing Student Learning, Nakul Shetty K, Priyanka Desai Kakade, Anu Shaju Areeckal

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

COVID-19 has forced educators across the world to switch to e-learning. However, online assessment platforms are not widely employed, and traditional assessment methods persist. There is a lack of appropriate feedback provided to students and negligible scope for students’ self-assessment of their learning. This can be rectified by employing e-rubrics for assessment by examiners as well as by students for self-assessment of their performance. We propose a case study investigating the effectiveness of a well-structured analytical rubric for assessment by examiners, as well as by students for self-assessment.

An Open-Baffle Motional Feedback Loudspeaker, Matthew Quinlivan, William Harvie May 2021

An Open-Baffle Motional Feedback Loudspeaker, Matthew Quinlivan, William Harvie

Honors Theses

A dynamic loudspeaker mounted in an open baffle has the same parameters as a loudspeaker in free space. A subwoofer mounted in an open baffle has a small total quality factor and therefore the frequency above which the driver has a significant output is too high despite the subwoofer's low resonant frequency. To address this issue, we implemented a motional feedback circuit with the goal of introducing both velocity feedback and acceleration feedback into the loudspeaker system and thus altering the resonant frequency and total quality factor of the system. After verifying the efficacy of our feedback circuit with computer …

High-energy nuclear physics experiments at the Jefferson Lab Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) require highly spin-polarization electron beams, produced from strained super-lattice GaAs photocathodes, activated to negative electron affinity in a photogun operating at 130 kV dc. A pair of Wien filter spin rotators in the injector defines the orientation of the electron beam polarization at the end station target. An upgrade of the CEBAF injector to better support the upcoming MOLLER experiment requires increasing the electron beam energy to 200 keV, to reduce unwanted helicity correlated intensity and position systematics and provide precise control of the polarization orientation. …

Reaching Performance In Heathy Individuals And Stroke Survivors Improves After Practice With Vibrotactile State Feedback, Valay A. Shah Apr 2020

Reaching Performance In Heathy Individuals And Stroke Survivors Improves After Practice With Vibrotactile State Feedback, Valay A. Shah

Dissertations (1934 -)

Stroke causes deficits of cognition, motor, and/or somatosensory functions. These deficits degrade the capability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). Many research investigations have focused on mitigating the motor deficits of stroke through motor rehabilitation. However, somatosensory deficits are common and may contribute importantly to impairments in the control of functional arm movement. This dissertation advances the goal of promoting functional motor recovery after stroke by investigating the use of a vibrotactile feedback (VTF) body-machine interface (BMI). The VTF BMI is intended to improve control of the contralesional arm of stroke survivors by delivering supplemental limb-state feedback to the …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

With external optical feedback (EOF), a laser diode (LD) can operate at different dynamic states. In this work, an LD with EOF is set at period-one (P1) oscillation state to generate microwave photonic (MWP) signal for sensing. Firstly, the P1 state boundary of the LD is determined and then the influence of the LD controllable parameters on the boundary is studied by solving the well-known Lang-Kobayashi equations. A set of parameters selection rule for designing an LD based MWP sensing system is obtained. In addition, a measurement algorithm for recovering the displacement from an MWP sensing signal is developed. By …

Exploiting Feedback Information In Cognitive Radio Systems, Sara Abozeid Attlla

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we consider a cognitive radio (CR) network where the primary network's feedback information is utilized to design access schemes for the secondary network, to exploit the underutilized primary spectrum resources. Secondary users (SUs) identify the spectrum opportunities by sensing the spectrum for primary users (PUs) activities and by listening to the PUs feedback. The feedback signals monitored in this research work are the channel quality indicator (CQI) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) available in the PUs network. For detecting the PUs activities, SUs employ hard/soft energy sensing. The secondary access decisions are optimized to maximize the SUs …

A Cost-Effective Software Testing Strategy Employing Online Feedback Information, Zhiquan Zhou, Arnaldo Sinaga, Willy Susilo, Lei Zhao, Kai-Yuan Cai Jan 2018

A Cost-Effective Software Testing Strategy Employing Online Feedback Information, Zhiquan Zhou, Arnaldo Sinaga, Willy Susilo, Lei Zhao, Kai-Yuan Cai

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

An online partitioning strategy is presented, in which test cases are selected based on feedback information collected during the testing process. The strategy differs from con- ventional approaches because the partitioning is performed online rather than off-line and because the partitioning is not based on program code or specifications. It can, therefore, be implemented in the absence of the source code or specification of the program under test. The cost-effectiveness of the proposed strategy has been empirically investigated with a set of subject programs, namely, SPACE, SED, GREP, and the Siemens Suite of Programs. The results demonstrate that the proposed …

Nonlinear Control Methods For Single-Ended Primary-Inductor Power Converters, Samet Biricik, Tuan Ngo, Hasan Komurcugil, Malabika Basu Jan 2017

Nonlinear Control Methods For Single-Ended Primary-Inductor Power Converters, Samet Biricik, Tuan Ngo, Hasan Komurcugil, Malabika Basu

Conference papers

This paper investigates nonlinear control methods for single-ended primary-inductor converters (SEPIC). The fastswitching and average models show the converter nonlinearity in terms of inductor currents, capacitor voltages, and the switching duty cycle. The control law intuitively should be nonlinear to drive and guarantee the system stability. Two different control laws based on the passivity and back-stepping technique are examined and designed to have asymptotically global stability in the system. Unlike the passivity method which regulates the duty cycle directly, the back-stepping method adjusts the switching duty by a driver integrator/low pass filter system. The simulation results have shown the benefits …

A Sound Idea: An Investigation Into Accessible Video Game Design For The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Luke James Brook Jan 2017

A Sound Idea: An Investigation Into Accessible Video Game Design For The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Luke James Brook

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

A widely accepted, and incorrect, assumption towards hearing accessibility in video games is that deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) users are those who encounter the least barriers and are generally well catered for. Rapid advancement in video game technology has seen video game sound evolve from simple blips generated by internal circuitry to fully realised digital audio used to convey critical information. To accommodate the DHH, this information needs to be conveyed in an alternative manner. However, evidence suggests existing accessible design solutions for the DHH lack specificity and are insufficient. Thus, the inability to hear, or hear well, …
