Functional Porous Polydimethlysiloxane As Piezoresistive And Piezoelectric Materials, Taissa Rose Michel
Functional Porous Polydimethlysiloxane As Piezoresistive And Piezoelectric Materials, Taissa Rose Michel
Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and zinc oxide (ZnO) were combined to create functionalized piezoresistive and piezoelectric sensors for pressure sensing and energy harvesting. Samples were foamed to show that the increased deformability of the foam sensors makes them suitable for a range of applications including dexterous robotics, tactile sensing, energy harvesting, and biosensing. Uniform dispersion of CNTs was achieved with chloroform as the solvent. Samples were foamed using chemical blowing and scaffolding but granulated sugar at 70% porosity resulted in foamed samples with the most consistent mechanical properties. Samples underwent tensile and compressive testing for their …
Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Parts: A Review, Jacob Pessin
Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Parts: A Review, Jacob Pessin
Honors Theses
Structural health monitoring has the potential to allow composite structures to be more reliable and safer, then by using more traditional damage assessment techniques. Structural health monitoring (SHM) utilizes individual sensor units that are placed throughout the load bearing sections of a structure and gather data that is used for stress analysis and damage detection. Statistical time based algorithms are used to analyze collected data and determine both damage size and probable location from within the structure. While traditional calculations and life span analysis can be done for structures made of isotropic materials such as steel or other metals, composites …
Development Of A Sonically Powered Biodegradable Nanogenerator For Bone Regeneration, Avi Patel
Development Of A Sonically Powered Biodegradable Nanogenerator For Bone Regeneration, Avi Patel
Honors Scholar Theses
Background: Reconstruction of bone fractures and defects remains a big challenge in orthopedic surgery. While regenerative engineering has advanced the field greatly using a combination of biomaterial scaffolds and stem cells, one matter of difficulty is inducing osteogenesis in these cells. Recent works have shown electricity’s ability to promote osteogenesis in stem cell lines when seeded in bone scaffolds; however, typical electrical stimulators are either (a) externally housed and require overcomplex percutaneous wires be connected to the implanted scaffold or (b) implanted non-degradable devices which contain toxic batteries and require invasive removal surgeries.
Objective: Here, we establish a biodegradable, piezoelectric …

Polymeric Pvdf Fibers For Piezoelectric Applications In Energy Harvesting, Misael E. Martinez
Polymeric Pvdf Fibers For Piezoelectric Applications In Energy Harvesting, Misael E. Martinez
Theses and Dissertations
This work focuses on developing and characterizing the piezoelectric response of Cerium doped Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) fine fibers and the effects of dopants and alignment on the formation of the β-phase and consequently on the piezoelectric performance. Six sets of fiber mats were prepared varying the concentration (2.5–7.5wt%) of Cerium (III) Nitrate-Hexahydrate and Ammonium-Cerium (IV) Sulfate-Dihydrate. Fiber mats were developed using the Forcespinning® technique and the angular velocity and dopant concentration were adjusted to obtain a synergy between fiber yield and fiber diameter. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy showed a significant enhancement in the PVDF β-phase and inhibition of the non-polar …
A Parametric Resonator With Low Threshold Excitation For Vibration Energy Harvesting, Shahrzad Towfighian, Wei Yang
A Parametric Resonator With Low Threshold Excitation For Vibration Energy Harvesting, Shahrzad Towfighian, Wei Yang
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
A parametric resonator for vibration energy harvesting is presented. Despite large responses from parametric resonance, two major drawbacks of parametric resonance harvesters are the high threshold excitation and narrow bandwidth. We addressed these two shortcomings by adding magnetic nonlinearity to the system. The proposed vibration energy harvester consists of two piezoelectric cantilevers beams, each with a magnetic tip. By controlling the distance between the two magnets, the threshold excitation level needed to trigger the parametric resonance decreases. Combining the softening and hardening behavior of the two magnetically coupled beams increases the frequency bandwidth. In addition, the amplitude of the response …
Additive Manufacturing Of Piezoelectric Photopolymer Ferroelectrets, Rami Abu Shammeh
Additive Manufacturing Of Piezoelectric Photopolymer Ferroelectrets, Rami Abu Shammeh
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Electroactive polymers are an emerging branch of smart materials that possess the capability to change shape in the presence of an electric field. Particularly, ferroelectrets are films of electrostatically charged dielectric polymer foam that comprise a growing portion of EAP literature. Ferroelectrets are characterized by a piezoelectric response and a quasi-permanent charge polarization owing to the dipoles created when the air cavities in the polymer matrix undergo dielectric breakdown. However, these cavities are often irregular in shape, size, and distribution when produced with conventional preparation methods. To overcome this, we employ a light-based additive manufacturing technique to create a hybrid …
Bouncing Dynamics Of A Class Of Mem/Nem Switching Systems, Mohamed Bognash
Bouncing Dynamics Of A Class Of Mem/Nem Switching Systems, Mohamed Bognash
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The aim of the present research is to understand the bouncing dynamic behavior of NEM/MEM switches in order to improve the switch performance and reliability. It is well known that the bouncing can dramatically degrade the switch performance and life; hence, in the present study, bouncing dynamics of a cantilever-based NME/MEM switch has been studied in detail. To this end, a model of a MEM switch that incorporates electrostatic force, squeeze film air damping force as well as asperity-based contact force has been proposed for an electrostatically actuated switch. An actuation force due to piezoelectric effects is further included in …
A Smart Implantable Bone Fixation Plate Providing Actuation And Load Monitoring For Orthopedic Fracture Healing, Brad Nelson
A Smart Implantable Bone Fixation Plate Providing Actuation And Load Monitoring For Orthopedic Fracture Healing, Brad Nelson
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Fracture non-union occurs in roughly 5-10% of all fracture cases, and current interventions are both time-consuming and costly. There is therefore significant incentive to develop new tools to improve fracture healing outcomes. Several studies have shown that low-magnitude, high-frequency (LMHF) mechanical loading can promote faster healing and reduce the risk of refracture in critical-size long bone fractures. This is typically done using whole-body vibration, which may result in undesirable systemic effects on the rest of the body. This work discusses an implantable piezoelectric fixation plate that can both apply LMHF loading directly to the fracture site using flexible scheduling and …

This work provides a comparative study of the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of randomly oriented and textured 0.88Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 -0.08K 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 -0.04BaTiO 3 (88NBT) ceramics. Textured ceramics were fabricated by template grain growth (TGG) method using NaNbO 3 (NN) for templates. For textured ceramics with 4 wt% NN templates, a Lotgering factor of 96% and piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 185 pC/N were obtained. Compared to the randomly oriented ceramics, textured ceramics show lower strain hysteresis (H = 7.6%), higher unipolar strain of 0.041% with corresponding large signal piezoelectric coefficient d 33* …
