Landfill fires are becoming a real threat to both people and environment due to lack of predictions and control methods. Processing of the infrared band from level-1 satellite images was employed and decades worth of archived data from USGS Earth Explorer databases were analyzed to obtain surface temperature values of Atlantic Waste Landfill, Virginia and Bridgeton Landfill, Missouri. Multitemporal thermal maps and frequency of maxima analysis maps of these two landfills showed the hotspots spreading through the waste site. Multifunctional "self-sensing" materials at the frontiers of current research are generally designed to gather only a single type of information (such as quasi-static strain data). This project introduces a new sensor that is both multifunctional and dual-response, indicating its ability to not only perform in mechanical and sensing functions but also in its ability to sense multiple types of response. Class F fly ash was hydrothermally modified in one- and two-step processes to prepare zeolites with enhanced adsorption characteristics. Highly crystalline X type zeolite and hydroxy sodalite were targeted as microporous and mesoporous zeolite and were successfully synthesized using fly ash precursor by adjusting Si/Al molar ratio in reaction mixture. The heavy metal removal performance of the obtained fly ash-based zeolites was investigated in batch Pb2+ adsorption experiments.

This thesis presents a novel framework for time series classification that leverages the geometric structure of covariance matrices when labeling signals. Our method maps each signal to a new multivariate localized feature signal (MLFS) representation, from which we compute a covariance descriptor. This robust MLFS covarieance representation handles classification tasks where the sampling rates of the signals vary within a class or classes. We demonstrate that by simply using the k-nearest neighbor classification rule and multiclass kernel support vector machine with the Riemannian metric between the MLFS convariance matrices, which produces state-of-the-art results on a number of standard datasets. The purpose of this research is to investigate muscular ligament and joint contact forces produced during squat jump exercise. An inverse dynamics, two dimensional, leg model is used to describe the motion in the sagittal plane. The lower extremity model includes two bones, tibia and femur, tibio-femoral ligaments, and muscles such as quadriceps, hamstrings, and gastrocnemius. This study presents and describes the development of a fully autonomous vehicle cruise control system covering the vehicle dynamics and control design needed to simulate such system. It encompasses obstacle avoidance, intelligent-and-optimal lane change as well as adaptive behavior. This study offers a comprehensive two-dimensional cruise control with three degrees of freedom and it is designed using active obstacle avoidance controllers. It also includes optimized fuzzy logic for optimal vehicle trajectory and an extensive array of control law methodology. The end work shows a complete simulation run using MATLAB and Simulink.

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies are increasingly competing with subtractive methods, and there are promising applications for additive technologies that are hybrid with traditional manufacturing methods. Poor surface roughness of additive manufactured parts continues to be a major challenge especially for advanced functional parts. In this study, effect of processing parameters are evaluated, optimized and verified by using the Box–Behnken design of experiment method. The results, for the first time, reveal that surface remelting has the potential to become a high speed approach for improving the roughness of non-horizontal surface of additive manufactured parts.

The Ultra Compact Combustor (UCC) presents a novel solution to the advancement of aircraft gas turbine engine performance. A high-g UCC design operates by diverting a portion of the axial compressor flow into a circumferential combustion cavity positioned about the engine outer diameter. The circumferential cavity (CC) provides the necessary residence length and time for combustion within reduced axial lengths; furthermore, high rates of centrifugal acceleration termed high-g loading are imposed upon the swirling cavity flow. The design of concrete bridges is primarily focused on strength characteristics. However, it is often the case that durability characteristics, specifically early deterioration of the bridge deck, requires expensive repairs before the designed service life of the bridge can come to term. Lin et al. (2012) identified the development of microcracks as a possible source of this early deterioration. He proposed that these microcracks propagated due to high local compressive stress induced by overweight trucks. Older adults are important users to consider in the evaluation of transportation services. Many older non-drivers take fewer trips than their driving peers. It is important that transportation services meet the needs of older adults to provide greater access to this subset of the population. This thesis applies the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate the thirty-one non-private transportation services that exist in southeastern Wisconsin.
