Experimental process simulation and quantification of microstructure development during processing are challenging due to limitations with machinery temperature capability, inadequate resolution and sampling volume of currently available characterization techniques, and difficulty characterizing material microstructures as close to processing-relevant conditions as possible. This dissertation addresses how process simulation can be performed using Gleeble thermomechanical technologies and how microstructure development during these processing simulations can be quantified both in-situ and ex-situ.

2xxx series aluminum alloys possess attractive properties for structural aerospace applications including high strength to weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and stable cryogenic performance. Solid state joining processes are often employed to reduce weld defects and improve weld performance/consistency as many alloys of this range have poor weldability for traditional fusion based joining techniques. One such process, self-reacting friction stir welding (SRFSW) allows for consistent high-quality, welding of large and curved articles is often used in the construction of large structures such as launch vehicle liquid propellant tanks.

Karst lakes are ubiquitous in ridge terrain settings in limestone aquifer coastal plain environments. In west-central Florida, these lakes are frequently connected to the Upper Floridan aquifer and have unique aquifer recharge characteristics. They have been selectively studied because they commonly have no or very limited surface water discharge and limited drainage areas, have appreciable surface water and groundwater interaction and leak to the deep aquifer. We investigated the adsorption, precipitation, and phytoavailability of uranium after reactions with soil, high-density polyethylene particles, and Mentha arvensis through the integration of batch experiments, plant exposure, microscopy, and spectroscopy. Soluble U (initially 100 µM) decreased by 98.6% (1.09 µM) at pH 5 and 86.2% (13.81 µM) at pH 7.5 after 0.1 h of reaction with 10 g of soil in solution. Heterogenous U precipitates were observed in weathered HDPE surfaces for experiments without soil at both pH conditions. This study identified microplastics and heavy metals in fields sites of freshwater systems in New Mexico and evaluated the interactions of arsenic (As) and uranium (U) with commercial microplastics for acidic and neutral pH in laboratory-controlled conditions. The potential interaction of microplastics with other contaminants is not well-established. Microplastics could interact with heavy metals in ecosystems with naturally elevated background concentrations of metals or affected by anthropogenic activities. Increasing trends in flooding events are projected to continue as climate changes have increased the chance of extreme weather events. Given the significant, damaging impacts of extreme floods, the ability to effectively model floods is crucial for risk management and mitigation of the impacts of these extreme flooding events. This dissertation presents a new framework for detecting and predicting large-scale flood risk in the United States using climate information. Climate variability and extreme events continue to worsen resulting in significant impacts to society and the environment. Quantifying precipitation variability, streamflow, and extreme events at local scale is crucial for local planning and management due to spatial and temporal precipitation variability which influences streamflow and thus, water resources. This study uses statistical tools to analyze 1895-2019 (125 years) of historical precipitation data to examine how long-term precipitation varies annually, seasonally, and monthly, and create climate classifications. Increases in the intensity and frequency of extreme events in Western North America (WNA) can cause significant socioeconomic problems and threaten existing infrastructure. In this study we analyze the impacts of climate change on hydroclimatic extremes and assess the role of internal variability over WNA, which collectively drain an area of about 1 million km2. High electrical conductivity Al-Zn-TM (TM=Transition metals) alloys with improved mechanical properties and thermal resistance are developed with an integrated computational material engineering (ICME) strategy. From a series of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) simulations assessing combinations of ternary alloys, Al-Zn-Ni and Al-Zn-Zr are determined as alloys with relatively high electrical conductivity compared to several other ternary Al alloy combinations. The zero-temperature stable structure of precipitates formed in these alloys are determined from computed enthalpy of formation as L12, with particular focus of examining the influence of Zn on stabilizing the desired L12 precipitate phase.

Homogenization heat treatment of as-cast billets is an important step in the processing of aluminum extrusions. Microstructural evolution during homogenization involves elimination of the eutectic morphology by spheroidisation of the interdendritic phases, minimization of the microsegregation across the grains through diffusion, dissolution of the low-melting phases, which enhances the surface finish of the extrusions, and precipitation of nano-sized dispersoids (for Cr-, Zr-, Mn-, Sc-containing alloys), which inhibit grain boundary motion to prevent recrystallization. Post-homogenization cooling reprecipitates some of the phases, changing the flow stress required for subsequent extrusion. Compared to forecasts of short-term precipitation accumulations (daily or shorter) at lead times larger than a few days, those of longer-term accumulations (3-daily or longer) are significantly more skillful owing to the larger temporal scale of aggregation. If one can utilize this skill present in medium-range precipitation forecast in hydrologic prediction, it is very likely that the lead time of hydrologic forecasts, in particular, of streamflow and soil moisture may be extended. Furthermore, in mountainous regions, such as the Upper Tennessee Valley, orographic precipitation plays a major role in both water supply and potential hazards due to flooding. Global sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies have a demonstrable effect on terrestrial climate dynamics throughout the continental U.S. SST variations have been correlated with greenness (vegetation densities) and precipitation via ocean-atmospheric interactions known as climate teleconnections. Prior research has demonstrated that teleconnections can be used for climate prediction across a wide region at sub-continental scales. Yet these studies tend to have large uncertainties in estimates by utilizing simple linear analyses to examine chaotic teleconnection relationships. Moreover, the spatiotemporal distribution of the precipitation is changing due to the climate changes. The western United States faces the problem of water scarcity, where the management and mitigation of available water supplies are further complicated by climate variability. The remote estimation of rainfall rate R is essential for the aviation industry, agriculture, and food warning. Radar, the current means of R estimation, is not available in much of the world. In addition, this measurement involves a level of inaccuracy. Using lightning to detect rain is a relatively inexpensive alternative to radar systems and can be done from existing satellites. The large emission and scattering signals of rain and ice, respectively, introduce large contributions to the measured brightness temperature. While this allows for accurate sensing of precipitation, it also results in degraded performance when retrieving other geophysical parameters, such as near-surface ocean winds. Most recently, research on stormwater detention ponds has focused on designs and operations that will improve the water quality of the discharge. Historically stormwater detention ponds were used to reduce the rate of runoff from the watershed area of using temporary storage to attenuate flow rates.

The study site was located near Orlando, Florida, and consisted of a detention pond, namely Lake Angel, which received stormwater runoff from a 131-acre area. Utah, located in the arid southwest, is a state that experience s chronic water shortages. The pattern of valleys and high mountain ranges that exists in the state produces sharply contrasting differences in climatic conditions . Desert valleys in the western portion may receive as few a s 4 inches of precipitation in a year while headwater areas in the Wasatch Mountains receive 60 inches or more. Wide cyclic as well a s geographical variations of precipitation added to uneven seasonal distribution makes development and efficient utilization of water resource s vital though difficult.

Data on monthly precipitation for three areas of Southern Utah--Beaver, Cedar City and Ephraim--and three areas of Northern Utah--Salt Lake City, Ogden and Logan--where a series of measuring stations were arranged as traverses from the valleys to the mountain tops; were assembled and analyzed.

The relationships between elevation and precipitation amounts were shown. The Southern Utah stations were drier at the same elevations than the Northern Utah stations and the differences became greater as the elevations increased. There was a close correlation between the high elevation and low elevation stations in the same traverse even with the above divergence.
