Development Of An Electrical Interface For A Lateral Field Excited Sensor System, Thomas J. Leighton Aug 2019

Development Of An Electrical Interface For A Lateral Field Excited Sensor System, Thomas J. Leighton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensor systems are utilized to provide critical information to an end user which may range from a physician in a heath care facility to a soldier in a battle field environment. The "heart" of the sensor system is the sensing platform, examples of which include semiconductor, piezoelectric and optical devices. The responses of these sensors must be converted into a format that the user can read and interpret. This conversion is achieved through integrating the sensing platform with an electrical interface.

The focus of this thesis is the development of the first electrical interface for Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) sensors …

Sensor Systems For Combustion Control, Aodhan Arias, Joshua Kyle Alba Wong, Joeny Zhen Jun 2019

Sensor Systems For Combustion Control, Aodhan Arias, Joshua Kyle Alba Wong, Joeny Zhen

Electrical Engineering

This project is the first iteration of a larger multi-year project working towards utilizing ammonia (NH3) as an alternative fuel. The purpose of this iteration is a proof of concept for the creation of a control loop that can measure oxygen levels in a system and control the flow rates of nitrogen and oxygen in order to maintain an ideal ratio metric flow to reduce the overall emissions of the system. It is the hope of this project that the concept can eventually be used to maximally reduce to the point of near complete elimination of NOx emissions …

A Low-Cost Planar Inkjet-Printed Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistor For Sensor And Circuit Applications, Md Toriqul Islam Jan 2019

A Low-Cost Planar Inkjet-Printed Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistor For Sensor And Circuit Applications, Md Toriqul Islam

All ETDs from UAB

The semiconductor-based transistor is an essential building block of electronic components, computing applications, and sensors. However, the fabrication of this primary electronic element is complex and costly, especially when considering flexible electronics for bio-sensing applications. This thesis work proposes a new circuit manufacturing technique to print planar inkjet-printed carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNTFET), sensor and circuits on paper and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film substrate to reduce the complexity of the system and to lower the cost of conventional fabrication schemes. Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are being used as semiconductor ink for an inkjet-printer to facilitate and fabricate two …

Smart Parking Deck, Ryne Turner, Matthew Mcdade, Julie Aichinger, Laveréna Wienclaw Jan 2019

Smart Parking Deck, Ryne Turner, Matthew Mcdade, Julie Aichinger, Laveréna Wienclaw

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Smart Parking Deck employs elementary circuit design elements and mobile application development. Each device module uses laser proximity sensors to check the availability of an individual parking space and a Zigbee unit to communicate with the adjacent device module. The modules are connected to a network hub that manages all of the incoming and outgoing parking data. This data is displayed on the mobile application. The system is easily manageable and energy efficient, significantly decreasing the costs associated with other smart parking systems on the market. This system is aimed at decreasing commute time for students by allowing them …
