Development Of The Mask Scentometer, A Comparison Of Ambient Odor Assessment Methods, And Their Application In Ground Truthing Atmospheric Dispersion Models, Christopher G. Henry

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is organized as four stand-alone papers. Paper No. 1 describes the development of the Mask Scentometer and reports dilution ratios measured during use by twelve different people. Dilution ratios at the Mask Scentometer’s five dilution-to-threshold (D/T) settings were found to be 0.35, 1, 2, 4.5 and 18. In Paper No.’s 2 and 4, ambient odor assessment methods were compared in both controlled laboratory conditions and in the field. Laboratory analysis of ambient air samples using dynamic triangular forced-choice olfactometry (DTFCO) did not correlate well with any of the ambient odor assessment methods. Average intensity-predicted D/T was roughly five …

A New Application For Fine Ground Rubber In The Control Of Odors From Livestock Manure Storage Structures, Lakshmi Koppolu, Richard K. Koelsch, Dennis D. Schulte, Crystal Powers, Dwaine Bundy Jul 2005

A New Application For Fine Ground Rubber In The Control Of Odors From Livestock Manure Storage Structures, Lakshmi Koppolu, Richard K. Koelsch, Dennis D. Schulte, Crystal Powers, Dwaine Bundy

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Conference Presentations and White Papers

The purpose of this project was to quantify the odor and gas emission benefits of a fine ground rubber cover on laboratory scale manure storage units and to evaluate the ability of a fine ground rubber cover applied to a commercial swine manure storage unit to remain intact and functional over an extended period of time. A three-inch cover of fine ground rubber reduced odors by 77 to 99 percent from the manure storage tanks over a six-week period. However, consistent reductions of NH3 emissions were not observed and H2S emissions from all manure storage treatments were …

Odor, H2S And Nh3 Emissions From Phototrophic And Non-Phototrophic Anaerobic Swine Lagoons, Jason Byler, Dennis D. Schulte, Richard K. Koelsch Aug 2004

Odor, H2S And Nh3 Emissions From Phototrophic And Non-Phototrophic Anaerobic Swine Lagoons, Jason Byler, Dennis D. Schulte, Richard K. Koelsch

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Conference Presentations and White Papers

Odor, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emission data were collected from three phototrophic and three non-phototrophic anaerobic swine lagoons in eastern Nebraska from May 27th to June 18th (late spring) and from July 7th to August 13th (summer). The greatest odor, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia emission rates were from non-phototrophic lagoons during late spring (24.5 OU m-2 s-1, 3.2 μg-H2S m-2 s-1, 34.9 kg NH3-N ha-1 d-1, respectively). Non-phototrophic lagoon odor, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emission rates were much higher in late spring than summer (24.5 vs. 4.8 …

Using Covers To Minimize Odor And Gas Emissions From Manure Storages, José R. Bicudo, David R. Schmidt, Larry D. Jacobson Feb 2004

Odor emissions from animal production sites are typically the leading cause of nuisance complaints. Locating facilities far from neighbors is often a solution to the odor problem, but this is not always an option for producers. Most often, reducing odor emissions from the farm is the only option available.
