Finite Time Singularities For The Locally Constrained Willmore Flow Of Surfaces, James A. Mccoy, Glen Wheeler Jan 2016

Finite Time Singularities For The Locally Constrained Willmore Flow Of Surfaces, James A. Mccoy, Glen Wheeler

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper we study the steepest descent L2-gradient flow of the functional Wλ1,λ2, which is the the sum of the Willmore energy, λ1-weighted surface area, and λ2-weighted enclosed volume, for surfaces immersed in R3. This coincides with the Helfrich functional with zero `spontaneous curvature'. Our first results are a concentration-compactness alternative and interior estimates for the flow. For initial data with small energy, we prove preservation of embeddedness, and by directly estimating the Euler-Lagrange operator from below in L2 we obtain that the maximal time of existence is finite. Combining this result …

The Polyharmonic Heat Flow Of Closed Plane Curves, Scott Parkins, Glen Wheeler Jan 2016

The Polyharmonic Heat Flow Of Closed Plane Curves, Scott Parkins, Glen Wheeler

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper we consider the polyharmonic heat flow of a closed curve in the plane. Our main result is that closed initial data with initially small normalised oscillation of curvature and isoperimetric defect flows exponentially fast in the C∞C∞-topology to a simple circle. Our results yield a characterisation of the total amount of time during which the flow is not strictly convex, quantifying in a sense the failure of the maximum principle.

Vehicle Classification By Estimation Of The Direction Angle In A Mixed Traffic Flow, Nguyen Viet Hung, Nguyen Hoang Dung, Le Chung Tran, Thang Manh Hoang, Nguyen Tien Dzung Jan 2016

Vehicle Classification By Estimation Of The Direction Angle In A Mixed Traffic Flow, Nguyen Viet Hung, Nguyen Hoang Dung, Le Chung Tran, Thang Manh Hoang, Nguyen Tien Dzung

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The application of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is very important in developing societies nowadays. Vehicle monitoring is one of the primary tasks of ITS, where vehicles are classified by lanes for traffic management, especially in case of a mixed flow of motorcycles and other automobiles in the transport system of Vietnam. This paper proposes a new approach in vehicle classification, which is based on evaluation of the direction angle of the first primary axis of each coming vehicle detected in the captured video sequence and map into the predetermined database to mark it as motorcycle or automobiles instead of consideration …

A Traffic Monitoring System For A Mixed Traffic Flow Via Road Estimation And Analysis, Nguyen Viet Hung, Le Chung Tran, Nguyen Hoang Dung, Thang Manh Hoang, Nguyen Tien Dzung Jan 2016

A Traffic Monitoring System For A Mixed Traffic Flow Via Road Estimation And Analysis, Nguyen Viet Hung, Le Chung Tran, Nguyen Hoang Dung, Thang Manh Hoang, Nguyen Tien Dzung

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) is the most important element in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), especially in a developing country like Vietnam with a mixed traffic flow of vehicles including motocycles and cars. A traffic flow varies in different daytime, therefore the adoption of the TMS for an adaptive control of the traffic light timing is very essential. The proposed TMS system uses one CCD camera mounted to view from the rear of moving vehicles appearing in a distance from a viewed span of the camera to the stopline of the cross-roads, which is denoted by L and statistically …
