Microstructures Of Conducting Polymers: Patterning And Actuation Study, Babita Gaihre, Bo Weng, Syed A. Ashraf, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Peter C. Innis, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The conducting polymers exhibit electrochemically driven expansion and shrinkage due to ingress and egress of dopant ions in response to potential applied. In this paper, we report on patterning of microdots and microsquares of polypyrrole (PPy), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and poly(3,3-dihexyl-3-4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4b][1,4]-dioxepine PProDOT(Hx) 2 and their behaviour under voltage change. Stainless steel mesh was used to deposit microdots and inkjet-printed cellulose girds were used to deposit microsqures of the conducting polymers on the ITO surface. It was found that PPy showed distinct actuation in the z direction while colour change was prominent in the case of PEDOT and PProDOT(Hx)2.

A Study On The Suitability Of Cable Models To Simulate Switching Transients In A 132 Kv Underground Cable, Muhamad Zalani Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Switching transients resulting from the energisation of high voltage cable systems may have a significant effect on both the cables being switched as well as the power system components in the vicinity. The impacts of these transients on such cables are measured based on the stress arising as a result of the voltage and current peaks and the frequency of oscillatory transients. These quantities are typically obtained from a simulation by using a suitable cable model, normally with the capability to predict the transient behaviour in the range up to several 10 kHz. To obtain a cable model that enables …

MOSkin detectors were studied to perform real-time in vivo dose measurements in high dose rate prostate brachytherapy. Measurements were performed inside an urethral catheter in a gel phantom simulating a real prostate implant. Measured and expected doses were compared and the discrepancy was found to be within 8.9% and 3.8% for single MOSkin and dual-MOSkin configurations, respectively. Results show that dual-MOSkin detectors can be profitably adopted in prostate brachytherapy treatments to perform real-time in vivo dosimetry inside the urethra.

Parametric Study On Chain-Die Forming For Advanced High Strength Steels, Yuankun Zhang, Shichao Ding

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

As the applications of AHSS for the automotive industry are increasing significantly within the last decade, it becomes more and more important to develop a new forming technology as an alternative or even a replacement to roll forming to overcome the difficulties and problems of manufacturing the AHSS parts. The springback of the material with higher strength and thinner thickness becomes more difficult to predict, which directly affects the application of roll forming in AHSS. Chain-die forming, as an alternative to roll forming proposed and developed recently in Australia, is expected to be a solution to the problems addressed. It …

A Joint Theoretical And Experimental Study For Elastic Electron Scattering From 1,4-Dioxane, P Palihawadana, J P. Sullivan, S J. Buckman, Z Masin, J D. Gorfinkiel, F Blanco, G Garcia, M J. Brunger

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present results of measurements and calculations of elastic electron scattering from 1,4-dioxane in the energy range of 0–1000 eV. Absolute differential and integral elastic cross sections have been measured using a crossed electron-molecule beam spectrometer and the relative flow technique, at four energies in the 10–30 eV range and for scattered electrons in the angular range 20◦–129◦. The measured cross sections are compared with results from R-matrix computations, at the static exchange plus polarization level, calculated at energies between 0–20 eV, and with calculations employing the independent atom model with the screening corrected additivity rule (IAM-SCAR). Those latter computations …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a radiation treatment technique capable of delivering large dose rates to the tumor. Radiation is delivered using remote afterloaders to drive highly active sources (commonly 192Ir with an air KERMA strength range between 20 000 and 40 000 U, where 1 U = 1 uGy m2/h in air) through applicators directly into the patient's prescribed region of treatment. Due to the obvious ramifications of incorrect treatment while using such an active source, it is essential that there are methods for quality assurance (QA) that can directly and accurately verify the treatment plan and the …

Nitrogen Removal From Natural Gas Using Solid Boron: A First-Principles Computational Study, Qiao Sun, Meng Wang, Zhen Li, Ping Li, Weihua Wang, Xiaojun Tan, Aijun Du

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Selective separation of nitrogen (N2) from methane (CH4) is highly significant in natural gas purification, and it is very challenging to achieve this because of their nearly identical size (the molecular diameters of N2 and CH4 are 3.64 Å and 3.80 Å, respectively). Here we theoretically study the adsorption of N2 and CH4 on B12 cluster and solid boron surfaces a-B12 and c-B28. Our results show that these electron-deficiency boron materials have higher selectivity in adsorbing and capturing N2 than CH4, which provides very useful information for experimentally exploiting boron materials for natural gas purification.

Aging Effect Evolution During Ferroelectric-Ferroelectric Phase Transition: A Mechanism Study, Zuyong Feng, Zhenxiang Cheng, Dongqi Shi, S X. Dou Jan 2013

Aging Effect Evolution During Ferroelectric-Ferroelectric Phase Transition: A Mechanism Study, Zuyong Feng, Zhenxiang Cheng, Dongqi Shi, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Aging can significantly modify the dielectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric performance of ferroelectrics. However, little attention has been paid to the aging effect during ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transitions that is essentially correlated with real applications. In this letter, the authors report the aging effect evolution between two ferroelectric phases in an acceptor-doped piezoceramics. The results show that aging-induced double hysteresis loops were exhibited in different ferroelectric phases, but disappeared during ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transitions, suggesting the mechanism that the intrinsic restoring force for the reversible switching of domains caused by the alignment of defect dipoles was weakened due to ferroelectric dipole reorientation.

A Study Of Tio2 Binder-Free Paste Prepared For Low Temperature Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Jeremy H. Yune, Inna Karatchevtseva, Gerri Triani, Klaudia Wagner, David Officer

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A binder-free titania paste was prepared by chemical modification of an acidic TiO2 sol with ammonia. By varying the ammonia concentration, the viscosity of the acidic TiO2 suspension increased, thereby allowing uniform films to be cast. The photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2 electrodes, cast as single layers, was dependent on the thermal treatment cycle. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the extent of residual organics and found that acetates from the TiO2 precursor preparation were retained within the electrode structure after thermal treatment at 150 °C. Electrodes of nominal thickness 4 lm produced an energy conversion efficiency as high …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The stress gradient generated due to electrochemical oxidation/reduction of a conducting polymer in a bilayer actuator causes a bending movement. Here we report a comparative study of the displacement of bilayer actuators prepared using different conducting polymers. The effects of conducting polymers obtained from electrochemical or chemical synthesis route: different polymers (polypyrrole (PPy), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PEDOT and poly(3,3-dihexyl-3-4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4b][1,4]-dioxepine [PProDOT(Hx) 2]); and different electrolytes (0.1 M lithium trifluromethanesulfonate/propylenecarbonate (LiTFSI/PC) and 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium trifluromethanesulfonate (EMITFSI)) on the displacement amplitude and displacement patterns of these actuators were investigated and compared. The results indicate that the bilayer actuator consisting of an electrochemically synthesized conducting polymer …

Study On The Influence Of Temperature On The Surface Asperity In Micro Cross Wedge Rolling, H N. Lu, D B. Wei, Z Y. Jiang, D Wu, X M. Zhao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

When the common deformation processes are scaled down to micro/meso dimensions, size effect is the particular phenomena in microforming, which is related to the dominant influence of single grains inside the micropart. The conventional cross wedge rolling (CWR) is introduced into the micro scale in order to take the advantages of CWR. The micro cross wedge rolling (MCWR) has to confront with the phenomena of size effect that occurs in the common microforming processes inevitably. One of the approaches to compensate size effect is to increase the deforming temperature. An increased formability is achieved because more slip systems of polycrystal …

Study Of Shear-Stiffened Elastomers, Tongfei Tian, Weihua Li, Jie Ding, Gursel Alici, Haiping Du

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Shear thickening fluids, which are usually concentrated colloidal suspensions composed of non-aggregating solid particles suspended in fluids, exhibit a marked increase in viscosity beyond a critical shear rate. This increased viscosity is seen as being both 'field-activated', due to the dependence on shearing rate, as well as reversible. Shear thickening fluids have found good applications as protection materials, such as in liquid body armor, vibration absorber or dampers. This research aims to expand the protection material family by developing a novel solid status shear thickening material, called shear-stiffened elastomers. These new shear-stiffened elastomers were fabricated with the mixture of silicone …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents the application of four nonlinear methods of feature extraction in slewing bearing condition monitoring and prognosis: these are largest Lyapunov exponent, fractal dimension, correlation dimension, and approximate entropy methods. Although correlation dimension and approximate entropy methods have been used previously, the largest Lyapunov exponent and fractal dimension methods have not been used in vibration condition monitoring to date. The vibration data of the laboratory slewing bearing test-rig run at 1 rpm was acquired daily from February to August 2007 (138 days). As time progressed, a more accurate observation of the alteration of bearing condition from normal to …

An Investigation On The Impacts Of Density Currents On The Sedimentation In Dam Reservoirs Using Tcm Model; Case Study: Maroon Dam, Farhad Fakheri Raof, Mohammad Hossein Naghshine, Ali Khoshrftar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Sedimentation in dams' reservoirs is one of the most pressing concerns facing dams today. Maroon reservoir dam, located in Khuzestan Province, is one of the most important dams in this region. Since it is a new constructed dam, numerical simulation of sedimentation trend in its reservoirs could significantly help on a better utilization. To this end, TCM model which is capable to simulate density currents was used. The obtained results show that the dam loses about 91 million m3 of its reservoirs during a 50-year exploitation period.

Similarity-Based Search For Model Checking: A Pilot Study With Java Pathfinder, Elmin Ibrahimov, Jixing Wang, Zhiquan Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

When a model checker cannot explore the entire state space because of limited resources, model checking becomes a kind of testing with an attempt to find a failure (violation of properties) quickly. We consider two state sequences in model checking: (i) the sequence in which new states are generated, and (ii) the sequence in which the states generated in sequence (i) are checked for property violation. We observe that neighboring states in sequence (i) often have similarities in certain ways. Based on this observation we propose a search strategy, which generates sequence (ii) in such a way that similar states …

Study Of Pdms Based Magnetorheological Elastomers, Tongfei Tian, Xing Zhong Zhang, Weihua Li, Gursel Alici, J Ding

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The fabrication of conventional magnetorheological elastomers (MRE) is usually taken more than 1 day because the conventional matrixes such as natural rubber and silicone rubber need long curing time to become solid state. This study presents a rapid method for fabricating MRE within 90 minutes by using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as the matrix thanks to the rapid curing of PDMS in high temperature. A total of four PDMS based MRE samples were fabricated. Their mechanical and rheological properties under both steady-state and dynamic loading conditions were tested with a parallel-plate rheometer. Additionally, the microstructures of the PDMS based MREs were also …
