Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A graded distribution of antidots in superconducting a-Mo 79Ge21 thin films has been investigated by magnetization and magneto-optical imaging measurements. The pinning landscape has maximum density at the sample border, decreasing linearly towards the center. Its overall performance is noticeably superior than that for a sample with uniformly distributed antidots: For high temperatures and low fields, the critical current is enhanced, whereas the region of thermomagnetic instabilities in the field-temperature diagram is significantly suppressed. These findings confirm the relevance of graded landscapes on the enhancement of pinning efficiency, as recently predicted by Misko and Nori [Phys. Rev. B 85, 184506 …

Additive-Free Synthesis Of 3d Porous V2o5 Hierarchical Microspheres With Enhanced Lithium Storage Properties, Chaofeng Zhang, Zhixin Chen, Zaiping Guo, Xiong Wen Lou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A facile synthesis of novel 3D porous V2O5 hierarchical microspheres has been developed, based on an additive-free solvothermal method and subsequent calcination. Due to their unique structure, these V2O5 microspheres display a very stable capacity retention of 130 mA h g (1) over 100 cycles at a current rate of 0.5 C, and show excellent rate capability with a capacity of 105 mA h g (1) even at the 30 C rate. The good electrochemical performance suggests that this unique hierarchical V2O5 material could be a promising candidate as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Reactive power has become a vital resource in modern electricity networks due to increased penetration of distributed generation. This paper examines the extended reactive power capability of DFIGs to improve network stability and capability to manage network voltage profile during transient faults and dynamic operating conditions. A coordinated reactive power controller is designed by considering the reactive power capabilities of the rotor-side converter (RSC) and the grid-side converter (GSC) of the DFIG in order to maximise the reactive power support from DFIGs. The study has illustrated that, a significant reactive power contribution can be obtained from partially loaded DFIG wind …

Evaluations Of Heuristic Algorithms For Teamwork-Enhanced Task Allocation In Mobile Cloud-Based Learning, Geng Sun, Jun Shen, Junzhou Luo, Jianming Yong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Enhancing teamwork performance is a significant issue in mobile cloud-based learning. We introduce a service oriented system, Teamwork as a Service (TaaS), to realize a new approach for enhancing teamwork performance in the mobile cloud environment. To coordinate most learners' talents and give them more motivation, an appropriate task allocation is necessary. Utilizing the Kolb's learning style (KLS) to refine learner's capabilities, and combining their preferences and tasks' difficulties, we formally describe this problem as a constraint optimization model. Two heuristic algorithms, namely genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA), are employed to tackle the teamwork-enhanced task allocation, and their …

Enhanced Through-The-Wall Radar Imaging Using Bayesian Compressive Sensing, V H. Tang, A Bouzerdoum, S L. Phung, F H. C Tivive

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, a distributed compressive sensing (CS) model is proposed to recover missing data samples along the temporal frequency domain for through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI). Existing CS-based approaches recover the signal from each antenna independently, without considering the correlations among measurements. The proposed approach, on the other hand, exploits the structure or correlation in the signals received across the array aperture by using a hierarchical Bayesian model to learn a shared prior for the joint reconstruction of the high-resolution radar profiles. A backprojection method is then applied to form the radar image. Experimental results on real TWRI data show …

The advent of cloud computing has dramatically changed the IT scene, as it offers cost savings and improvements to major operations. Nevertheless, the major obstacle relies on the effort on how to secure sensitive data files that are outsourced to the cloud environment. To ensure confidentiality, the sensitive data are usually encrypted prior to being outsourced. Nevertheless, effective data utilization remains a challenging task and there is a clear need for a secure and efficient searching mechanism over the encrypted data in the cloud, to increase the us-ability of the secure cloud environment. Unfortunately, existing work in the area of …

Mixed-Metal (Li, Al) Amidoborane: Synthesis And Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties, Guanglin Xia, Yingbin Tan, Xiaowei Chen, Zaiping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu, Xuebin Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Mixed-metal (Li, Al) amidoborane has been synthesized via mechanical ball milling of ammonia borane with lithium hexahydridoaluminate in different molar ratios. The reversible dehydrogenation properties of the thus-synthesized metallic amidoborane and its mixtures with ammonia borane in different ratios were systematically investigated in comparison with neat ammonia borane (AB). On the basis of thermogravimetric analysis and mass spectrometry results, the thus-synthesized mixed-metal amidoborane was shown to release around 10 wt% hydrogen below 200 degrees C, with an effective suppression of volatile side products. Furthermore, a synergistic effect between metallic amidoborane and ammonia borane has been identified, which leads to the …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report a simple one step protocol for the preparation of fairly monodisperse and highly water-soluble magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) through a co-precipitation method using a novel multifunctional, biocompatible and water-soluble polymer ligand dodecanethiol-polymethacrylic acid (DDT-PMAA). DDT-PMAA owing to its several intrinsic properties, not only efficiently controls the size of the MIONs but also gives them excellent water solubility, long time stability against aggregation and oxidation, biocompatibility and multifunctional surface rich in thioether and carboxylic acid groups. The molecular weight and concentration of the polymer ligand were optimized to produce ultrasmall (4.6 +/- 0.7 nm) MIONs with high magnetization …

Aqueous Dispersions Of Reduced Graphene Oxide And Multi Wall Carbon Nanotubes For Enhanced Glucose Oxidase Bioelectrode Performance, Willo Grosse, Joffrey Champavert, Sanjeev Gambhir, Gordon G. Wallace, Simon E. Moulton

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Aqueous dispersions of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were fabricated through a modified chemical reduction method. The significant advantage of the method developed here is the omission of any stabilising compound or organic solvent to obtain stable rGO-MWCNT dispersions. Significantly biological entities, in this case the enzyme glucose oxidase (GOx), can be successfully incorporated into the dispersion. These dispersions were characterised using XPS, SEM, zeta potential and particle size measurements which showed that the dispersion stability is not sacrificed with the addition of GOx, and significantly, the electrical properties of the rGO and MWCNTs are …

Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal And Its Modeling For The Activated Sludge And Membrane Bioreactor Processes, M F. R Zuthi, W S. Guo, H H. Ngo, L D. Nghiem, F I. Hai

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A modified activated sludge process (ASP) for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) needs to sustain stable performance for wastewater treatment to avoid eutrophication in the aquatic environment. Unfortunately, the overall efficiency of the EBPR in ASPs and membrane bioreactors (MBRs) is frequently hindered by different operational/system constraints. Moreover, although phosphorus removal data from several wastewater treatment systems are available, a comprehensive mathematical model of the process is still lacking. This paper presents a critical review that highlights the core issues of the biological phosphorus removal in ASPs and MBRs while discussing the inhibitory process requirements for other nutrients' removal. This …

Enhanced Boron Rejection By Nf/Ro Membranes By Complexation With Polyols: Measurement And Mechanisms, Kha L. Tu, Allan R. Chivas, Long D. Nghiem Jan 2013

Enhanced Boron Rejection By Nf/Ro Membranes By Complexation With Polyols: Measurement And Mechanisms, Kha L. Tu, Allan R. Chivas, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Boron rejection by nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes in the presence of glycerol, mannitol and sorbitol was investigated as a function of feed solution pH and boron:polyol molar ratio. In the presence of polyols, significant boron rejection improvement was obtained and the extent of the impact was directly related to the stability constant of the boron-polyol complex. Polyols could complex with boron in either the boric acid or borate anion forms; however the complexation between polyol and boric acid appeared to be incomplete. With and without the presence of polyols, boron rejection was strongly pH dependent. The increase …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Lithium ion batteries are attractive power sources for the consumer electronics market and are being aggressively developed for road transportation. Nevertheless, issues with safety and reliability need to be solved prior to the large-scale uptake of these batteries. There have recently been significant development and assessment of materials with resistance to mechanical abuse, with the aims of reinforcing the battery and preventing puncturing during a crash. Most of the work on battery mechanical safety has concentrated on the external packaging of batteries, with little attention being paid to the enclosed electrolyte. We report on smart multifunctional fluids that act as …

Stabilization Of Nazn(Bh4)3 Via Nanoconfinement In Sba-15 Towards Enhanced Hydrogen Release, Guanglin Xia, Li Li, Zaiping Guo, Qinfen Gu, Yanhui Guo, Xuebin Yu, Hua-Kun Liu, Zongwen Liu

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

In the present work, the decomposition behaviour of NaZn(BH4)3 nanoconfined in mesoporous SBA-15 has been investigated in detail and compared to bulk NaZn(BH4)3 that was ball milled with SBA-15, but not nanoconfined. The successful incorporation of nanoconfined NaZn(BH4)3 into mesopores of SBA-15 was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, 11B nuclear magnetic resonance, nitrogen absorption/desorption isotherms, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. It is demonstrated that the dehydrogenation of the space-confined NaZn(BH4)3 is free of emission of boric by-products, and significantly improved hydrogen release kinetics is also achieved, with pure hydrogen release at temperatures …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The exquisite soft-tissue contrast of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has meant that the technique is having an increasing role in contouring the gross tumor volume (GTV) and organs at risk (OAR) in radiation therapy treatment planning systems (TPS). MRI-planning scans from diagnostic MRI scanners are currently incorporated into the planning process by being registered to CT data. The soft-tissue data from the MRI provides target outline guidance and the CT provides a solid geometric and electron density map for accurate dose calculation on the TPS computer. There is increasing interest in MRI machine placement in radiotherapy clinics as an adjunct …

Polypyrrole-Coated Α-Lifeo2 Nanocomposite With Enhanced Electrochemical Properties For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Zhi-Jia Zhang, Jia-Zhao Wang, Shulei Chou, Hua-Kun Liu, Kiyoshi Ozawa, Hui-Jun Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A conducting alpha-LiFeO2-polypyrrole (alpha-LiFeO2-PPy) nanocomposite material was prepared by the chemical polymerization method as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. The porous alpha-LiFeO2 was prepared via the microwave hydrothermal method and a post-annealing. The X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy measurements showed that the alpha-LiFeO2 nanoparticles were coated with PPy. The polypyrrole coating improves the reversible capacity and cycling stability (104 mAh g(-1) at 0.1C after 100 cycles) for lithium-ion batteries. Even at the high rate of 10C, the electrode showed more than 40% of the capacity at low rate (0.1C).

Modification Of A Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membrane By Heat Treatment For Enhanced Fouling Resistance, Takahiro Fujioka, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The use of heat treatment to improve solute rejection and fouling resistance of a polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was investigated in this study. Heat treatment was carried out by immersing the membrane samples in Milli-Q water at 70 degrees celcius for a specific duration. Heat treatment reduced the pure water permeability from 4.1 to 2.8 L/m2 bar but improved conductivity rejection from 95.5 to 97.0 percent. As a result, a correlation was observed between changes in the two parameters. Marginal changes in the membrane surface characteristics were observed as a result of heat treatment. Heat treatment significantly improved the …

Enhanced Rate Performance Of Cobalt Oxide/Nitrogen Doped Graphene Composite For Lithium Ion Batteries, Dan Li, Dongqi Shi, Zhixin Chen, Hua-Kun Liu, Dianzeng Jia, Zaiping Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Ultrafine Co3O4 nanocrystals homogeneously attached to nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by the hydrothermal reaction method are demonstrated as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Transmission electron microscope images revealed that the crystal size of Co3O4 in Co3O4/N-rGO and Co3O4/rGO is 5-10 nm, much smaller than that of bare Co3O4, indicating that the reduced graphene oxide sheets with Co3O4 nanocrystals attached could hinder the growth and aggregation of Co3O4 crystals during synthesis. The graphene sheets can also effectively buffer the volume change of Co3O4 upon lithium insertion/extraction, thus improving the cycling performance of the composite electrodes. The doped nitrogen …
