Resilient Modulus Of Compacted Crushed Stone Aggregate Bases, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, Charlie Sun Nov 2007

Resilient Modulus Of Compacted Crushed Stone Aggregate Bases, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, Charlie Sun

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In recent years, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has recommended the use of resilient modulus for characterizing highway materials for pavement design. This recommendation evolved as result of a trend in pavement design of using mechanistic models. Although much progress has been made in recent years in developing mathematical, mechanistic pavement design models, results obtained from those models are only as good as the material parameters used in the models. Resilient modulus of aggregate bases is an important parameter in the mechanistic models. The main goal of this study was to establish a simple and efficient …

Fast Pyrolysis Of Biomass In A Circulating Fluidised Bed, Manon Van De Velden, Xianfeng Fan, Andy Ingram, Jan Baeyens May 2007

Fast Pyrolysis Of Biomass In A Circulating Fluidised Bed, Manon Van De Velden, Xianfeng Fan, Andy Ingram, Jan Baeyens

The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering

CFB biomass pyrolysis produces mostly bio-oil. Reaction rates are fast (k > 0.5 s-1). Yields exceed 60 wt% of bio-oil at 500 °C and at a residence time for oil and char t < 2.5 s. as achieved in plug flow CFB-mode, shown by PEPT to occur at U > (Utr + 1) m/s and G > 200 kg/m² s.

Performance Characteristics Of A Therapeutic Ultrasound Wire Waveguide, Graham Gavin, Garrett Mcguinness, Finbar Dolan, M.S. Hashmi Mar 2007

Performance Characteristics Of A Therapeutic Ultrasound Wire Waveguide, Graham Gavin, Garrett Mcguinness, Finbar Dolan, M.S. Hashmi

Articles

Therapeutic ultrasound angioplasty has been investigated, clinically, by a number of researchers and represents a potentially promising therapy for the treatment of atherosclerotic lesions. To date, there has been no detailed analysis of the effect of mechanical design parameters, such as wire geometry or damping characteristics, on wire waveguide performance. An apparatus capable of delivering therapeutic ultrasound down small diameter nickel–titanium (NiTi) wire waveguides is described. The output peak-to-peak (p–p) displacements at the distal tip of a 1.0mm diameter waveguide were measured experimentally, by means of an optical microscope and image analysis software. The output was measured for a range …

Discovering Prediction Model For Environmental Distribution Maps, Ke Zhang, Huidong Jin, Nianjun Liu, Rob Lesslie, Lei Wang, Zhouyu Fu, Terry Caelli Jan 2007

Discovering Prediction Model For Environmental Distribution Maps, Ke Zhang, Huidong Jin, Nianjun Liu, Rob Lesslie, Lei Wang, Zhouyu Fu, Terry Caelli

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Currently environmental distribution maps, such as for soil fertility, rainfall and foliage, are widely used in the natural resource management and policy making. One typical example is to predict the grazing capacity in particular geographical regions. This paper uses a discovering approach to choose a prediction model for real-world environmental data. The approach consists of two steps: (1) model selection which determines the type of prediction model, such as linear or non-linear; (2) model optimisation which aims at using less environmental data for prediction but without any loss on accuracy. The latter step is achieved by automatically selecting non-redundant features …

Towards An Integrated Model Of Enterprise Systems, Grace A. Kennedy, C E. Siemieniuch, M A. Sinclair Jan 2007

Towards An Integrated Model Of Enterprise Systems, Grace A. Kennedy, C E. Siemieniuch, M A. Sinclair

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

An enterprise system consists of a number of components or building blocks. It is common to use views or models of the enterprise that contain a selection of these components (dependent on the intended usage of the model). The premise is that if these views are considered systems in their own right then the total enterprise system is actually a system‐of‐systems. Difficulty arises however when the boundaries between the systems overlap ‐ it is therefore necessary to have an integrated model of the total enterprise that can cope with these overlaps and hence interactions between the systems. Within this paper …

A Task Model Of Software Intensive Acquisitions: An Integrated Tactical Avionics System Case Study, Ricardo Peculis, Derek Rogers, Peter Campbell Jan 2007

A Task Model Of Software Intensive Acquisitions: An Integrated Tactical Avionics System Case Study, Ricardo Peculis, Derek Rogers, Peter Campbell

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The acquisition of complex software intensive systems is fraught with significant risks and often incurs schedule delays, cost overruns and reduced functionality when the product is finally delivered. This paper presents a model to assess the effectiveness of software intensive acquisitions, founded on the premise that the solution depends on a series of transformations that transform input products in one domain into output products in another domain. Transformations are performed by people, and require knowledge and skills pertinent to both input and output domains. Ideally, products should be transformed without distortions resulting into the desirable solution. In reality, distortions occur …

Fault Diagnosis In Multi-Station Assembly Systems Using An Agent-Based Simulation Model, Nagesh Shukla, Manoj Tiwari, Darek Ceglarek Jan 2007

Fault Diagnosis In Multi-Station Assembly Systems Using An Agent-Based Simulation Model, Nagesh Shukla, Manoj Tiwari, Darek Ceglarek

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Today’s automotive industries require quick ramp-up in order to shorten the time to market and fulfill greater demand for product variety. Since, dimensional tolerance problems are one of the main causes for delay during ramp-up in multi-station assembly systems; hence, rapid diagnosis of faults contributing to dimensional errors is of significant concern. This paper presents an agent-based simulation model (ABSM) which integrates model-based and data-based diagnostics for fault diagnosis and correction in multi-station assembly processes. The fault causing variation sources, their effects on dimensional accuracy, diagnosis from sensors data and corrective actions in multi-station assembly systems are simulated using proposed …

Mathematical Model To Predict Solids Content Of Water Treatment Residuals During Drying, Ali Gharaibeh, Muttucumaru Sivakumar, Dharmappa Hagare Jan 2007

Mathematical Model To Predict Solids Content Of Water Treatment Residuals During Drying, Ali Gharaibeh, Muttucumaru Sivakumar, Dharmappa Hagare

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Dewatering and drying of residuals are extremely energy intensive processes, which are necessary to reduce the quantity of wet residuals produced from the water and wastewater treatment operations. Meteorological conditions are a major factor in the drying of residuals, which can greatly affect the drying period. A mathematical model is developed for the process of drying of water treatment residuals. A steady-state heat-balance equation is applied for a control volume of residuals that takes into account the heat transfer by radiation, convection, and evaporation. The mathematical model was validated using drying experiments conducted in a wind tunnel as well as …
