As a part of a National Pork Producers Council educational program, our research and extension team at the University of Kentucky was linked with an independent commercial swine producer to test the NCPIG model against observed commercial on-farm data. This experience provided improved information for model development as well as increased producer insight into the data input needs and potential benefits of modeling. Detailed production information comparisons between the NCPIG model and producer data are presented for summer time conditions to assess the validity of the NCPIG model for simulation of grow-finish swine performance. Results demonstrated that the NCPIG model …

Disaggregation Procedures For Stochastic Hydrology Based On Nonparametric Density Estimation, David G. Tarboton, Ashish Sharma, Upmanu L. Lall

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Synthetic simulation of streamflow sequences is important for the analysis of water supply reliability. Disaggregation models are an important component of the stochastic streamflow generation methodology. They provide the ability to simulate multiseason and multisite streamflow sequences that preserve statistical properties at multiple timescales or space scales. In recent papers we have suggested the use of nonparametric methods for streamflow simulation. These methods provide the capability to model time series dependence without a priori assumptions as to the probability distribution of streamflow. They remain faithful to the data and can approximate linear or nonlinear dependence. In this paper we extend …

Simulation Studies With A Continuously Online Trained Artificial Neural Network Controller For A Micro-Turbogenerator, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 1998

Simulation Studies With A Continuously Online Trained Artificial Neural Network Controller For A Micro-Turbogenerator, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports on the simulation studies carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the practical implementation of a continuously online trained (COT) artificial neural network (ANN) controller to identify the continuous changing complex nonlinear dynamics of the power system, and another COT ANN to control a micro-turbogenerator which consists of a turbine simulator and a micro-alternator connected to an infinite bus through a short transmission line in a laboratory environment. This neural network controller augments/replaces the traditional automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and the turbine governor of the generator. Simulation and practical results are presented to show that this COT ANN identifier/controller …

Modeling And Optimization Of The Indiana Land Merge Control System On Approaches To Freeway Work Zones, Part I: Implementation Report; Part Ii: Manual Of The Indiana Lane Merge Control System (2 Volumes), Andrzej P. Tarko, Sreenivasulu R. Kanipakapatnam, Jason S. Wasson Jan 1998

Wasson

JTRP Technical Reports

Severe traffic turbulence on entry sections of freeway work zones increases the delays and risk of crash. A new Indiana Department of Transportation system called Indiana Merge Lane System (IMLS) creates a dynamic no passing zone on the approach to the freeway work zone through the sequence of DO NOT PASS signs. The system is thought to encourage drivers to switch lanes well upstream of the discontinuous lane taper where the merging maneuver is safer and less intrusive. The IMLS is expected to impact drivers’ behavior, their perception of the traffic conditions, and traffic safety. This research is focused on: …
