Variable Camber Wings Using Compliant Mechanisms, Benjamin Moulton Dec 2019

Variable Camber Wings Using Compliant Mechanisms, Benjamin Moulton

Fall Student Research Symposium 2019

Wing morphing is the manipulation of a wing shape to influence aerodynamics. Wing morphing has significant aerodynamic advantages over traditional flaps, including increased efficiency and control. The USU Aerolab specializes in morphing aircraft and is currently working with the Air Force Research Lab on morphing straight wings [1-4].

The purpose of this project is to identify methods for applying morphing technologies to swept-wing aircraft. These methods are then used to create a morphing wing aircraft to demonstrate the efficiency and control of morphing flight with a swept wing.

Introduction To Production: Philosophies, Flow, And Analysis, Charles R. Standridge Dec 2019

Introduction To Production: Philosophies, Flow, And Analysis, Charles R. Standridge

Open Textbooks

Production is a fundamental societal and economic activity. Production has to do with the transformation of raw materials into useful objects and includes the knowledge to complete the transformation effectively. Thus, production is a board topic ranging from philosophies about how to approach production such as lean and quick response manufacturing, how to organize production facilities, how to analyze production operations, how to control the flow of materials during production, the devices used to move materials within a facility, and strategies for coordinating multiple production facilities.

An integrated introduction to production is presented in a set of learning modules. In …

Multi-Resonant Feedback Control Of Multiple Degree-Of-Freedom Wave Energy Converters, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Shangyan Zou, Rush D. Robinett Iii, David G. Wilson, Giorgio Bacelli, Ryan G. Coe, Umesh Korde Nov 2019

Multi-Resonant Feedback Control Of Multiple Degree-Of-Freedom Wave Energy Converters, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Shangyan Zou, Rush D. Robinett Iii, David G. Wilson, Giorgio Bacelli, Ryan G. Coe, Umesh Korde

Michigan Tech Patents

Multi-resonant control of a 3 degree-of-freedom (heave-pitch-surge) wave energy converter enables energy capture that can be in the order of three times the energy capture of a heave-only wave energy converter. The invention uses a time domain feedback control strategy that is optimal based on the criteria of complex conjugate control. The multi-resonant control can also be used to shift the harvested energy from one of the coupled modes to another, enabling the elimination of one of the actuators otherwise required in a 3 degree-of-freedom wave energy converter. This feedback control strategy does not require wave prediction; it only requires …

Electronic Data Capture And Study Management, William A. Mattingly Nov 2019

Electronic Data Capture And Study Management, William A. Mattingly

Division of Infectious Diseases

Electronic Data Capture (EDC) is the process of recording data from a primary data source into a computerized system for improved reliability, security, and convenience. Data stored in EDC systems are used for analysis and, in the case of clinical studies, are an important part of the development pipeline for new drugs and medical devices. This text provides an introduction to data capture and the management of a scientific study using the popular EDC solution REDCap.

Dear Neil Armstrong: Letters To The First Man From All Mankind, James R. Hansen Oct 2019

Dear Neil Armstrong: Letters To The First Man From All Mankind, James R. Hansen

Purdue University Press Book Previews

In the years between the historic first moon landing by Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969, and his death at age 82 on August 25, 2012, Neil Armstrong received hundreds of thousands of cards and letters from all over the world, congratulating him, praising him, requesting pictures and autographs, and asking him what must have seemed to him to be limitless—and occasionally intrusive—questions. Of course, all the famous astronauts received fan mail, but the sheer volume Armstrong had to deal with for more than four decades after his moon landing was staggering.

Today, the preponderance of those letters—some 75,000 of …

Multi-Resonant Feedback Control Of A Single Degree-Of-Freedom Wave Energy Converter, David G. Wilson, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Jiajun Song, Giorgio Bacelli Sep 2019

Multi-Resonant Feedback Control Of A Single Degree-Of-Freedom Wave Energy Converter, David G. Wilson, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Jiajun Song, Giorgio Bacelli

Michigan Tech Patents

A multi-resonant wide band controller decomposes the wave energy converter control problem into sub-problems; an independent single-frequency controller is used for each sub-problem. Thus, each sub-problem controller can be optimized independently. The feedback control enables actual time-domain realization of multi-frequency complex conjugate control. The feedback strategy requires only measurements of the buoy position and velocity. No knowledge of excitation force, wave measurements, nor wave prediction is needed. As an example, the feedback signal processing can be carried out using Fast Fourier Transform with Hanning windows and optimization of amplitudes and phases. Given that the output signal is decomposed into individual …

Model Predictive Control Of Parametric Excited Pitch-Surge Modes In Wave Energy Converters, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Shangyan Zou, David G. Wilson, Giorgio Bacelli, Umesh Korde, Ryan G. Coe Sep 2019

Model Predictive Control Of Parametric Excited Pitch-Surge Modes In Wave Energy Converters, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Shangyan Zou, David G. Wilson, Giorgio Bacelli, Umesh Korde, Ryan G. Coe

Michigan Tech Patents

A parametric excitation dynamic model is used for a three degrees-of-freedom (3-DOF) wave energy converter. Since the heave motion is uncoupled from the pitch and surge modes, the pitch-surge equations of motion can be treated as a linear time varying system, or a linear system with parametric excitation. In such case the parametric exciting frequency can be tuned to twice the natural frequency of the system for higher energy harvesting. A parametric excited 3-DOF wave energy converter can harvest more power, for both regular and irregular waves, compared to the linear 3-DOF. For example, in a Bretschneider wave, the harvested …

Problems, Solutions, And Opportunities For Engineers And Scientists, Mary K. Barillas, Stephen P. Fernandez

Open Educational Resources

In this module, students spend time reflecting on major problems facing society today (ex: poverty, hunger, health, education, clean water/sanitation, etc). They then compare their findings to the major societal challenges identified by the United Nations through the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the National Academy of Engineering - if the class is an engineering class - or the National Academy of Sciences - if the class is a science class. Finally, the students reflect on the major career paths for students graduating with engineering/science degrees and then, more specifically, for students graduates from their college and/or university (Rowan University College …
