Sensor Systems For Combustion Control, Aodhan Arias, Joshua Kyle Alba Wong, Joeny Zhen
Electrical Engineering
This project is the first iteration of a larger multi-year project working towards utilizing ammonia (NH3) as an alternative fuel. The purpose of this iteration is a proof of concept for the creation of a control loop that can measure oxygen levels in a system and control the flow rates of nitrogen and oxygen in order to maintain an ideal ratio metric flow to reduce the overall emissions of the system. It is the hope of this project that the concept can eventually be used to maximally reduce to the point of near complete elimination of NOx emissions …
Water Leak Detection System, Ryan T. Hanson
Water Leak Detection System, Ryan T. Hanson
Electrical Engineering
The water supply shortage has increased in recent years due to overpopulation, climate change and obsolete water facilities, where deteriorated pipes cause most of the water leaks. The problem is not the size of the leak, but the time it takes to detect it. This paper presents the implementation of a system installed in the hydraulic facilities of a residence, to detect water leaks. The system consists of a water sensor installed by a water reservoir of interest, a microprocessor to interpret the data and evaluate whether it is a water leak or not, an SMS alert message, and an …

SeeStar is an autonomous, underwater camera system for observing aquatic environments. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) developed SeeStar to provide a low cost solution for marine researchers wishing to observe underwater ecosystems over long durations. The system consists of completely open-source designs featuring only common, commercially available components. This means users may purchase the components and build the system themselves. While MBARI originally intended for the system to simply capture photo and video data, many customers have requested additional sensors to gather contextual data to complement the captured images. The latest generation, SeeStar III, features a sensor module, …
Light Sensing Automated Blinds, Andrew B. Hodges, Ryan C. Flick
Light Sensing Automated Blinds, Andrew B. Hodges, Ryan C. Flick
Electrical Engineering
This project is solving the problem of wasted energy within buildings and homes, because currently the lights turned on inside building do not utilize natural, ambient light from the sun. Rather than having unnecessary light from a light source, the automated light sensing smart blinds can sense the amount of light outside the window and in the room, and then adjust the angle of the blinds to save energy by utilizing the available outdoor light. This way, the light source will not be running at maximum power output while there is excess light coming through the window. This project aims …

Martin Kaliski is a typical pet owner. He currently houses both cats and a dog. In order to keep from having to constantly let his pets out in the middle of the night he has installed a pet door into his home. All was well and good until early one morning Martin woke up to the sound of his Pomeranian barking violently. He ran downstairs to see what the problem was. He not only found his dog standing there but also a wild raccoon. The raccoon had slipped into the house in the early morning and was rummaging through the …

The goal of this project is to create an accurate ocean color sensor that will communicate effectively with an iPhone. The device will take ocean color measurements at its current location and provide these measurements to the user for scientific study of the variability of ocean color across the globe. The data gathered by the device will also provide ground-truthing of satellite ocean color measurements.
Piezoelectric Powered Led Street Reflector, Collin Shane Douglass
Piezoelectric Powered Led Street Reflector, Collin Shane Douglass
Electrical Engineering
In many areas of Washington, it rains for a majority of the year. During rainy weather it becomes difficult to see street lanes and dividers, causing hazardous road conditions. The Piezoelectric Powered LED Street Reflector solves this problem. The PPL Street Reflector modifies a street reflector with LED lights. These lights help drivers clearly see where dividers and street lines are in non-ideal weather conditions, such as rain, fog, and snow. The PPL Street Reflector capabilities include harvesting energy through the Piezoelectric Effect, creating a self-sustaining device with minimal maintenance.

Iphone Breathalyzer: Point Oh Wait!, Gurpal Bhoot
Electrical Engineering
This final year project combines hardware and software components to create an alcohol breathalyzer that is compatible with the iPhone. The final design of the circuit and the iPhone application is original and combines multiple components to create the final product. Most of those components are seen in a simplified version of a breathalyzer, while the added components take care of the interface to the iPhone.
Protected Ir Input System, Kevin Ersoy
Protected Ir Input System, Kevin Ersoy
Electrical Engineering
The result of this project is a product that may be used to apply a digital input to a system without physically touching a device. The combination of a modulated IR signal and reflective technology produces this remote actuation. The signal emitter should produce the modulated IR light, and the receiver should continuously wait for this signal to be received. If the IR signal should encounter an obstruction causing reflection at the appropriate distance, it will be reflected directly into the receiving device. This project may be extended to include multiple duplicate systems in proximity by transmitting a modulated digital …
