Merging Creative Design And Cad Learning Activities In A Product Design Programme, Pearl O'Rourke, Colm O'Kane, Leslie Smith, Michael Ring

Conference Papers

Traditional learning and teaching methods for creativity differ from those used in a scientific context. Although the creative process can benefit from a certain level of prescription and structural constraint - with time allocated to research, problem definition, conceptualisation and idea development - flexibility and fluidity are necessary for creative innovation. In contrast, the more linear and rigid pedagogies associated with science and engineering education facilitate efficient learning of subjects such as those based on software packages, manufacturing and materials theory or mechanics. This paper describes the development of a project which aims to establish constructive links between the learning …

Do Middle Managers Contribute To Their Organisation's Strategy?, Tony Kealy Sep 2013

Do Middle Managers Contribute To Their Organisation's Strategy?, Tony Kealy

Conference Papers

This paper presents an empirical study on the contribution made by middle managers to the development of strategy in an organisation. The data was collected using semi-structured interviews with four managers in randomly-chosen companies. Two of the participant managers held senior management positions while the other two held middle manager positions. The data was analysed using a qualitative approach. Previous studies in this field were found to be wide and varied. An early study by Mintzberg (1978) found that strategy mainly forms from emergent influences at middle and lower levels of the organisation, as well as from deliberate influences emanating …

Small-Scale Wind Turbines: An Appraisal, Tony Kealy Sep 2013

Small-Scale Wind Turbines: An Appraisal, Tony Kealy

Conference Papers

This research seeks to evaluate the economic benefits to be gained by installing a small-scale wind turbine for a customer with a three-phase electrical supply requirement. The evidence for the claims made in this paper is obtained by using actual data obtained from the installed equipment over a three year period. The objective is to accurately appraise the financial investment using real data. There appears to be limited studies conducted into this type of research, possibly because the renewable energy sector is in the infancy stage in the host country, Ireland. There are some wind energy installations with financial appraisal …

Assessing The Benefits Of Compressed Air Energy Storage On The 2020 Irish Power System, Brendan Cleary, Aidan Duffy, Alan O'Connor, Michael Conlon, Vasilis Fthenakis

Conference Papers

Power systems have evolved as countries implement energy policies focusing on energy efficiency and increased share of renewable energy sources (RES). At the forefront is non-dispatchable generation such as wind and solar. Traditionally power systems were designed for fully dispatchable generating plant. However, these powers systems are under additional pressure due to the variable operational characteristics of RES. Consequently, capital investments in grid reinforcement, interconnection, additional gas generators and smart grid initiatives have been proposed and implemented. Moreover, an increased interest in energy storage technologies has evolved due to their various economic and operational benefits to power systems. Current compressed …

Solar Photovoltaic Water Pumping For Multiple Use Systems (Mus) In Nepal, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon Sep 2013

Solar Photovoltaic Water Pumping For Multiple Use Systems (Mus) In Nepal, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon

Conference Papers

This paper investigates the performance of five solar photovoltaic (PV) Multiple Use Systems (MUS) used for water pumping. The solar MUS’s provide water for drinking, cleaning and micro-irrigation for some of the poorest communities in Nepal. In the absence of data logging, the performance of each system is investigated based on a series of rules of thumb to determine the predicted, expected and estimated demand and supply of water to small rural communities. The systems are compared based on their technical and economic performance and how this relates to local environmental, physical and socioeconomic characteristics at each location.

The Equi-Biaxial Fatigue Characteristics Of Epdm Under True (Cauchy) Stress Control Conditions, Mark Johnson, Ray Ekins, Niall Murphy, Stephen Jerrams, John Hanley Jun 2013

The Equi-Biaxial Fatigue Characteristics Of Epdm Under True (Cauchy) Stress Control Conditions, Mark Johnson, Ray Ekins, Niall Murphy, Stephen Jerrams, John Hanley

Conference Papers

ABSTRACT: Strain amplitude control is most often employed when carrying out fatigue testing of rubber components. Often the design engineer requires fatigue test data that is based on load amplitude control. This is analogous to engineering or nominal stress amplitude control. This usually makes it easy to maintain the load within the specified test limits during extended testing. Values of true stress and strain can be obtained from this approach, but the magnitudes of the maximum true stresses in these tests increase with accumulated cycles, whereas the equivalent maximum engineering stress values remain constant. This is easily demonstrated in the …

Anatomical Loading On A Uwb Antenna For Shoe Toe Box, Domenico Gaetano, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann, C Brannigan, Louise Keating, Frances Horgan Jun 2013

Anatomical Loading On A Uwb Antenna For Shoe Toe Box, Domenico Gaetano, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann, C Brannigan, Louise Keating, Frances Horgan

Conference Papers

A UWB 6.0-8.5 GHz monopole antenna for mounting on the toebox area of footwear is designed using a detailed model of a running shoe and a foot-shaped phantom. Variation of anatomical features between individual people gives rise to different proximity and permittivity loads on the antenna. To take account of environment, the antenna design optimization considers different proximity distances for impact on the reflection coefficient and on the radiation efficiency.

Stress Distribution At The Bone-Cement Interface Changes During Kyphoplasty Rehabilitation, Philip Purcell, Stephen Tiernan, Fiona Mcevoy, Magdalena Tyndyk, Seamus Morris May 2013

Stress Distribution At The Bone-Cement Interface Changes During Kyphoplasty Rehabilitation, Philip Purcell, Stephen Tiernan, Fiona Mcevoy, Magdalena Tyndyk, Seamus Morris

Conference Papers

Balloon Kyphoplasty uses an inflatable bone tamp and cement augmentation to repair vertebral compression fractures. A recent clinical study observed a 78% re-collapse rate in patients showing a radiolucent phenomenon at the bone-cement interface following Kyphoplasty. Two experimental studies showed significant height loss following Balloon Kyphoplasty under cyclical loads. The present study investigates the alteration in load angle corresponding to this height loss and its effect on load transfer to the bone-cement interface. A validated finite element model of a human thoracolumbar spine was segmented into a single L1 vertebral body and modified to replicate bilateral Balloon Kyphoplasty. Cement was …

A Performance Analysis Of Ws-* (Soap) And Restful Web Services For Implementing Service And Resource Orientated Architectures, Philip Markey, Gary Clynch May 2013

A Performance Analysis Of Ws-* (Soap) And Restful Web Services For Implementing Service And Resource Orientated Architectures, Philip Markey, Gary Clynch

Conference Papers

The past number of years have seen the emergence of Service-Oriented Architectures as a dominant architecture for implementing enterprise scale distributed systems. Two main styles of SOA exist, namely SOAP based services and RESTful services. There has been much comment and debate on the pros and cons of each approach to implementing a SOA, a lot of which has surrounded the performance characterictcs of both approaches. In this paper, the authors presents the results of a performance analysis that was conducted on a set of test SOA scenarios implemented using both SOAP and RESTful approaches; in particular the caching capabilities …

Feedback Dynamics In The Academic And Industrial Environment, David Kennedy, Dermot Mcgarthy Mar 2013

Feedback Dynamics In The Academic And Industrial Environment, David Kennedy, Dermot Mcgarthy

Conference Papers

Feedback is essential in all companies, in society and in educational environments. We learn, improve and develop from it in our examinations, group work, work environment and relationships. Feedback however must be supported with good communications and be consistent. In the classroom environment this means providing feedback in a positive and supportive manner, and being consistent to all. Most if not all managers and leaders, including lecturers have not undertaken any form of training in feedback methods and therefore it is not translated effectively, causing stress or misguidance to students and colleagues. This paper highlights the importance of good feedback, …

Modification Of Luas Heating And Ventilation Systems To Reduce Energy Consumption, Eogan Sweeney, James Brunton Jan 2013

Modification Of Luas Heating And Ventilation Systems To Reduce Energy Consumption, Eogan Sweeney, James Brunton

Conference Papers

Luas is a state of the art light rail system operating in Dublin Ireland. Being electrically powered, energy is a major operating cost for Luas. One component of rolling stock identified by this research that consumes a disproportional amount of energy is that of the heating and ventilation systems. The heating and ventilation systems fitted to Luas vehicles consume as much as 60% of total vehicle power, and under certain conditions can consume more than that of the traction motors. This paper explores solutions to reducing the energy consumption of Luas heating and ventilation systems. The identified software modifications and …

Mathematical Self-Efficacy: Addressing The Declining Interest In Engineering Careers, Eileen Goold Jan 2013

Mathematical Self-Efficacy: Addressing The Declining Interest In Engineering Careers, Eileen Goold

Conference Papers

This paper presents the findings of a study investigating whether there is a relationship between students’ experiences with school mathematics and their choice of engineering as a career. The study was inspired by the observation that there is a lacuna in the scholarly literature concerning the nature of mathematics’ role, if any, as a significant cause of the declining number of students entering professional engineering courses. The population of interest in this study comprises professional engineers practising in Ireland. Engineers’ experiences of school mathematics, factors that contributed to their engagement with school mathematics and the impact of their feelings about …

The Effect Of Microstructure On The Dynamic Equi-Biaxial Fatigue Behaviour Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Yanfen Zhou, Stephen Jerrams, Tony Betts, Lin Chen Jan 2013

The Effect Of Microstructure On The Dynamic Equi-Biaxial Fatigue Behaviour Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Yanfen Zhou, Stephen Jerrams, Tony Betts, Lin Chen

Conference Papers

Dynamic equi-biaxial fatigue behaviour of isotropic and anisotropic magnetorheological elas-tomers (MREs) based on a silicone rubber matrix was investigated using the bubble inflation method. Con-stant engineering stress amplitude was used as the control mode and samples were fatigued over different stress ranges between 0.75MPa and 1.4MPa. S-N (Wöhler) curves showing plots of stress amplitude (σa) ver-sus cycles to failure (N) are presented. Stress-strain behaviour throughout the fatigue process is described. Elastic modulus (E*) was studied for the specific cycles measured. It was found that anisotropic MREs exhi-bited greater fatigue resistance than isotropic MREs for a given magnetic particle content. Stress …
