Thatcher, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kentucky's 5th district; he was also a member of the Isthmian Canal Commission and governor of the Canal Zone from 1909 to 1913 as well as general counsel for the Gorgas Memorial Institute of Tropical and Preventative Medicine, Inc. Thatcher discusses the history and significance of the canal, General Gorgas and General Sibert, the building of the canal, the French Attempt, and completion of the construction.
