Band-gap photoluminescence (PL) is used to establish the optical signature of a GaAs-Ga1-xAlxAs heterojunction in the extreme quantum limit. The temperature and field dependence of new PL structure maps a phase boundary which correlates with the electron liquid-solid transition.

Strong resonant-polaron-coupling phenomena in the magnetophotoluminescence (magneto-PL) spectra of modulation-doped quantum wells are reported. The polaron interactions arise between hole quasiparticles in otherwise filled electron Landau levels, and LO phonons of the quantum-well material. This type of many-body polaron-coupling phenomenon is expected to be a universal feature of the magneto-PL spectra of quantum wells with electron Fermi energy greater than the LO-phonon energy of the well material.

This paper presents a study that was conducted at Monash University College - Gippsland on the effect of a robot’s geometrical parameters on its dynamic performance. This research was undertaken in pursuit of an optimal dynamic performance of industrial robots. In this study an indicator was established to quantitatively measure the dynamic performance of a robot arm with respect to changes in the geometrical parameters. We discuss the interaction between two-level systems and the phonon field in noncrystalline dielectric solids, and we calculate the quantum transition matrix elements ofsuch an interaction. After studying the Boltzmann equation for phonon transport. we obtain the phonon distribution function. From a direct calculation of the heat current, and as a result of obtaining the thermal conductivity of non-crystalline dielectric solids, the P relation is obtained.

Disnibuted Manipulation Environment (DME), is a concept based on the overall modularity of a manufacturing system including actuation, sensing, control, computing hardware and software. The basic building block of DME is the Manipulation Module (MM). Each MM may consist of up to three units including processing the unit, actuating unit and sensory unit. The application of computer vision in industry has been increasing as greater use is made of flexible automation and robotics. Quality control and sorting can also be heavily dependent on artificial vision interfaced to an intelligent decision making system. Traditionally industrial tasks requiring computer vision are simplified to a 2-D problem in a plane. This permits the use of a single camera and hence reduces the complexity of the procedures of frame grabbing, image processing and decision making. This paper describes the observed and the predicted performance of a full-scale trial embankment built to failure on a soft Malaysian marine clay. Predictions of the subsoil deformation. the critical height of fill and the corresponding slip surface are made and subsequently compared to the field measurements. It is of importance to realize that all the predictions were made prior to the actual failure of the embankment.
