Extreme Learning Machine Based Prognostics Of Battery Life, Roozbeh Razavi-Far, Shiladitya Chakrabarti, Mehrdad Saif, Enrico Zio, Vasile Palade

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

This paper presents a prognostic scheme for estimating the remaining useful life of Lithium-ion batteries. The proposed scheme utilizes a prediction module that aims to obtain precise predictions for both short and long prediction horizons. The prediction module makes use of extreme learning machines for one-step and multi-step ahead predictions, using various prediction strategies, including iterative, direct and DirRec, which use the constant-current experimental capacity data for the estimation of the remaining useful life. The data-driven prognostic approach is highly dependent on the availability of high quantity of quality observations. Insufficient amount of available data can result in unsatisfactory prognostics. …

Simulating The Role Of Axial Flow In Stay Cable Vibrations Via A Perforated Wake Splitter Plate”, Asce Special Edition: Wind Engineering In Natural Hazards, Ran Wang, Shaohong Cheng, David S-K Ting Oct 2018

Simulating The Role Of Axial Flow In Stay Cable Vibrations Via A Perforated Wake Splitter Plate”, Asce Special Edition: Wind Engineering In Natural Hazards, Ran Wang, Shaohong Cheng, David S-K Ting

Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering Publications

Cable-stayed bridges have become progressively popular since 1955, mainly because of their modest requirement on ground anchorage condition, efficient use of structural material, higher stiffness, and economy compared to suspension bridges. The inclined and/or yawed orientation of bridge stay cables results in the formation of secondary axial flow on the leeward side of cable surface, which is believed to be one of the contributing factors exciting some unique wind-induced cable vibration phenomena. To clarify the role of axial flow in triggering aerodynamic instability of stay cables, a numerical study has been conducted to indirectly examine the axial flow effect via …

The inclined and/or yawed orientation of bridge stay cables results in the formation of secondary axial flow on the leeward side of cable surface, which is believed to be one of the contributing factors exciting some unique wind induced cable vibration phenomena. To clarify the role of axial flow in triggering aerodynamic instability of stay cables, a numerical study has been conducted to indirectly examine the axial flow effect via a perforated splitter plate placed along the central line of a circular cylinder wake. By manipulating the perforation ratio of the perforated plate at four different levels, the variation of …

Fan Performance Scaling With Inlet Distortions, J. J. Defoe, E. Etemadi, D. K. Hall Jun 2018

Fan Performance Scaling With Inlet Distortions, J. J. Defoe, E. Etemadi, D. K. Hall

Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering Publications

Applications such as boundary-layer-ingesting fans, and compressors in turboprop engines require continuous operation with distorted inflow. A low-speed axial fan with incompressible flow is studied in this paper. The objectives are to (1) identify the physical mechanisms which govern the fan response to inflow distortions and (2) determine how fan performance scales as the type and severity of inlet distortion varies at the design flow coefficient. A distributed source term approach to modeling the rotor and stator blade rows is used in numerical simulations in this paper. The model does not include viscous losses so that changes in diffusion factor …

Pricing Policies For A Dual-Channel Retailer With Cross-Channel Returns, Mohannad Hassan Radhi, Guoqing Zhang May 2018

Pricing Policies For A Dual-Channel Retailer With Cross-Channel Returns, Mohannad Hassan Radhi, Guoqing Zhang

Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering Publications

Many retailers are adopting a dual-channel retailing strategy (DCRS) in which products are offered through two channels: physical stores and online stores. Due to regulations or competitive measures, such a strategy allows customers who find a purchase unsatisfactory to obtain a full refund through a same-channel return or a cross-channel return. No papers have collectively studied the aforementioned types of customer returns in a dual-channel context. This paper studies optimal pricing policies for a centralized and decentralized dual-channel retailer (DCR) with same- and cross-channel returns. How dual-channel pricing behavior is impacted by customer preference and rates of customer returns is …

Dual-Channel Warehouse And Inventory Management With Stochastic Demand, Fawzat Alawneh, Guoqing Zhang Feb 2018

Dual-Channel Warehouse And Inventory Management With Stochastic Demand, Fawzat Alawneh, Guoqing Zhang

Mechanical, Automotive & Materials Engineering Publications

This study examines the inventory policy for the emerging dual-channel warehouse, which has a unique structure where the warehouse is divided into two areas: one for fulfilling online orders and the other for storing products and fulfilling offline orders. A multi-item inventory model was developed considering the warehouse capacity constraint, demand, and lead time uncertainty. Solution methods are provided for both uniform and normal distributions. Adopting the proposed inventory policy for a dual warehouse is cost effective and adds flexibility to the warehouse and supply chain. The study also offers managerial insights on some critical issues faced by companies operating …

Solution Deposition Of Conformal Gold Coatings On Knitted Fabric For E-Textiles And Electroluminescent Clothing, Tricia Carmichael, Yunyun Wu, Sara S. Mechael, Yiting Chen Jan 2018

Solution Deposition Of Conformal Gold Coatings On Knitted Fabric For E-Textiles And Electroluminescent Clothing, Tricia Carmichael, Yunyun Wu, Sara S. Mechael, Yiting Chen

Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications

The vision for wearable electronics involves creating an imperceptible boundary between humans and devices. Integrating electronic devices into clothing represents an important path to this vision; however, combining conductive materials with textiles is challenging due to the porous structure of knitted textiles. Stretchability depends on maintaining the void structure between the yarns of the fabric; filling these voids with conductive materials stiffens the textile and can lead to detrimental cracking. The authors demonstrate the solution-based metallization of a knitted textile that conformally coats individual fibers with gold, leaving the void structure intact. The resulting gold-coated textile is highly conductive, with …
