In this thesis we designed, prototyped, and constructed a printed circuit board for real-time, low size, weight, and power (SWaP) HDMI video processing and developed a general purpose library of image processing functions for FPGAs.

The printed circuit board is a baseboard for a Xilinx Zynq based system-on-module (SoM). The board provides power, HDMI input, and HDMI output to the SoM and enables low-SWaP, high-resolution, real-time video processing.

This work demonstrates and analyses a new flow candidate for describing the internal gaseous motion in simulated rocket motors. The fundamental features of this solution include the conservation of key system properties also incorporated in the classic Taylor-Culick (TC) system (i.e. inviscid, axisymmetric, steady and rotational properties), while allowing for the development of a swirling velocity component. The work compares the new solution to the development and formulation of the classic TC system, ultimately identifying that both the new and classic solutions are special cases of the Bragg-Hawthorne equation. However, this also means the nuclear forensic community has no actual debris from which to develop analytical methods for source attribution, making the development of surrogate nuclear debris a vital undertaking. The objective of this effort was to design and validate a Mach 3 wind tunnel nozzle contour. The nozzle will be used for an existing facility, replacing a Mach 2.3 nozzle. The nozzle contour was design using the widely-distributed CONTUR code developed by Sivells. The program uses a combination of analytical solutions and the method of characteristics in order to calculate a nozzle contour. A nozzle contour adhering to the existing geometry requirements was achieved through an iterative process. The flowfield of the finalized nozzle contour was solved using ANSYS fluent. The solution results were analyzed for flow uniformity.

The DJI S-1000 Spreading Wings octocopter rotor downwash slipstream area of influence was measured in axial climb conditions and in straight level flight. These data were gathered using a simple apparatus of distributed anemometers and a custom made boom affixed to the drone. Straight level flight tests incurred autopilot oscillations that rendered the data gathering and analysis challenging. The best quality data was acquired during the axial climb flight tests. Experiments done previously have shown that cancer cells have lower impedance than the normal cells, due to the thinner membrane of cancer cells. The aim of this work is to develop lignin carbon fiber for composite applications. This included mechanical testing of single lignin carbon fiber (LCF), interfacial shear strength determination for LCF-resin systems using single fiber fragmentation, x-ray diffraction for the evaluation of microstructural parameters, and finally composite manufacturing and testing. Through these focused areas of analysis, the carbon fiber is thoroughly characterized and composite performance is evaluated. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of ultrasonic transducers on heat transfer in a packed particle bed heat exchanger. Although substantial research has been devoted to ultrasound, and the associated improvements in heat transfer, data regarding the effects on packed particle beds is non-existent. This is of particular interest given the potential to improve heat transfer in a wide variety of packed particle bed systems. A prototype weight-based yield mapping system for seed corn production was developed at the University of Tennessee (UTK) and field tested in Iowa. The first chapter of the following study focuses on assessing the accuracy of this yield mapping system which employs a novel yield prediction and analysis software called Yield Analyzer. Yield Analyzer was designed using a rule-based system for producing yield maps with minimal user input by automatically determining acceptable ranges for known dependent variables that contribute to dynamic weight measurement errors.

Heat treating fluorochlorozirconate (FCZ) glasses nucleates nanocrystals in the glass matrix, resulting in a glass ceramic that has optical properties suitable for use as a medical imaging plate. As the temperature of heat treatment rises, the resulting FCZ glass-ceramic becomes increasingly more opaque as the size of the orthorhombic phase BaCl­2[barium chloride] nanocrystals grow within the glass matrix. This opaqueness negatively affects imaging. The effect of adding Fe3+[iron] on the valence state of zirconium and overall glass quality was investigated.

Hydraulic fracturing has allowed natural gas to become a viable energy source via extraction of unconventional shale reserves, but this process requires an enormous amount of water. To ensure a productive fracture, a proprietary blend of chemical additives is added to the water. In this research, a hydraulic fracturing chemical additive – an enzyme breaking agent – is analyzed for organic components using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. In this study, multiple models from Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Model Intercomparison Project (ACCMIP) are utilized to derive the global burden of disease of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer (LNC), and lower respiratory infection (LRI) derived from surface PM2.5 elevation. Various Representative Concentration Pathways and Shared Socio-economic Pathways scenarios are compared as well as various models to deduct the impact from various scenarios. The time series variation and seasonal variation are also illustrated in this study. Multi-model ensemble was conducted to reduce the deviation in model projection output.

In this thesis, we first develop an efficient automated classification algorithm for sleep stages identification. Polysomnography recordings (PSGs) from twenty subjects were used in this study and features were extracted from the time{frequency representation of the electroencephalography (EEG) signal. The classification of the extracted features was done using random forest classifier. The performance of the new approach is tested by evaluating the accuracy of each sleep stages and total accuracy. The results shows improvement in all five sleep stages compared to previous works.
