Climate change, understood as a statistically significant variation in the mean state of the climate or its variability, is the greatest environmental challenge of this generation (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2001). Marshfield is already being affected by changes in the climate that will have a profound effect on the town’s economy, public health, coastal resources, natural features, water systems, and public and private infrastructure. Adaptation strategies have been widely recognized as playing an important role in improving a community’s ability to respond to climate stressors by resisting damage and recovering quickly.

Quasiparticle band structures and optical properties of MoS2, MoSe2, MoTe2, WS2, and WSe2 monolayers are studied using the GW approximation in conjunction with the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). The inclusion of two-particle excitations in the BSE approach reveals the presence of two strongly bound excitons (A and B) below the quasiparticle absorption onset arising from vertical transitions between a spin-orbit-split valence band and the conduction band at the K point of the Brillouin zone. The transition energies for monolayer MoS2, in particular, are shown to be in excellent agreement with available absorption and photoluminescence measurements. The anaerobic side stream reactor (ASSR) process was continuously operated and tested as a pilot scale system, treating 500 gallons of raw wastewater per day. Addition of an ASSR to a conventional activated sludge (CAS) system has been shown to reduce overall waste sludge generation in previous bench scale experiments. This study aimed to specifically test the feasibility of the ASSR process at the pilot scale while comparing it to a full scale CAS plant. The focus of this research was to determine the performance of different types of media for a post-filter second-stage contactor for the removal of manganese from a drinking water source. The Aquarion Water Company’s Lantern Hill (LH) water treatment facility in Stonington, CT served as the motivation for this study. The groundwater at this site contains significant concentrations of manganese, averaging 0.2 mg/L, as well as iron, 2.3 mg/L, and total organic carbon (TOC), 3.5 mg/L. Although TaOx memristors have demonstrated encouraging write/erase endurance and nanosecond switching speeds, the linear current-voltage (I-V) characteristic in the low resistance state limits their applications in large passive crossbar arrays. We demonstrate here that a TiO2-x/TaOx oxide heterostructure incorporated into a 50 nm× 50 nm memristor displays a very large nonlinearity such that I(V/2) ≈ I(V)/100 for V ≈ 1 volt, which is caused by current-controlled negative differential resistance in the device.

This research characterizes different wastewater treatment plant effluent nitrogen species in order to further understand the organic fraction of effluent nitrogen. Four effluents from biological nutrient removal (BNR) treatment and conventional activated sludge (CAS) treatment processes were investigated. Proteomic tools were applied in characterizing effluent protein. The protein profiles show the presence of active enzymes in all effluents and the organic nitrogen in the BNR effluent is more diverse than that in the CAS effluent, especially in the size range of 50-75 kDa. Size fractionation of the effluents suggests that over 70% of the effluent protein is soluble and most …

We developed empirical remote sensing models to estimate chlorophyll a concentrations and cyanobacteria synoptically, over a large inland lake using available Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data. In contrast to previous studies which rely on the spectral characteristics of the cyanobacterial specific pigment, phycocyanin, we developed remote sensing models capable of directly detecting cyanobacterial biovolume. This distinction is important because Landsat ETM+ data lacks the spectral band information required for optimal phycocyanin detection. Each model was calibrated and cross-validated with existing in situ measurements from Lake Champlain’s Long-Term Water Quality and Biological Monitoring Program (LTMP). Disproportionate collapse analysis aims to assure that frames, a commonstructural system of buildings, can survive unforeseen local events and a central modelingtool of such abnormal deterioration is the concept of column loss. This paperformulates an appropriate computational model on the basis of mathematical optimization,using the collapse load analysis problem of steel frames with pre-existingdamage. A respective collapse load robustness measure is proposed. The model hasthe ability to consider both full and partial column/node removals. However, one key challenge that has received limited attention is the interfacing of unconventional/self-assembly based approaches with conventional CMOS manufacturing to build integrated systems.

The radar is seasonally deployed aboard one of the two National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WP-3D Orion ``Hurricane Hunter'' aircraft based out of MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida. Because the fuel tax is no longer viewed as a sustainable and stable option, other financing alternatives are being considered. One such alternative includes the vehicle miles traveled (VMT) fee. The horizontal shear strength of the interface between prestressed concrete hollow core slabs and cast-in-place concrete topping slabs was evaluated through a set of 24 push-off experiments. The push-off test specimens featured segments of dry-mix and wet-mix hollow core slabs with a variety of surface treatments including machine finished, sandblasted, broom roughened, rake roughened and grouted. A cast-in-place slab was poured on top of the hollow core specimens to form a 15 inch by 15 inch interface between the two materials. Modern lower limb prostheses are devices that replace missing limbs, making it possible for lower limb amputees to walk again. Most commercially available prosthetic limbs lack intelligence and passive adaptive capabilities, and none available can adapt on a step by step basis. Often, amputees experience a loss of terrain adaptability as well as stability, leaving the amputee with a severely altered gait. This work is focused on the development of a semi-active damping system for use in intelligent terrain adaptive ankle prostheses.
