The problem of energy scarcity has hit a global scale because of the dependency of most of the energy generation on non-renewable sources (e.g., fossil fuels). As in supply and demand laws, the lower the amount of energy provided, the more expensive it becomes, causing a major problem for the industry in general, which is dependent on it. These non-renewable energy sources contribute to environmental degradation effects and depletion of the ozone layer from the atmosphere. To reduce this effect, the use of renewable energy sources which is environmentally friendly has been on the growing index across the globe.

As construction projects became larger and more complex the need to control their costs became greater. As a result, cost control professions such as the cost manager and the quantity surveyor emerged. Cost control mechanisms have evolved with changes in the construction sectors. It is now apparent that the output of the construction sector plays an important part in the economic stability and growth of both national and international economies. Recently a coalition was formed to produce an international construction measurement standard (ICMS). All member organisations of the ICMS have pledged to mandate the standard amongst their membership and seek …

The Building Control (Amendment) Regulations of 2014 has sought to leave the days of self-regulation in the past. However, the opt-out clause has created a two-tiered regulatory structure that questions if the regulations are fit for purpose?

This presentation takes an in depth look at the current regulatory structure and questions if there is a requirement for the introduction of a top-down Local Authority lead approach to Building Regulation Control, similar to that currently utilised throughout the UK and Northern Ireland in respect of all building projects?

Industrial Relations And The Construction Sector: The Implications Of Mcgowan And Ors V The Labour Court, Ruairi Hayden

Other Resources

On the 9th May 2013 the Supreme Court in McGowan and Ors v The Labour Court and Ors found Registered Employment Agreements to be incompatible with the Constitution. Registered Employment Agreements (REA) are provided for in Part III of the Industrial Relations Act 1946. Collective bargaining has traditionally been the method for employees and employers to negotiate terms of employment within the construction industry. These agreements would then be registered with the Labour Court and they would have legal effect. Registered Employment Agreements are particularly suited to the construction industry due to the labour intensive nature of the industry …

Settlement Selection: A Critical Consideration For A New National Spatial Strategy Plan: Applying Population And Daytime Working Population Data To A Centrality Spreadsheet Model To Inform And Evidence Base For Gateway And Hub Selection., Brian Hughes

Other Resources

This Dissertation examines both Central Statistics Office (CSO) published and unpublished demographic evidence from the 2011 and previous censuses, so as to evaluate the 2002 National Spatial Strategy’s (NSS) selection of Gateways and Hub settlements. On its own, population is an incomplete measure of size. However, when used with emerging employment data, a robust methodological time-dynamic centrality model may be constructed based on population and Daytime Working Population (DWP) behaviour and other related and relevant investigations. The Model compares unpublished 2002 data of the NSS Plan with similar 2011 census for all large and medium-sized Irish settlements of 5,000 and …

Making An Impact On Vertebral Compression Fractures, Philip Purcell, Stephen Tiernan, Fiona Mcevoy, Magdalena Tyndyk, Seamus Morris

Other Resources

Spinal fractures constitute one of the most prevalent injuries to the human skeletal system with approximately 1.4 million fractures per annum worldwide. Treatments for these injuries have evolved from simple bed rest through to the intricacy of modern minimally invasive surgery. Balloon kyphoplasty is one such treatment that uses a balloon to decompress collapsed vertebra, followed by injection of bone cement to stabilise the fracture. Recent research has correlated a ‘halo’ feature on kyphoplasty patient x-rays with a 78% re-collapse rate. The present work documents a new method of mechanical analysis to evaluate balloon kyphoplasty and explores alterations to current …

Other Resources

Balloon Kyphoplasty uses an inflatable bone tamp and cement augmentation to repair vertebral compression fractures. A recent clinical study observed a 78% re-collapse rate in patients showing a radiolucent phenomenon at the bone-cement interface following Kyphoplasty. Two experimental studies showed significant height loss following Balloon Kyphoplasty under cyclical loads. The present study investigates the alteration in load angle corresponding to this height loss and its effect on load transfer to the bone-cement interface. A validated finite element model of a human thoracolumbar spine was segmented into a single L1 vertebral body and modified to replicate bilateral Balloon Kyphoplasty. Cement was …

An Investigation Of Block Searching Algorithms For Video Frame Codecs, Jerome Casey Jan 2008

An Investigation Of Block Searching Algorithms For Video Frame Codecs, Jerome Casey

Other Resources

Block matching is the most computationally demanding aspect of the video encoding process. In many applications real-time video encoding is desired and therefore it is important that the encoding is fast. Also where handheld devices such as a PDA or mobile phone are concerned a less computationally intensive algorithm means a simpler processor can be used which saves on hardware costs and also extends battery life. An optimised algorithm also allows these devices to be used in low bandwidth wireless networks. The challenge is to decrease the computational load on the system without compromising the quality of the video stream …

Development Of Cfd Algorithms For Transient And Steady Aerodynamics, Fergal Boyle [Thesis] Dec 1999

Development Of Cfd Algorithms For Transient And Steady Aerodynamics, Fergal Boyle [Thesis]

Other Resources

Research carried out in the United States and in Europe over the last 20 years has led to the development of the advanced propeller, a small-diameter, highly-loaded, multi-bladed, swept, variable-pitch propeller, that can achieve potential fuel savings of 30% over an equivalent technology turbofan engine at competitive speed and altitudes.

In this work an implicit finite-volume algorithm is developed for predicting the transient flow around an advanced propeller under asymmetric inflow conditions. The development of the unsteady propeller algorithm evolves from a family of methods for progressively more complex applications. In total six algorithms are developed: three steady and three …
