Today’s vehicles are no longer stand-alone transportation means, due to the advancements on vehicle-tovehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications enabled to access the Internet via recent technologies in mobile communications, including WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G, and even 5G networks. The Internet of vehicles was aimed toward sustainable developments in transportation by enhancing safety and efficiency. The sensor-enabled intelligent automation of vehicles’ mechanical operations enhances safety in on-road traveling, and cooperative traffic information sharing in vehicular networks improves traveling efficiency.

This paper is the first of a two-part paper presenting a multiperiod generalized network flow model of the integrated energy system in the United States. Part I describes the modeling approach used to evaluate the economic efficiencies of the system-wide energy flows, from the coal and natural gas suppliers to the electric load centers. Under the proposed problem formulation, fuel supply and electricity demand nodes are connected via a transportation network, and the model is solved for the most efficient allocation of quantities and corresponding prices. In this paper we address the problem of pre-positioning emergency supplies prior to a disaster onset. The goal is to ensure a fast and effective response when the disaster strikes. Pre-positioning of emergency supplies is a strategic decision aimed at determining the number and location of local distribution centers as well as their inventory levels for emergency supplies. These decisions must be made in a highly disruption-prone environment where a timely response is vital and resources are scarce. We present and discuss a scenario-based model that integrates location, inventory and routing decisions.

Portable bright light units, the Boeing Alertness Model (BAM) and Jeppessen Crew Alert application have been introduced in a field study with long haul pilots and cabin crew in ground breaking research – which may lead to improvements in aviation safety through the development of new preventive alertness strategies. Western Michigan University, Novair Airlines, Nature Bright, Jeppesen Crew Alert and leading sleep scientists collaborated to examine whether timed blue light integrated with the Boeing Alertness Model will improve alertness, and mitigate cognitive fatigue. Sharing research data and scholarship is of national importance due to the increased focus on maximizing return on the government’s investment in research programs. Recent policy changes have directly affected the management and accessibility of publically-funded research. On January 18, 2011 the National Science Foundation (NSF) required data management plans to be submitted with all grant proposals. On February 22, 2013, the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the President of the United States extended a similar requirement to all federal agencies with research and development budgets of more than $100 million. The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) annually invests approximately $180 million in State Planning and Research (SPR) and University Transportation Centers (UTC). This investment generates an extensive portfolio of “grey literature” that is not yet uniformly cataloged or accessible, despite the best efforts of the National Technical Information Service, the Transportation Research Board, and the National Transportation Library. An experimental program was established to investigate boundaries in low-velocity slug-flow pneumatic conveying. A straight horizontal pipeline of L=21m and D=60.3mm ID was set up for actual conveying trials and a simple rig was designed and built specifically to simulate the boundaries of slug-flow. After running several tests in the simulation rig with a sample of the product, the slug-flow were able to be determined with good accuracy. Combined with the theoretical correlations developed to determine pressure drop in slug-flow, reliable operating conditions can be predicted.
