This study investigated the removal of trace organic contaminants by a combined membrane bioreactor - granular activated carbon (MBR-GAC) system over a period of 196 days. Of the 22 compounds investigated here, all six hydrophilic compounds with electron-withdrawing functional groups (i.e., metronidazole, carbamazepine, ketoprofen, naproxen, fenoprop and diclofenac) exhibited very low removal efficiency by MBR-only treatment. GAC post-treatment initially complemented MBR treatment very well; however, a compound-specific gradual deterioration of the removal of the above-mentioned problematic compounds was noted. While a 20% breakthrough of all four negatively charged compounds namely ketoprofen, naproxen, fenoprop and diclofenac occurred within 1000-3000 bed volumes …

Titanium-bearing burdens are commonly introduced into blast furnaces to protect the hearlh because the so-called "titanium bear" which is a precipitate of carbide, nitride and carbonitride of titanium may form in the blast furnace hearth if Ti02 is present in the feed [1 , 2J. This paper presents a laboratory study of interface behavior between ballast and geogrid under various degree of fouling by coal fines. The stress-displacement behaviour of fresh and fouled ballast with geogrid was investigated through a series of large-scale direct shear tests where the fouling degree varied from 0% to 95% Void Contamination Index (VCI), at normal stresses ranging from 15kPa to 75kPa. The results showed that geogrid enhances the shear strength and increases apparent angle of shearing resistance, while only slightly reduces the vertical displacement of the composite geogrid-ballast system. In this paper, cyclic triaxial loading tests were conducted on specimens of soft clay with varying cyclic stresses and frequencies to investigate the performance of soft soil subgrade subjected to cyclic loading. The laboratory results indicate that given the same level of cyclic stress, the stability of clay subgrade is primarily dependent on the loading time with no consistent frequency/train speed effect. There exists a critical level of cyclic stress between 60 and 80% of the monotonic shear strength, above which failure may occur regardless of the loading frequency. This paper presents the three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) that was used to study the shear behaviour of fresh and coal fouled ballast in direct shear testing. The volumetric changes and stress-strain behaviour of fresh and fouled ballast were simulated and compared with the experimental results. 'Clump logic' in Particle Flow Code (PFC3D) incorporated in a MATLAB Code was used to simulate irregular shaped particles in which groups of ten to twenty spherical balls were clumped together in appropriate sizes to simulate ballast particles. The electromagnetic (EM) medium plays a key role in many areas, such as communications, stealth technology, etc. Different EM properties are required for different applications. In this paper, we have obtained tunable EM properties in an Al2O3-Fe composite via selective reduction. By adjusting the content of one functional component, the composite shows totally different EM properties, in accordance with the predictions of effective medium theory. Hybrid EM behaviour is obtained near the percolation threshold, which has a close relationship with its microstructure.

MnNiGa2 crystallizes in the L21 (Heusler) structure and has a ferromagnetic ordering temperature TC ∼ 192 K. Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction patterns indicates that the Ga atoms occupy the equivalent 8c position, while Mn and Ni share the 4a (0, 0, 0) and 4b (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) sites with a mixed occupancy of Mn and Ni atoms. It is found that that ∼83% of Mn and ∼17% Ni are located at the 4a site while ∼83% of Ni and ∼17% Mn occupy the 4b site. There is no evidence of a magneto-volume effect around TC. Different types of superconductors have been investigated at small magnetic fields (Ba) over wide temperature (T) ranges at different Ba orientations. It has been shown that the temperature dependence of the characteristic field (B*), separating the Ba-independent critical current density (Jc) plateau (single vortex pinning regime) and the region with Jc(Ba) (collective pinning), can be attributed either to the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth for Nb-film and MgB2bulk superconductors, or to thermally activated processes for Bi-based superconductors and YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconducting films. Perovskite solid solution ceramics with compositions of 0.9Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3–0.1PbTiO3, 0.6Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.4PbTiO3, and 0.6Pb(Co1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.4PbTiO3 were synthesized by the traditional solid state reaction method. Ferroelectric measurements revealed that these samples have well saturated polarization-electrical field loops. Dielectric measurements showed that abnormal dielectric peaks at their Curie temperature were frequency dependent. Both characteristics indicate that these samples are relaxor type ferroelectric materials. Field cooled and zero field cooled magnetization measurements revealed that the 0.6Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.4PbTiO3 and 0.6Pb(Co1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.4PbTiO3 samples are paramagnetic down to 5 K, while the 0.9Pb(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3–0.1PbTiO3 sample shows an antiferromagnetic-like ordering starting from around 40 K. In this study, the continuous cooling phase transformation behaviour of a quenched and tempered armour steel was investigated. A continuous cooling transformation diagram was constructed providing valuable information for predicting microstructural evolution and mechanical properties at different cooling rates during actual welding fabrication. Welding trials were carried out utilising flux-cored arc welding technique in combination with an austenitic stainless steel consumable. The effect of various preheat and interpass temperatures on cooling rate and consequently on the heat affected zone microstructure and mechanical properties of multipass welds were investigated.

The phase inversion technique was used to produce polyaniline (PAn) actuators with different geometries that cannot be obtained by PAn cast from N -methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) solution in a conventional way. PAn was cast and coagulated in a water bath forming films and tubes with or without a platinum (Pt) wire helix as an interconnect. PAn was doped with hydrochloric solution (HCl, 1 M) (PAn/HCl) or methanesulfonic acid (MSA, 1 M) (PAn/MSA). The development and recent advancements of integrated inertial sensors has afforded substantive new possibilities for the acquisition and study of complex human motor skills and ultimately their imitation within robotic systems. This paper describes continuing work on kinetic models that are derived through unsupervised learning from a continuous stream of signals, including Euler angles and accelerations in three spatial dimensions, acquired from motions of a human arm. A novel plane strain approach is introduced to model the behaviour of embankment foundations on soft clay stabilised with vertical drains, where the classical axisymmetric solutions are converted to an equivalent plane strain model, incorporating the effects of smear and well resistance.
