Background: Blue-gray ovoids (B-GOs), a critical dermoscopic structure for basal cell carcinoma (BCC), offer an opportunity for automatic detection of BCC. Due to variation in size and color, B-GOs can be easily mistaken for similar structures in benign lesions. Analysis of these structures could afford accurate characterization and automatic recognition of B-GOs, furthering the goal of automatic BCC detection. This study utilizes a novel segmentation method to discriminate B-GOs from their benign mimics.
Methods: Contact dermoscopy images of 68 confirmed BCCs with B-GOs were obtained. Another set of 131 contact dermoscopic images of benign lesions possessing B-GO mimics provided a …

LIght Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) scanning can be used to safely and remotely provide intelligence on the interior of dangerous structures for use by first responders that need to enter these structures. By scanning into structures through windows and other openings or moving the LIDAR scanning into the structure, in both cases carried by a remote controlled robotic crawler, the presence of dangerous items or personnel can be confi rmed or denied. Entry and egress pathways can be determined in advance, and potential hiding/ambush locations identifi ed. This paper describes an integrated system of a robotic crawler and LIDAR scanner. …

An operational tool for integrating a photovoltaic system into the utility's generation mix is introduced. The development and implementation of a new approach-a dynamic rule-based (RB) dispatch algorithm-is presented. A Box-Jenkins time-series method is used to model the subhourly solar irradiance. The model is extended to yield forecast parameters which are then used to predict the photovoltaic output expected to occur at certain lead times coinciding with the economic dispatch intervals. The RB dispatch algorithm is introduced to operate as either a substitute for or an aid to the dispatch operator. It is concluded that results depend on the time …
