Research outputs 2022 to 2026

It is well known that the mechanical properties of Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.3Si are closely related to its microstructure and texture. In this work, a novel treatment of electroshocking treatment (EST) was adopted to optimize the microstructure and improve the mechanical properties of this titanium alloy. The grain orientation, texture, and mechanical properties of Ti-6.5Al-3.5Mo-1.5Zr-0.3Si alloy under EST were characterized and analyzed. With the increase of EST time to 0.04 s, the resultant acicular secondary αs shows a tendency of spheroidization and the increase in grain diameter, which leads to a little decrease in hardness and yield strength. The increase in EST time …

Microstructure Evolution And Mechanical Property Response Of Tc11 Titanium Alloy Under Electroshock Treatment, Chang Liu, Lechun Xie, Dongsheng Qian, Lin Hua, Liqiang Wang, Lai-Chang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

© 2020 The Authors This work investigated the effects of electroshock treatment (EST) on the microstructure variation and mechanical properties of TC11 alloy. The average hardness of the specimens decreased from 358 HV to 328 HV after EST of 0.04 s, then increased to 396 HV after EST of 0.06 s. After EST, the yield strength of specimen declined from 959 MPa to 797 MPa after EST of 0.04 s, and then increased to 1265 MPa after EST of 0.06 s, but the fracture strain decreased continuously. The variation in mechanical properties was closely related to the phase transition from …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In comparison with face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) metals and alloys, hexagonal close-packed (HCP) metals and alloys show distinct characteristics, such as atomic site occupation, anisotropic microstructure, and fewer slip systems, owing to their HCP lattice structure. Therefore, HCP metals and alloys have distinguished processing, microstructure, and properties. Several types of HCP metals and alloys, involving titanium, zirconium, magnesium, and so on, are extensively used in a variety of industrial and military sectors. Up to date, an increased requirement is still needed to improve the understanding of the relationships among processing, microstructures, and the resultant properties of HCP …

Design, Microstructure And Properties Of Metastable Beta-Type Biomedical Titanium Alloys, Syed Faraz Jawed Jan 2020

Design, Microstructure And Properties Of Metastable Beta-Type Biomedical Titanium Alloys, Syed Faraz Jawed

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Many existing implant biomaterials including cobalt-chromium alloy, stainless steel, Ti-6Al-4V and commercially pure titanium have all been shown to demonstrate mechanical incompatibility, poor osseointegration and/or cause cytotoxic effects on the human body after some years of application, leading to revision surgery in most cases. Consequently, there is an immediate need for an enduring biomaterial that displays good mechanical properties and possesses biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, in order to reduce rates of revision surgeries. In this PhD work, based on the 𝐵𝑜̅̅̅̅-𝑀𝑑̅̅̅̅̅, 𝑒/𝑎̅̅̅̅̅-𝛥𝑟̅̅̅ and BF-d-electron superelastic theoretical relationships four new series of quaternary Ti-25Nb-8Zr-xCr, Ti-25Nb-xSn-yCr, Ti26Nb-xMn-yZr and Ti-25Nb-xMn-ySn alloys have been …

Deformation And Strength Characteristics Of Laves Phases In Titanium Alloys, Chirag D. Rabadia, Y. J. Liu, Liang-Yu Chen, Syed F. Jawed, L. Q. Wang, Hongqi Sun, Laichang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The superior reinforcement nature of Laves phases make them suitable for high-strength applications. Therefore, investigations on the deformation and strength characteristics of Laves phases are useful in development of an improved Laves phase-reinforced alloy. In this work, the Vickers micro-indentation method is used to evaluate and compare the deformation and strength characteristics of a hexagonal close-packed Laves phase (C14-type) in Ti-35Zr-5Fe-6Mn (wt%) and a face-centered cubic Laves phase (C15-type) in Ti-33Zr-7Fe-4Cr (wt%), considering the same volume fraction of Laves phase (~7.0%) in these alloys. Moreover, the effects of higher volume fraction of Laves phase (19.4%) on indentation-based deformation features are …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Laves phase alloys are promising materials for several structural applications, but the extreme brittleness is the predominant shortcoming of a Laves matrix. One potential solution to overcome this shortcoming is to alloy Laves matrix with some soft matrix. A group of Ti-35Zr-5Fe-xMn (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 wt%) alloys was cast with an aim to improve deformation in Laves alloy compositions. The phase and microstructure analyses reveal dual phase matrices, including a β phase and a C14 type Laves phase in the investigated alloys. The mechanical properties such as yield strength, hardness and plastic strain for the investigated …

Microstructure, Texture Evolution And Mechanical Properties Of Vt3-1 Titanium Alloy Processed By Multi-Pass Drawing And Subsequent Isothermal Annealing, Xiaofei Lei, Limin Dong, Zhiaqiang Zhang, Yujing Liu, Yulin Hao, Rui Yang, Laichang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Microstructure, texture evolution, and mechanical properties of Ti–6Al–1.5Cr–2.5Mo–0.5Fe–0.3Si (VT3-1) titanium alloy processed by multi-pass drawing and subsequent isothermal annealing were systematically investigated. A fiber-like microstructure is formed after warm drawing at 760 °C with 60% area reduction. After isothermal annealing, the samples deformed to different amounts of area reduction show a similar volume fraction (80%) of α phase, while the sample deformed to 60% exhibits a homogeneous microstructure with a larger grain size (5.8 μm). The major texture component of α phase developed during warm drawing is centered at a position of {φ1 = 10°, φ = 65°, φ …

Influence Of Nb On The Β → Α″ Martensitic Phase Transformation And Properties Of The Newly Designed Ti-Fe-Nb Alloys, Shima Ehtemam-Haghighi, Yujing Liu, Guanghui Cao, Lai-Chang Zhang Jan 2016

Influence Of Nb On The Β → Α″ Martensitic Phase Transformation And Properties Of The Newly Designed Ti-Fe-Nb Alloys, Shima Ehtemam-Haghighi, Yujing Liu, Guanghui Cao, Lai-Chang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

A series of Ti-7Fe-xNb (x = 0, 1, 4, 6, 9, 11 wt.%) alloys was designed and cast to investigate the β → α″ martensitic phase transformation, β phase stability, the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties. Phase analysis revealed that only Ti-7Fe-11Nb alloy shows a single body-centred cubic β phase microstructure while the others are comprised of β and orthorhombic α″ phases. Moreover, Nb addition up to 11 wt.% enhances the stability and volume fraction of β phase in the microstructure, hence reducing the propensity of the alloy system to form α″ phase during quenching. Compressive yield strength and hardness …
