A Novel Approach For The Preparation Of Nanosized Gd2o3 Structure: The Influence Of Surface Force On The Morphology Of Ball Milled Particles, Ly B. T. La, Yee-Kwong Leong, Harry P. Watts, Pek-Ing Watts, Kevin Hayward, Laichang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This work investigates the effect of inter-particle forces arising from adsorbed typical cationic and anionic surfactants on the morphology of ball milled gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3). The experimental outcomes are interpreted in terms of stabilization and interaction mechanisms of fine washed Gd2O3 particles (size diameter <1 μm) in aqueous medium under the variation of surface forces arising of adsorbed surfactant. After ball milling and washing, the point of zero charge or isoelectric point (IEP) of Gd2O3 particles suspension is at pH 11 where its maximum yield stress is observed. Because of hydrophobic interaction, the maximum yield stress increases by 30 times by adsorbed sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and its IEP shifts slightly to a lower pH. By cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), …

Technical Feasibility Analysis Of Utilizing Special Purpose Machine Tools, Ana Vafadar, Majid Tolouei Rad, Kevin Hayward, Kazem Abhary Jan 2016

Technical Feasibility Analysis Of Utilizing Special Purpose Machine Tools, Ana Vafadar, Majid Tolouei Rad, Kevin Hayward, Kazem Abhary

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Special purpose machine tools (SPMs) are primarily used for performing drilling-related operations and are widely used in mass production including automotive component manufacturing. Utilization of SPM is considerably widespread; however, this technology is relatively new and expensive. The important problems facing manufacturing industries wishing to utilize this technology is feasibility analysis to decide whether a SPM can be utilised for production of the given part and if it is feasible which SPM components would be appropriate. Since the cost of utilizing SPM is high, feasibility analysis must be performed before any investment on detailed design. This paper proposes a technical …

Ultra-Sustainable Fe78si9b13 Metallic Glass As A Catalyst For Activation Of Persulfate On Methylene Blue Degradation Under Uv-Vis Light, Zhe Jia, Xiaoguang Duan, Wenchang Zhang, Weimin Wang, Hongqi Sun, Shaobin Wang, Laichang Zhang Jan 2016

Ultra-Sustainable Fe78si9b13 Metallic Glass As A Catalyst For Activation Of Persulfate On Methylene Blue Degradation Under Uv-Vis Light, Zhe Jia, Xiaoguang Duan, Wenchang Zhang, Weimin Wang, Hongqi Sun, Shaobin Wang, Laichang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Stability and reusability are important characteristics of advanced catalysts for wastewater treatment. In this work, for the first time, sulfate radicals (SO4∙−) with a high oxidative potential (Eo = 2.5–3.1 V) were successfully activated from persulfate by a Fe78Si9B13 metallic glass. This alloy exhibited a superior surface stability and reusability while activating persulfate as indicated by it being used for 30 times while maintaining an acceptable methylene blue (MB) degradation rate. The produced SiO2 layer on the ribbon surface expanded strongly from the fresh use to the 20th use, providing stable protection of the buried Fe. MB degradation and kinetic …

X-Ray Protection, Surface Chemistry And Rheology Of Ball-Milled Submicron Gd2o3 Aqueous Suspension, Ly B. T. La, Yee-Kwong Leong, Christopher Leatherday, Pek I. Au, Kevin Hayward, Laichang Zhang Jan 2016

X-Ray Protection, Surface Chemistry And Rheology Of Ball-Milled Submicron Gd2o3 Aqueous Suspension, Ly B. T. La, Yee-Kwong Leong, Christopher Leatherday, Pek I. Au, Kevin Hayward, Laichang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

X-ray protective garments are typically comprised of lead-based materials, which are toxic to both people and the environment. Developing alternative lightweight radiation shielding materials is a priority for protecting people working with radiation. Gadolinium, with an electron configuration typical of radiation shielding elements, is proposed as a non-toxic replacement for lead. This study provides new insights into the potential for a gadolinium suspension for replacing lead and proposes an inexpensive and effective preparation method. Submicron gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) was generated using a cost effective ball milling method involving addition of NaCl. Then, the dispersed-flocculated behaviour of …

The Heat Treatment Analysis Of E110 Case Hardening Steel, Majid Tolouei Rad, Eric Lichter Jan 2016

The Heat Treatment Analysis Of E110 Case Hardening Steel, Majid Tolouei Rad, Eric Lichter

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper investigates mechanical and microstructural behaviour of E110 case hardening steel when subjected to different heat treatment processes includingquenching, normalizing and tempering. After heat treatment samples were subjected to mechanical and metallographic analysisand the properties obtained from applying different processes were analysed. The heat treatment process had certain effects on the resultant properties andmicrostructures obtained for E110 steel which are described in details. Quenching produced a martensitic microstructure characterized by significant increase in material’s hardness and a significant decreased in its impact energy. Annealed specimens produced a coarse pearlitic microstructure with minimal variation in hardness and impact energy. For …

Influence Of Nb On The Β → Α″ Martensitic Phase Transformation And Properties Of The Newly Designed Ti-Fe-Nb Alloys, Shima Ehtemam-Haghighi, Yujing Liu, Guanghui Cao, Lai-Chang Zhang Jan 2016

Influence Of Nb On The Β → Α″ Martensitic Phase Transformation And Properties Of The Newly Designed Ti-Fe-Nb Alloys, Shima Ehtemam-Haghighi, Yujing Liu, Guanghui Cao, Lai-Chang Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

A series of Ti-7Fe-xNb (x = 0, 1, 4, 6, 9, 11 wt.%) alloys was designed and cast to investigate the β → α″ martensitic phase transformation, β phase stability, the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties. Phase analysis revealed that only Ti-7Fe-11Nb alloy shows a single body-centred cubic β phase microstructure while the others are comprised of β and orthorhombic α″ phases. Moreover, Nb addition up to 11 wt.% enhances the stability and volume fraction of β phase in the microstructure, hence reducing the propensity of the alloy system to form α″ phase during quenching. Compressive yield strength and hardness …
