Towards Load-Bearing Biomedical Titanium-Based Alloys: From Essential Requirements To Future Developments, Yu-Wei Cui, Liqiang Wang, Lai-Chang Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The use of biomedical metallic materials in research and clinical applications has been an important focus and a significant area of interest, primarily owing to their role in enhancing human health and extending human lifespan. This article, particularly on titanium-based alloys, explores exceptional properties that can address bone health issues amid the growing challenges posed by an aging population. Although stainless steel, magnesium-based alloys, cobalt-based alloys, and other metallic materials are commonly employed in medical applications, limitations such as toxic elements, high elastic modulus, and rapid degradation rates limit their widespread biomedical applications. Therefore, titanium-based alloys have emerged as top-performing …

Understanding Melt Pool Characteristics In Laser Powder Bed Fusion: An Overview Of Single- And Multi-Track Melt Pools For Process Optimization, Jincheng Wang, Rui Zhu, Yujing Liu, Laichang Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has made significant progress in producing solid and porous metal parts with complex shapes and geometries. However, LPBF produced parts often have defects (e.g., porosity, residual stress, and incomplete melting) that hinder its large-scale industrial commercialization. The LPBF process involves complex heat transfer and fluid flow, and the melt pool is a critical component of the process. The melt pool stability is a critical factor in determining the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of LPBF produced metal parts. Furthermore, optimizing process parameters for new materials and designed structures is challenging due to the complexity …

A Review Of The Mechanical Properties Of 17-4ph Stainless Steel Produced By Bound Powder Extrusion, Jaidyn Jones, Ana Vafadar, Reza Hashemi Oct 2023

A Review Of The Mechanical Properties Of 17-4ph Stainless Steel Produced By Bound Powder Extrusion, Jaidyn Jones, Ana Vafadar, Reza Hashemi

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

17-4PH Stainless Steel is a mechanically high-performing alloy that is widely used across chemical and mechanical processing industries. The alloy is conventionally fabricated by cast methods, but emerging additive manufacturing techniques are presently offering an economic, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative. Bound Powder Extrusion (BPE) is a relatively new additive manufacturing technique that is used to fabricate three-dimensional, free-form components. Investigation into the mechanical properties and behavior of 17-4PH stainless steel fabricated by BPE is vital to understanding whether this technique proposes a competitive substitute to the cast alloy within industry. Published literature has investigated the as-fabricated mechanical properties, microstructure, …

Effect Of 3d Printing Parameters On The Fatigue Properties Of Parts Manufactured By Fused Filament Fabrication: A Review, Hamed Bakhtiari, Muhammad Aamir, Majid Tolouei-Rad

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The advancement in 3D printing techniques has raised the hope to use additively manufactured parts as final products in various industries. However, due to the layer-by-layer nature of AM parts, they are highly susceptible to failure when they are subjected to fatigue loading. This review provides a detailed account of the influence of 3D printing parameters on the fatigue properties of parts manufactured by fused filament fabrication (FFF). Existing standards for fatigue testing of polymers and their limitation for 3D-printed parts are discussed. In addition, the cyclic behaviour of polymers is reviewed, and the impact of 3D printing parameters on …

Influence Of Three-Dimensional Printing Parameters On Compressive Properties And Surface Smoothness Of Polylactic Acid Specimens, Hamed Bakhtiari, Mostafa Nikzad, Majid Tolouei-Rad Jan 2023

Influence Of Three-Dimensional Printing Parameters On Compressive Properties And Surface Smoothness Of Polylactic Acid Specimens, Hamed Bakhtiari, Mostafa Nikzad, Majid Tolouei-Rad

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

While the mechanical performance of fused filament fabrication (FFF) parts has been extensively studied in terms of the tensile and bending strength, limited research accounts for their compressive performance. This study investigates the effect of four process parameters (layer height, extrusion width, nozzle temperature, and printing speed) on the compressive properties and surface smoothness of FFF parts made of Polylactic Acid (PLA). The orthogonal Taguchi method was employed for designing the experiments. The surface roughness and compressive properties of the specimens were then measured and optimized using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). A microscopic analysis was also performed to identify …
