Substrate Concentration Influences Effective Radial Diffusion Coefficient In Canine Cortical Bone, Kurt Farrell, Daniel O’Conor, Mariela Gonzalez, Caroline Androjna, Ronald J. Midura, Surendra N. Tewari, Joanne M. Belovich

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Transport of nutrients and waste across osseous tissue is dependent on the dynamic micro and macrostructure of the tissue; however little quantitative data exists examining how this transport occurs across the entire tissue. Here we investigate in vitro radial diffusion across a section of canine tissue, at dimensions of several hundred microns to millimeters, specifically between several osteons connected through a porous microstructure of Volkmann's canals and canaliculi. The effective diffusion coefficient is measured by a "sample immersion" technique presented here, in which the tissue sample was immersed in solution for 18-30 h, image analysis software was used to quantify …

Adaptive Control Of An Active Magnetic Bearing With External Disturbance, Lili Dong, Silu You Sep 2014

Adaptive Control Of An Active Magnetic Bearing With External Disturbance, Lili Dong, Silu You

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Adaptive back stepping control (ABC) is originally applied to a linearized model of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) system. Our control goal is to regulate the deviation of the magnetic bearing from its equilibrium position in the presence of an external disturbance and system uncertainties. Two types of ABC methods are developed on the AMB system. One is based on full state feedback, for which displacement, velocity, and current states are assumed available. The other one is adaptive observer based back stepping controller (AOBC) where only displacement output is measurable. An observer is designed for AOBC to estimate velocity and …

Modified Active Disturbance Rejection Control For Time-Delay Systems, Shen Zhao, Zhiqiang Gao Jul 2014

Modified Active Disturbance Rejection Control For Time-Delay Systems, Shen Zhao, Zhiqiang Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Industrial processes are typically nonlinear, time-varying and uncertain, to which active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) has been shown to be an effective solution. The control design becomes even more challenging in the presence of time delay. In this paper, a novel modification of ADRC is proposed so that good disturbance rejection is achieved while maintaining system stability. The proposed design is shown to be more effective than the standard ADRC design for time-delay systems and is also a unified solution for stable, critical stable and unstable systems with time delay. Simulation and test results show the effectiveness and practicality of …

On The Centrality Of Disturbance Rejection In Automatic Control, Zhiqiang Gao Jul 2014

On The Centrality Of Disturbance Rejection In Automatic Control, Zhiqiang Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, it is shown that the problem of automatic control is, in essence, that of disturbance rejection, with the notion of disturbance generalized to symbolize the uncertainties, both internal and external to the plant. A novel, unifying concept of disturbance rejector is proposed to compliment the traditional notion of controller. The new controller-rejector pair is shown to be a powerful organizing principle in the realm of automatic control, leading to a Copernican moment where the model-centric design philosophy is replaced by the one that is control-centric in the following sense: the controller is designed for a canonical model …

Numerical Evaluation Of Paris-Regime Crack Growth Rate Based On Plastically Dissipated Energy, Parag G. Nittur, Anette M. Karlsson, Leif A. Carlsson Jul 2014

Numerical Evaluation Of Paris-Regime Crack Growth Rate Based On Plastically Dissipated Energy, Parag G. Nittur, Anette M. Karlsson, Leif A. Carlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The crack growth rate during cyclic loading is investigated via numerical simulations. The crack advancement is governed by a propagation criterion that relates the increment in plastically dissipated energy ahead of the crack tip to a critical value. Once this critical value is satisfied, crack propagation is modeled via a node release scheme. Thus, the crack growth rate is an output from the numerical simulation. The crack growth rate predicted by the proposed scheme is compared with published experimental crack growth data in the Paris-regime for selected metals. A good match is found between the experimentally observed crack growth rates …

Real-Time Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Shoulder Girdle And Arm Dynamics, Edward K. Chadwick, Dimitra Blana, Robert F. Kirsch, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Jul 2014

Real-Time Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Shoulder Girdle And Arm Dynamics, Edward K. Chadwick, Dimitra Blana, Robert F. Kirsch, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Electrical stimulation is a promising technology for the restoration of arm function in paralyzed individuals. Control of the paralyzed arm under electrical stimulation, however, is a challenging problem that requires advanced controllers and command interfaces for the user. A real-time model describing the complex dynamics of the arm would allow user-in-the-loop type experiments where the command interface and controller could be assessed. Real-time models of the arm previously described have not included the ability tomodel the independently controlled scapula and clavicle, limiting their utility for clinical applications of this nature. The goal of this study therefore was to evaluate the …

Relationship Between Jump Landing Kinematics And Peak Acl Force During A Jump In Downhill Skiing: A Simulation Study, D. Heinrich, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, W. Nachbauer

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Recent data highlight that competitive skiers face a high risk of injuries especially during off-balance jump landing maneuvers in downhill skiing. The purpose of the present study was to develop a musculo-skeletal modeling and simulation approach to investigate the cause-and-effect relationship between a perturbed landing position, i.e., joint angles and trunk orientation, and the peak force in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during jump landing. A two-dimensional musculo-skeletal model was developed and a baseline simulation was obtained reproducing measurement data of a reference landing movement. Based on the baseline simulation, a series of perturbed landing simulations (n=1000) was generated. Multiple …

M-Ary Energy Detection Of A Gaussian Fsk Uwb System, Song Cui, Fuqin Xiong May 2014

M-Ary Energy Detection Of A Gaussian Fsk Uwb System, Song Cui, Fuqin Xiong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The energy detection M-ary Gaussian frequency-shift keying (FSK) system is proposed in this paper. The system performance is analyzed in additive white Gaussian noise channels, multipath channels, and in the presence of synchronization errors. The numerical results show that the M-ary modulation achieves the higher data rate than the binary modulation. However, it also results in performance degradation.

Energy Detection Uwb System Based On Pulse Width Modulation, Song Cui, Fuqin Xiong May 2014

Energy Detection Uwb System Based On Pulse Width Modulation, Song Cui, Fuqin Xiong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A new energy detection ultra-wideband system based on pulse width modulation is proposed. The bit error rate (BER) performance of this new system is slightly worst than that of a pulse position modulation (PPM) system in additive white Gaussian noise channels. In multipath channels, this system does not suffer from cross-modulation interference as PPM, so it can achieve better BER performance than PPM when cross-modulation interference occurs. In addition, when synchronisation errors occur, this system is more robust than PPM.

Linearized Biogeography-Based Optimization With Re-Initialization And Local Search, Dan Simon, Mahamed G. H. Omran, Maurice Clerc May 2014

Linearized Biogeography-Based Optimization With Re-Initialization And Local Search, Dan Simon, Mahamed G. H. Omran, Maurice Clerc

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is an evolutionary optimization algorithm that uses migration to share information among candidate solutions. One limitation of BBO is that it changes only one independent variable at a time in each candidate solution. In this paper, a linearized version of BBO, called LBBO, is proposed to reduce rotational variance. The proposed method is combined with periodic re-initialization and local search operators to obtain an algorithm for global optimization in a continuous search space. Experiments have been conducted on 45 benchmarks from the 2005 and 2011 Congress on Evolutionary Computation, and LBBO performance is compared with the results …

Evaluation Of An Inclined Gravity Settler For Microalgae Harvesting, Zhaowei Wang, Jing Hou, Dustin Bowden, Joanne M. Belovich May 2014

Evaluation Of An Inclined Gravity Settler For Microalgae Harvesting, Zhaowei Wang, Jing Hou, Dustin Bowden, Joanne M. Belovich

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND Given the small size of microalgae, and the low biomass concentrations obtained in light-limited cultures, the cost of algae harvesting is a significant barrier to commercial-scale production of biofuel from algae. A downward- flow inclined gravity settler was evaluated for its effectiveness in dewatering the microalgae Scenedesmus dimorphus and Chlorella vulgaris. RESULTS Experimental results showed that S. dimorphus can be concentrated up to 8-fold using a single settler stage, with a biomass recovery of 80%. Separation efficiency was independent of biomass concentration between 1 and 5 gdw L-1, suggesting that a two-stage sequential system of settlers may maximize biomass …

Multi-Muscle Fes Force Control Of The Human Arm For Arbitrary Goals, Eric M. Schearer, Yu-Wei Liao, Eric J. Perreault, Matthew C. Tresch, William D. Memberg, Robert F. Kirsch, Kevin M. Lynch May 2014

Multi-Muscle Fes Force Control Of The Human Arm For Arbitrary Goals, Eric M. Schearer, Yu-Wei Liao, Eric J. Perreault, Matthew C. Tresch, William D. Memberg, Robert F. Kirsch, Kevin M. Lynch

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a method for controlling a neuroprosthesis for a paralyzed human arm using functional electrical stimulation (FES) and characterize the errors of the controller. The subject has surgically implanted electrodes for stimulating muscles in her shoulder and arm. Using input/output data, a model mapping muscle stimulations to isometric endpoint forces measured at the subject’s hand was identified. We inverted the model of this redundant and coupled multiple-input multiple-output system by minimizing muscle activations and used this inverse for feedforward control. The magnitude of the total root mean square error over a grid in the volume of achievable isometric endpoint …

Mediator-Less Immunodetection With Voltage-Controlled Intrinsic Amplification For Ultrasensitive And Rapid Detection Of Microorganism Pathogens, Jiapeng Wang, Yan Xu, Siu-Tung Yau Apr 2014

Mediator-Less Immunodetection With Voltage-Controlled Intrinsic Amplification For Ultrasensitive And Rapid Detection Of Microorganism Pathogens, Jiapeng Wang, Yan Xu, Siu-Tung Yau

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A mediator-less immunodetection method for microorganisms is realized by incorporating the newly developed field-effect enzymatic detection (FEED) technique with the conventional electrochemical immunosensing approach. The gating voltage of FEED facilitates the transduction of electrical signal through the bulky immune complex so that the detection does not rely on the use of mediators or other diffusional substances. The voltage-controlled intrinsic amplification provided by the detection system allows detection in low-concentration samples without target pre-enrichment, leading to ultrasensitive and rapid detection. The detection approach is demonstrated with E. coliO157:H7, a model microorganism, in milk with an estimated detection limit of 20 CFU …

Hybrid Biogeography-Based Evolutionary Algorithms, Haiping Ma, Dan Simon, Minrui Fei, Xinzhan Shu, Zixiang Chen Apr 2014

Hybrid Biogeography-Based Evolutionary Algorithms, Haiping Ma, Dan Simon, Minrui Fei, Xinzhan Shu, Zixiang Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Hybrid evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are effective optimization methods that combine multiple EAs. We propose several hybrid EAs by combining some recently-developed EAs with a biogeography-based hybridization strategy. We test our hybrid EAs on the continuous optimization benchmarks from the 2013 Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) and on some real-world traveling salesman problems. The new hybrid EAs include two approaches to hybridization: (1) iteration-level hybridization, in which various EAs and BBO are executed in sequence; and (2) algorithm-level hybridization, which runs various EAs independently and then exchanges information between them using ideas from biogeography. Our empirical study shows that the new …

Enzyme Attached On Polymeric Micelles As A Nanoscale Reactor, Moo-Yeal Lee, Kyung-Jin Hong, Seung Pil Han, Toshio Kajiuchi Feb 2014

Enzyme Attached On Polymeric Micelles As A Nanoscale Reactor, Moo-Yeal Lee, Kyung-Jin Hong, Seung Pil Han, Toshio Kajiuchi

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Similar to what lipase does, a surface-active enzyme was developed by attaching peroxidase on combshaped polymaleic anhydride-alt-1-tetradecene (PMA-TD) in a microemulsion system composed of n-butyl acetate and buffer solution, and its catalytic characteristics of polyphenol synthesis were investigated in an aqueous solution. The modified peroxidase with PMA-TD tended to form self-assembled aggregates like micelles in the aqueous solution and could be concentrated at solvent/water interfaces without unfolding of the enzyme. The efficiency of conversion of 2,4-dichlorophenol to phenolic oligomers was approximately 2-fold improved with the modified peroxidase compared to native peroxidase. The K m and V max values …

Expressing The Joint Moments Of Drop Jumps And Sidestep Cutting In Different Reference Frames – Does It Matter?, Eirik Kristianslunda, Tron Krosshauga, Kam-Ming Mok, Scott Mclean, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Jan 2014

Expressing The Joint Moments Of Drop Jumps And Sidestep Cutting In Different Reference Frames – Does It Matter?, Eirik Kristianslunda, Tron Krosshauga, Kam-Ming Mok, Scott Mclean, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Joint moments help us understand joint loading and muscle function during movement. However, the interpretation depends on the choice of reference frame, but the different reference frames have not been compared in dynamic, high-impact sporting movements. We have compared the magnitude and the resulting ranking of hip and knee joint moments expressed in the laboratory coordinate system, the local system of the distal segment and projected or decomposed to the Joint Coordinate System (JCS) axes. Hip and knee joint moments of drop jumps and sidestep cutting in 70 elite female handball players were calculated based on recordings from an eight-camera …

Numerical Evaluation Of The Extended Endplate Moment Connection Subjected To Cyclic Loading, Mehdi Ghassemieh, Mehdi Jalalpour, Ali Akbar Gholampour Jan 2014

Numerical Evaluation Of The Extended Endplate Moment Connection Subjected To Cyclic Loading, Mehdi Ghassemieh, Mehdi Jalalpour, Ali Akbar Gholampour

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, the seismic behaviour of extended endplate moment connection is analysed using finite element method (FEM). First, an existing test setup is modelled and analysed using ANSYS computer program. The model is validated by comparing the results from the finite element with the experimental ones. Afterwards, by changing the dimensions of members of the connection, their effect on the overall seismic performance of connection is investigated. The results show that by enlarging the column depth and stiffening the connection, the seismic performance is improved and the thickness of endplate should be chosen in a way that its moment …

Dynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Generalized Power Flow Controller, B. Vyakaranam, F. E. Villaseca Jan 2014

Dynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Generalized Power Flow Controller, B. Vyakaranam, F. E. Villaseca

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a unified solution to compute power quality indices in the generalized unified power flow controller (GUPFC) during steady and transient conditions using a dynamic harmonic domain technique. This technique allows the user to analyze harmonics generated in the GUPFC more precisely than using time domain techniques. The derivation of a model is presented and then simulated in the presence of voltage disturbances to demonstrate its use in power quality assessment. The results of the proposed model are validated against time domain simulations.

Semiactive Virtual Control Method For Robots With Regenerative Energy-Storing Joints, Hanz Richter, Daniel J. Simon, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Jan 2014

Semiactive Virtual Control Method For Robots With Regenerative Energy-Storing Joints, Hanz Richter, Daniel J. Simon, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A framework for modeling and control is introduced for robotic manipulators with a number of energetically self-contained semiactive joints. The control approach consists of three steps. First, a virtual control design is conducted by any suitable means, assuming a fully-actuated system. Then, virtual control inputs are matched by a parameter modulation law. Finally, the storage dynamics are shaped using design parameters. Storage dynamics coincide with the system's internal dynamics under exact virtual control matching. An internal energy balance equation and associated self-powered operation condition are given for the semiactive joints. This condition is a structural characteristic of the system and …

Low Cost Adsorbents For Sustainable Dye Containing-Wastewater Treatment, Siew Teng Ong, Pei Sin Keng, Siew Ling Lee, Yung Tse Hung Jan 2014

Low Cost Adsorbents For Sustainable Dye Containing-Wastewater Treatment, Siew Teng Ong, Pei Sin Keng, Siew Ling Lee, Yung Tse Hung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Dyes are coloured substances that can be applied to various substrates such as textile materials, leather, paper and hair. The usage of dyes has continuously increased in many industries but the removal of this pollutant remains as a problematic issue as they are generally stable to light and oxidizing agents and are resistant to aerobic digestion. This literature review paper provides and lists several low cost adsorbents to serve as an alternative method for dye removal. Adsorption using low cost materials can be viewed as a sustainable treatment process because most of these materials are of naturally occurring, locally available …

Time-Dependent Mechanical Behavior Of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Electrodes, Zongwen Lu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson, F. Colin Busby, Peter Walsh Jan 2014

Time-Dependent Mechanical Behavior Of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Electrodes, Zongwen Lu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson, F. Colin Busby, Peter Walsh

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The electrodes used for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) are typically painted or sprayed onto the membrane during manufacturing, making it difficult to directly characterize their mechanical behavior as a stand-alone material. An experimental-numerical hybrid technique is devised to extract the electrode properties from the experimentally measured properties of Nafion® 211 membrane1 and a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) based on Nafion® 211 membrane at various temperatures, humidities, and strain rates. Within the linear regime, the rule-of-mixtures assuming an iso-strain condition is used to calculate the rate-dependent Young's modulus of the electrodes. Beyond the linear regime, reverse …
