Tourniquet Pressure Gradient Measurement Apparatus, Luis Enrique Perez, Elsa Elizabeth Bates
Tourniquet Pressure Gradient Measurement Apparatus, Luis Enrique Perez, Elsa Elizabeth Bates
Biomedical Engineering
The goal of this project was to design a device that would measure pressure gradient data across the width of an elastic and inelastic tourniquet cuff using a human limb model. The main customer requirements that were focused on were to accurately measure the pressure from a tourniquet, keep the cost down, and be easy to use. The targeted design specifications were to read pressure values ranging from 0-400 mmHg, keep the test length under 5 minutes, and to keep the cost of materials under $400. The design of the device ended up consisting of 5 IV pouches that were …

This Final Design Review documents the senior design project carried out by a team of Mechanical Engineering students attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo for Roger Benham, and his company Leak Control Services Inc. The requirement was to design, build, and validate the performance of a test fixture that quantifies the performance characteristics of flow rate and pressure drop of different pitot tube designs to be used in a chemical dispensing application for Mr. Benham. This document includes relevant background research on the need for the fixture as well as relevant technical research. This document also contains objectives …

Mechanical Engineering
Properties such as nutrients, DNA, pH levels, and primary productivity are difficult to measure onboard an Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (UROV) as mobile submarine sensors are highly expensive and conventional water capture devices are too large to be equipped. However, these properties provide an integral view into our oceans, the species that inhabit them, and our influence on the environment. Collected samples of seawater taken back to labs allow researchers to see a clearer picture of ecosystems’ inhabitants and lifecycle with the analysis of Environmental DNA (eDNA) among many other properties. The scope of this project is to design a …

EMS personal work hard every day to save lives. A big part of the job is helping to lift people who are notinjured but have fallen and can’t get up by themselves. There are currently no procedures or tools that areconsistently used by EMS in this specific situation. This leads to the response often being ad hoc costing more time, resources, and manpower that can be vital if multiple emergencies happen at the same time. Along with this the job of lifting an individual that is overweight is no easy feat and is one of the primary factors that leads …
Thermal Vacuum Chamber Refurbishment And Analysis, Adrian Michael Williams
Thermal Vacuum Chamber Refurbishment And Analysis, Adrian Michael Williams
Master's Theses
Spacecraft are subject to different environments while on orbit around the Earth and beyond. One of the most critical of these environments that must be counteracted is the thermal environment. Each spacecraft has an operating temperature that is specified in the mission requirements. The requirement stems from internal component operating temperatures that are critical to mission success. Prior to placing the spacecraft in orbit, engineers must be sure that the spacecraft will survive or risk losing the mission entirely.
The primary way to mitigate this risk is to use a thermal vacuum chamber (TVAC). The chamber is designed to resemble …

Computer Science and Software Engineering
Fluids are a part of everyday life, yet are one of the hardest elements to properly render in computer graphics. Water is the most obvious entity when thinking of what a fluid simulation can achieve (and it is indeed the focus of this project), but many other aspects of nature, like fog, clouds, and particle effects. Real-time graphics like video games employ many heuristics to approximate these effects, but large-scale renderers aim to simulate these effects as closely as possible.
In this project, I wish to achieve effects of the latter nature. Using the Eulerian technique of discrete grids, I …

STAR Program Research Presentations
This study explores the relationship between chemical surface treatments on the interior of glass tubes and their resistance to fluid flow. By treating the interior of the tubes with functional silanes we can decrease or increase the interaction of the tube walls with the fluid column, which translates to changes in fluid column height for a given pressure differential. Resistance to fluid flow is quantified by using the tubes as integral parts of a barometric pressure column and measuring the changes in column height as the fluid is pulled into the tube by a set pressure differential. The barometric pressure …
Low-Pressure Testing: Pressure Regulating Valves, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Feist
Low-Pressure Testing: Pressure Regulating Valves, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Feist
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
ITRC tested performance characteristics of pressure regulating valves from a variety of manufacturers. The purpose of the testing was to evaluate the ability of different models of valves to regulate the pressure in a low-pressure system. The testing concentrated on three specific valve performance characteristics: minimal variance from the target downstream pressure caused by changes in flow rate or inlet pressure; minimal hysteresis in outlet pressures; minimal pressure loss (at low inlet pressures) across the valve.
Low-Pressure Testing: Microirrigation Emitters, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Feist
Low-Pressure Testing: Microirrigation Emitters, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Feist
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
ITRC tested 28 different pressure-compensating (PC) models of microirrigation emitting devices from a total of nine manufacturers in order to compare independent laboratory testing with manufacturer specifications. It is the intention of this report to investigate the ability of currently marketed products to operate in a truly low pressure irrigation system where energy inputs, in the form of pump discharge requirements, can be minimized.
Pressure Regulating Valve Pilot Characteristics - 2-Way Vs. 3-Way Pilots, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Feist
Pressure Regulating Valve Pilot Characteristics - 2-Way Vs. 3-Way Pilots, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Feist
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Pressure regulation valves, with 3” – 6” diameters, are commonly found at the entrance to agricultural irrigation blocks and manifolds. These valves are typical of a “hydraulic” design, in which a chamber above a flexible disc/diaphragm is filled or emptied. As the chamber is filled or emptied, the irrigation water passes through a smaller or larger orifice, and the pressure downstream of the valve is lowered, increased, or maintained at a constant target pressure. The flow in/out of the chamber is controlled by a small “pilot valve”. The characteristics of these pilot valves are discussed here, in general terms. Of …
Low Pressure Drip/Micro System Design – Analysis Of Potential Rebate, Charles M. Burt, Daniel J. Howes
Low Pressure Drip/Micro System Design – Analysis Of Potential Rebate, Charles M. Burt, Daniel J. Howes
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Drip/micro irrigation systems are often referred to as “low pressure” systems because the required emitter pressures are relatively low (6-12 psi). However, the pump discharge pressures of systems on flat ground throughout California average 40 psi. This report examines readily attainable system losses by examining individual components of the drip/micro system.

Measurement And Analysis Of Temperature And Pressure In High Altitude Air Shipments, Sher Paul Singh, Jay Singh, J. Stallings, Gary J. Burgess, K. Saha
Industrial Technology and Packaging
This study was performed (at the request of the FAA) to measure temperature and pressure conditions observed by standard packages in the FedEx Next Day Air network and the environmental conditions of passenger aircrafts. To measure the single parcel environment, two destinations known to be served by non-pressurized feeder and pressurized aircrafts in the USA, San Luis Obispo, California, and Twin Falls, Idaho, were used to represent higher altitude paths. Test packages (0.30 × 0.30 × 0.30 m) containing one MadgeTech PRTemp110 recorder were shipped Priority Overnight by FedEx from East Lansing, Michigan. For 6 weeks, two test packages were …
