Investigating The Effect Of Bead Geometry On Fiber Orientation And Thermomechanical Properties For Large-Format Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing, Joanna F. Keaton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In large-format extrusion-based additive manufacturing of polymer composites, the relationship between material properties and processing parameters requires further investigation. This thesis focuses on the relationship between fiber orientation and thermomechanical properties for short fiber-filled thermoplastic polymer systems manufactured by extrusion-based additive manufacturing. Fiber orientation is particularly important in determining the thermomechanical properties of the composite material as properties in the direction of deposition are expected to be higher for highly aligned fibers than randomly aligned fibers. Fiber orientation distribution, which is related to processing parameters and deposition conditions, can be efficiently represented by the orientation tensor. The orientation tensor can …

This work aims to improve our understanding of the strength and fracture behavior of spruce-pine-fir (south) (SPFs), particularly in cross-grain direction. This study’s primary goal is to examine the relationship between crack propagation and cross grain morphology under the following loading configurations: compact tension, compression, and rolling shear. The …

Anthropogenic Effects On Tidal Distortion In A Tidal River, Matthew D. Fischer Dec 2022

Anthropogenic Effects On Tidal Distortion In A Tidal River, Matthew D. Fischer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tidal rivers are landward portions of estuarine systems constituting the union between coastal, tidally controlled settings and rivers, where fluvial processes dominate. In these reaches, river discharge (mean flow) and tides are the two most important mechanisms in controlling geophysical flows. The processes governing water levels and current amplitudes in tidal rivers are highly nonlinear and modulated by external forcings- thus requiring sophisticated techniques for accurate prediction and forecasting. Physical oceanographers and estuarine physicists tend to limit their study area to the maximum extent of the horizontal tide (salinity intrusion), not the most landward point influenced by tidal water levels. …

Optimization Of A Lightweight Floating Offshore Wind Turbine With Water-Ballast Motion Mitigation Technology, William Ramsay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Floating offshore wind turbines are a promising technology to address energy needs utilizing wind resources offshore. The current state of the art is based on heavy, expensive platforms to survive the ocean environment. Typical design techniques do not involve optimization because of the computationally expensive time-domain solvers used to model motions and loads in the ocean environment. However, this project uses an efficient frequency domain solver with a genetic algorithm to rapidly optimize the design of a novel floating wind turbine concept. The concept utilizes liquid ballast mass to mitigate motions on a lightweight post-tensioned concrete platform, with a target …

Development Of Ultra High Performance Composite Impact Panels Using Emaa, Jeffrey Hollstein Aug 2022

Development Of Ultra High Performance Composite Impact Panels Using Emaa, Jeffrey Hollstein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

UHPC with the addition of fibers is recognized for its increased impact resistance compared to typical strength concrete. To further increase the resilience, recent studies have been conducted to reinforce the UHPC with CFRTP on the front and rear face to create sandwich panels. These studies used PETg/E-glass CFRTP bonded to the UHPC using EMAA (Surlyn) in a stamp thermoforming process. Impact tests conducted on these panels have shown that delamination has been the initial and detrimental failure to the sandwich composite. Increasing the composites resistance to debonding will increase the impact energy required to debond the composite. In this …

On The Application Of Dynamical Measures Of Hydrologic Response To Prediction And Similarity Assessment In Watersheds, Prashanta Bajracharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Prediction in Ungauged Basins (PUB) initiative set out to improve the understanding of hydrological processes with an aim of improving hydrologic models for application in ungauged basins. With a majority of basins around the world essentially ungauged, this suggests the need to shift from calibration-based models that rely on observed streamflow data to models based on process understanding. This is especially important in natural infrastructure planning projects such as investments in the conservation of wetlands across the watershed, where the lack of streamflow data hinders the quantification of their benefits (such as flood attenuation), resulting in a difficulty in …

Understanding Hydrologic Risk Within The Context Of Climate Variability And Atmospheric Moisture Pathways, Ali Aljoda May 2021

Understanding Hydrologic Risk Within The Context Of Climate Variability And Atmospheric Moisture Pathways, Ali Aljoda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nonstationarity in the means and extremes of water resources (e.g., streamflow) due to climate change presents challenges to water resources management and planning. Changes in hydrologic variables such as streamflow critically impact infrastructure, water use planning and adaptation strategies, and can lead to increased societal vulnerability. As such, existing water resources infrastructure designed based on limited records of historical flow may deteriorate under future hydro-climatic changes. Thus, important scientific tasks are: a) examining and redefining the risk, reliability, and return periods under nonstationary conditions, b) understanding the changes in extreme events statistics (i.e. frequency, and magnitude), and c) linking these …

Floating breakwaters offer the advantages of adapting to rising sea level, allowing important material transport to occur, and being able to deploy and adapt to varying environmental conditions (seabed, depth, etc.). Traditional floating breakwaters typically consist of reflective concrete structures that are limited semi-sheltered locations. This research aimed to construct floating breakwaters out of lightweight materials with a smaller footprint while utilizing alternative attenuation mechanisms. Three breakwaters consisting of a box, beach, and pipe designs were constructed at 1:40 scale and tested in a …

Understanding The Influence Of Nonlinear Seas On Wind Generated Waves, Taylor L. Bailey Aug 2020

Understanding The Influence Of Nonlinear Seas On Wind Generated Waves, Taylor L. Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An understanding of the influence of wind of the surface on irregular waves is important for improving ocean forecasting models. While many studies have investigated the phenomenon of wind wave suppression on the surface of mechanically generated waves in the laboratory, few studies have investigated the occurrence of this phenomenon for irregular waves. Chen and Belcher (2000) developed the first model to predict the suppression of wind waves as a function of the steepness of the long wave on which they travel. The Chen and Belcher (2000) model however, was only validated using monochromatic waves, not irregular waves, which are …

Wave Attenuation Capacity Of Suspended Aquaculture Structures With Sugar Kelp And Mussels, Longhuan Zhu Aug 2020

Wave Attenuation Capacity Of Suspended Aquaculture Structures With Sugar Kelp And Mussels, Longhuan Zhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Large aquaculture systems may have the potential to damp wave energy for coastal protection. The performance of these systems are influenced by the dynamics of components such as flexible kelp blades and mussel droppers. In this thesis, the dynamics of kelp blades and mussel droppers were investigated with a consistent-mass cable model with focus on understanding the asymmetric motion of kelp blades. The results showed the asymmetric blade motion in symmetric waves is caused by the spatial asymmetry of the encountered wave orbital velocities due to blade displacements and the asymmetric action on the blade by vertical wave orbital velocities. …

An Investigation On The Effects Of Cellulose Nanofibrils On The Performance Of Cement Based Composites, Hosain Haddad Kolour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are hydrophilic biodegradable nanoparticles (typically, less than 0.2 mm in length and 20-50 nm in width) that can be extracted from various plants, trees, and recycled paper stock. Their low density, low toxicity, relatively low cost, high aspect ratio, and high specific surface enable functionalization. In this work, the effects of CNFs on selected properties of cement paste, mortar, and concrete were investigated. For the cement pastes, rheology tests using a simple rheometer showed a reduction in workability as CNF dosage increased. Free shrinkage tests showed an increase in shrinkage at high w/c ratios but a decrease …

A Laboratory Investigation Of Cement Based Materials With Cellulose Nanofibers, Parivash Takasi Dec 2019

A Laboratory Investigation Of Cement Based Materials With Cellulose Nanofibers, Parivash Takasi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cellulose Nanofibers (CNFs) are used as additives in cement-based products to modify their properties. Recent studies about the effects of CNFs on cement paste showed inconsistent results for several different important properties, including compressive strength and free shrinkage. There is reason to believe that the unsystematic results of the compressive strengths were affected by the lack of uniform dispersion of CNFs. As a potential remedy, two different mixing methods were applied. The first method used a basic mixer, but aggregates were added to the cement paste mixture to improve the blending process. The second method utilized a high-speed shear mixer …

Process Optimization Of Levulinic Acid Production From Seaweeds And Its Upgrading To Tdo Oil, Maurvin Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Levulinic acid (LA) is a platform chemical and it can be upgraded to various products like bio-oil. The acid hydrolysis of cellulose is a widely researched pathway to make LA. However, investments to produce LA commercially can be subjected to risks due to feedstock price volatility and high processing costs. Such risks can be reduced by expanding the feedstock portfolio to produce LA from feedstock beyond wood and improving the energy efficiency of the process. One little investigated feedstock for production of LA is macro algae (seaweed). Seaweed is potentially attractive because it has low content of lignin or 5 …

Perspectives On Water Resources Risk, Policy, And Stewardship, Anne Marie Lausier May 2019

Perspectives On Water Resources Risk, Policy, And Stewardship, Anne Marie Lausier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Water management approaches have historically optimized water for human use and placed lower emphasis on the relationship between ecosystems and humans. Despite efforts to balance human and ecosystem needs, existing management approaches tend to prioritize some needs, knowledges, and values over others. Natural and anthropogenic changes pose challenges to water governance institutions due to policy inflexibility, and may lead to ecosystem degradation, water stress, and conflict among water users. This work seeks to redress these shortcomings through three scholarly contributions. First, a conceptual framework for Water Resources Stewardship is developed in support of equitable and adaptive solutions under changing conditions. …

Tidal And Subtidal Processes At The Mouth Of A Macrotidal Estuary, Rachel Chambers May 2019

Tidal And Subtidal Processes At The Mouth Of A Macrotidal Estuary, Rachel Chambers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Secondary flows and mixing have been shown to influence sediment transport, the vertical salinity gradient, and the exchange flow in estuaries. Typically, these hydrodynamic properties are investigated with respect to time and depth and their variability across the estuary is neglected. However, recent studies have shown that secondary flows and mixing, along with mechanisms that influence them, can exhibit lateral variability. Additionally, the variability of these hydrodynamic properties has not been studied in macrotidal estuaries, where the increased tidal forcing could affect the strength and cross channel variability.

There are two primary objectives of this thesis. The first objective is …

The Dynamics Of Mixing And Subtidal Flow In A Maine Estuary, Kristopher Bears May 2018

The Dynamics Of Mixing And Subtidal Flow In A Maine Estuary, Kristopher Bears

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Long-term material transport in estuaries is largely controlled by subtidal flow. Subtidal flows are driven by conditions specific to their geographic location, namely river discharge, tidal forcing, and wind. These conditions are further modified by mixing, curvature of the estuary, Coriolis, and friction. While many practices of measuring these various forcing mechanisms exist, the current literature fails to provide a standard for measuring turbulent mixing in well- mixed estuaries. As a changing climate affects these various forcing and modifying mechanisms via sea level rise and increased precipitation, the corresponding material transport scheme is expected to change accordingly. Subtidal flow and …
