This presentation was part of my unpublished research experience in a CTLE Faculty Learning Community (FLC) during the 2017-2018 academic year. It involved incorporating meteorological sensors in Unmanned Aerial Systems (or UAS) in the pedagogical context of meteorology courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Prescott, AZ. The FLC planned the incorporation of UAS sensors and working with the subsequent recorded data into courses during the Fall 2017 semester, implemented the planning during the Spring 2018 semester, and concretely planned to continue similar data gathering activities in future iterations of the courses.

The Effect Of A Computing-Focused Linked-Courses Learning Community On Minority And Female Students, Amber Settle, James Doyle, Theresa Steinbach

While enrollments in computing degrees and courses have grown rapidly in the past decade, both female and minority male students remain underrepresented in computing programs. This makes recruitment and retention of these populations a continuing concern. Affinity for a major is connected to student retention, and learning communities have proven effective for this purpose. We present an evaluation of a three-year linked-courses learning community in which we measure pre- to post-quarter changes in student attitudes and resource utilization. Wireless networks and information traffic have grown exponentially over the last decade. Consequently, an increase in demand of radio frequency bandwidth has resulted. Recent studies have shown that with the current fixed spectrum allocation, there are spectrum holes that are not utilized all the time by the licensed users while other frequency channels, such as Wi-Fi, are heavily used. Despite a rebound in enrollments, men of color and women remain underrepresented in computing. The literature indicates that student-student interaction, affinity for the computing major, and reduced feelings of isolation are important for retention of underrepresented groups in computing. Learning communities connect students with each other and faculty to improve collaboration, interaction, and enthusiasm. In wireless communications, transmitted signals are distorted by noise, interference, path loss, and fading. Traditional communication systems include hardware based filters that are bulky, costly, and can filter only specific frequencies. Next generation communication systems, such as Cognitive Radios, will be reconfigurable and can dynamically adjust their parameters to filter any signal of any frequency. Therefore, this project aims to develop efficient reconfigurable algorithms for filters that meet the requirements of next generation communication systems.

A multi-tier architecture is under development (with similar craft heterogeneity to Fink's work on ‘tier scalable’ missions) which will facilitate autonomous local control of multiple heterogeneous craft. This mission architecture has been developed with a Mars mission in mind and has included CubeSats in a variety of critical mission roles.

Two concepts will be presented: the addition of CubeSats to a larger-scale multi-tier mission, where the CubeSats serve a supporting role and a mission driven by CubeSat orbital capabilities. The prevailing wisdom in the film and video production industries is that audio information outweighs visual information when it comes to spectator responses, but there are few empirical studies to support this claim. In previous research, four critical characteristics of sound have been identified: (1) Music, (2) visual/sound contradictions (defined as sound that is inconsistent with audience expectations based on visual information), (3) multi-channel sound, and (4) sound quality. This presentation will provide an overview of work performed at the University of North Dakota with regards to the characterization of educational benefits from small spacecraft development efforts. We report on efforts to characterize benefits that ensued from participation for personal extracurricular enrichment, as part of a formal class (on project management), as part of multiple senior design projects, for independent study credit and for satisfying class project requirements. Over the last decade, there has been a growth in the video game industry and, at the same time, game degree programs at postsecondary institutions worldwide have grown in quantity and quality. Representation of gender and race in games and in the game industry workforce is an important issue. We explore this topic in our research, providing an overview of the demographics of undergraduate students in game degree programs in the United States and the United Kingdom.
