Optimum Synthesis Of Solvent-Based Post-Combustion Co2 Capture Flowsheets Through A Generalized Modeling Framework, Theodoros Damartzis, Athanasios Papadopoulos, Panos Seferlis
Sakis Papadopoulos
A generalized framework for the optimal design of post-combustion CO2 capture processes based on a systemic and flexible equilibrium separation model that employs orthogonal collocation on finite elements techniques is proposed. Within this context, a column section of adaptive separation capability and functionality serves as the fundamental structural block for the identification of efficient separation schemes. Separation column sections in combination with heat transfer blocks, as well as stream splitters and mixers enable the generation and evaluation of alternative flowsheet configurations within a nonlinear optimization program. The main objectives for the flowsheet evaluation involve separation and thermal efficiency that eventually …

On The Multiple Solutions Of The Reactive Distillation Column For Production Of Fuel Ethers, José Enrique Jaime-Leal, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernández, Salvador Hernández, Héctor Hernández-Escoto
Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet
A systematic study of the operating conditions and parameter sensibility of multiple steady states in a reactive distillation column for production of fuel ethers is presented. The multiplicity analysis is performed using bifurcation diagrams for several scenarios using the process simulator Aspen One Aspen Plus. Our results indicate that the main variables that affect both the presence and behavior of multiple solutions in the reactive distillation column are the reflux ratio, the reboiler duty and the thermal condition in the feed stream. In particular, we have determined that the vapor-liquid stream in the feed has a major influence on the …

Design, Optimization And Control Of An Alternative Process Based On Extractive Distillation For The Sweetening Of Natural Gas, Carlos E. Torres-Ortega, Juan Gabriel Segovia-Hernandez, Fernado I. Gomez-Castro, Salvador Hernandez, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet, Ben-Guang Rong, Massimiliano Errico
Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet
Alternative configurations based on cryogenic extractive distillation for the natural gas sweetening process were proposed and simulated by using Aspen Plus One 7.0 coupled to a multi-objective stochastic optimization procedure (Differential Evolution, DE). The evaluation of the performances of the proposed configurations was focused on the carbon dioxide-ethane azeotrope separation considering different liquefied hydrocarbon fractions as entrainers. The design alternatives were compared to the conventional chemical absorption system. The proposed sequences were simultaneously optimized by minimizing the Total Annual Cost (TAC) and maximizing the acid gas removal. Complementary studies regarding the theoretical control properties, thermodynamic efficiency and greenhouse gases generation …

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Wojciech Budzianowski
This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.

Hybrid renewable power generation systems considering storage of energy and/or hydrogen involve considerable complexity as heterogeneous equipment need to be interconnected and activated or deactivated at different time instances. This work employs generic and flexible decision making models to develop complex power/hydrogen management strategies and investigate their performance on systems integrating multiple power generation and storage devices. These models significantly facilitate the analysis of both a standalone power generation and storage system forming a microgrid currently in operation as well as three interconnected microgrids of different functionalities considered in this work. These systems are used to investigate the performance of …
Determination Of Kinetic Parameters From The Thermogravimetric Data Set Of Biomass Samples, Karol Postawa, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Determination Of Kinetic Parameters From The Thermogravimetric Data Set Of Biomass Samples, Karol Postawa, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Wojciech Budzianowski
This article describes methods of the determination of kinetic parameters from the thermogravimetric data set of biomass samples. It presents the methodology of the research, description of the needed equipment, and the method of analysis of thermogravimetric data. It describes both methodology of obtaining quantitative data such as kinetic parameters as well as of obtaining qualitative data like the composition of biomass. The study is focused mainly on plant biomass because it is easy in harvesting and preparation. Methodology is shown on the sample containing corn stover which is subsequently pyrolysed. The investigated sample show the kinetic of first order …

Determination Of Airborne Nanoparticles From Welding Operations, João F. Gomes
Determination Of Airborne Nanoparticles From Welding Operations, João F. Gomes
João F Gomes
The aim of this study is to assess the levels of airborne ultrafine particles emitted in welding processes (tungsten inert gas (TIG), metal active gas (MAG) of carbon steel and friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminium) in terms of deposited area in pulmonary alveolar tract using a Nanoparticle Surface Area Monitor (NSAM) analyzer. The obtained results showed the dependence from process parameters on emitted ultrafine particles and demonstrated the presence of ultrafine particles compared to background levels. Data indicated that the process that resulted in the lowest levels of alveolar deposited surface area (ADSA) was FSW, followed by TIG and …

Hydrogen Production From Biogas By Oxy-Reforming: Reaction System Analysis, Aleksandra Terlecka, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Wojciech Budzianowski
Oxy-reforming is emerging as an interesting alternative to conventional methods of hydrogen generation. The current article characterises this process through analysis of individual reactions: SMR (steam methane reforming), WGS (water gas shift) and CPO (catalytic partial oxidation). Analyses relate to optimisation of thermal conditions thus enabling cost-effectivenes of the process.

Assessment Of Exposure To Airborne Ultrafine Particles In The Urban Environment Of Lisbon, Portugal, João F. Gomes
João F Gomes
The aim of this study was the assessment of exposure to ultrafine in the urban environment of Lisbon, Portugal, due to automobile traffic, and consisted of the determination of deposited alveolar surface area in an avenue leading to the town center during late spring. This study revealed differentiated patterns for weekdays and weekends, which could be related with the fluxes of automobile traffic. During a typical week, ultrafine particles alveolar deposited surface area varied between 35.0 and 89.2 mm2/cm3, which is comparable with levels reported for other towns such in Germany and the United States. These measurements were also complemented …

Study On The Use Of Mgal Hydrotalcites As Solid Heterogeneous Catalysts For Biodiesel Production, João F. Gomes
João F Gomes
This paper, reports experimental work on the use of new heterogeneous solid basic catalysts for biodiesel production: double oxides of Mg and Al, produced by calcination, at high temperature, of MgAl lamellar structures, the hydrotalcites (HT). The most suitable catalyst system studied are hydrotalcite Mg:Al 2:1 calcinated at 507 ºC and 700 ºC, leading to higher values of FAME also in the second reaction stage. One of the prepared catalysts resulted in 97.1 % Fatty acids methyl esters (FAME) in the 1st reaction step, 92.2 % FAME in the 2nd reaction step and 34 % FAME in the 3rd reaction …
