James McCalley
This paper is the first of a two-part paper presenting a multiperiod generalized network flow model of the integrated energy system in the United States. Part I describes the modeling approach used to evaluate the economic efficiencies of the system-wide energy flows, from the coal and natural gas suppliers to the electric load centers. Under the proposed problem formulation, fuel supply and electricity demand nodes are connected via a transportation network, and the model is solved for the most efficient allocation of quantities and corresponding prices. The methodology includes physical, economic, and environmental aspects that characterize the different networks. Part …

A Platinum Nanowire Network As A Highly Effective Current Collector For Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Hanping Ding, Xingjian Xue
Xingjian "Chris" Xue
We report the fabrication and evaluation of a platinum nanowire network as a highly efficient current collector for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The ink of carbon-black supported platinum nanoparticles was sprayed onto the cathode. After firing, the carbon black was oxidized and disappeared as carbon dioxide gas while the platinum nanoparticles connect with one another, forming a tree-branch-like nanowire network. The diameters of the nanowires range from 100 nm to 400 nm. Compared to a conventional platinum paste current collector, the polarization resistance of the PrBaCo2O5+δ (PBCO) cathode with a nanowire current collector was reduced …

Implementation Of A Modified Perturb And Observe Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm For Photovoltaic System Using An Embedded Microcontroller, Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
Dr. Adel A. Elbaset
The conventional algorithm of perturb and observe (P&O) is widely applied due to its simplicity, low cost and easy implementation. However, it suffers from instabilities during rapid changes of weather and/or oscillation around maximum power point (MPP) at steady state. Instabilities occur due to the incorrect decision taken by the conventional P&O algorithm at the first step change in duty cycle during the rapid change in radiation. The reason for the steadystate oscillation is the continuous perturbation and tradeoff between step sizes and the convergence time. This study presents a modified P&O algorithm to overcome such drawbacks. It uses a …

Innovative Research Publications IRP India
In this paper, we compare the spatially adaptive iterative filtering (SAIF) approach with Weighted Encoding with Sparse Nonlocal Regularization (WESNR) to maintain the denoising strength locally for any spatial domain method. These approaches has ability of filtering local image content iteratively using the given base filter, and the type of iteration and the iteration number are automatically optimized with respect to estimated risk (i.e., mean squared error). Experimental result shows that approx. 7% enhancement in the SNR of SAIF method as compared to the WESNR method.
Hybrid Power Generation Systems: A Holistic View, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz
Hybrid Power Generation Systems: A Holistic View, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz
Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz
The importance of the hybrid power generation systems (HPGS) increased especially in the last few years. HPGS are used to share the load with the utility grid and these systems are termed as HPGS-utility grid. In addition, they are used to transmit the power to the remote areas. In this case, these systems are termed as stand-alone HPGS. HPGS consist of different power sources such as photovoltaic systems (PV), wind turbine (WT), micro-turbine (MT), storage battery (SB), diesel generator, and fuel cell (FC). These sources are considered the prominent elements. The importance of the HPGS can be carried out via …

Passive And Active Methods Of Islanding Detection For Grid Connected Pv Distributed Generators, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz
Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz
This study proposes a comparison between two islanding detection methods (IDMs) for grid-interconnected distributed generators (DG). The first method is a passive technique based on monitoring the frequency of the system and the rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) at the point of common coupling (PCC).The second method is an active technique based on the injection of a current waveform distortion to the original reference current of the inverter, to force a frequency drift in case of islanding operation. The test results show that there is a difference between the two techniques. Islanding detection methods are investigated, simulated and evaluated …

The Commission to Assess the threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse, on which I served as principal staff, made a compelling case for protecting critical infrastructure against the nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) caused by severe solar storms. Their 2008 Critical Infrastructure Report explains EMP effects, consequences, and protection means for critical infrastructure sectors. EMP and GMD are particularly challenging in that they interfere with electrical power and electronic data, control, transmission, and communication systems organic to nearly all critical infrastructures. The affected geography may be continental in scale. EMP and GMD events thus represent …

This paper presents a new approach for the optimal coordination of IDMT directional overcurrent relays in meshed power systems using a hybrid particle swarm optimization based differential evolution algorithm (PSO-DE). In protection coordination problem the total operating time of all main relays is minimized. Constraints of the problem are; backup relay should operate if primary relay fails to respond the fault near to it, Time Dial Setting (TDS) and Plug Setting (PS) and minimum operating time of relay. The operating time of IDMT directional overcurrent relays holds non-linear relationship with TDS and PS. The proposed hybrid optimization algorithm is to …

Modeling Of Chemical-Mechanical Couplings In Anode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cells And Reliability Analysis, Xinfang Jin, Xingjian Xue
Xingjian "Chris" Xue
Oxygen ionic transport in conducting ceramics is an important mechanism enabling solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology. The multi-physicochemical processes lead to the fact that the distribution of oxygen vacancy site fraction is not uniform in a positive-electrode electrolyte negative-electrode (PEN) assembly. Different oxygen vacancy concentrations induce different volumetric expansion of ceramics, resulting in complicated chemical–mechanical coupling phenomena and chemical stress in SOFCs. In this research, a mathematical model is developed to study oxygen ionic transport induced chemical stress in an SOFC. The model is validated using experimental polarization curves. Comprehensive simulations are performed to investigate chemical stress distribution in …
