Lighting Standards For Ship And Alternative Solutions For Energy Efficiency, Efe Akyurek
Lighting Standards For Ship And Alternative Solutions For Energy Efficiency, Efe Akyurek
MARENER 2017
Lighting has an important role amongst human life. In this respect, an adequate lighting on board gives moral, motivation also helps to improve safety and security for ships’ crew. This paper aims to both determine an adequate lighting for crew and bring energy efficiency with optimal lighting considering existing regulations on shipboard lighting. After a brief introduction, on the first part the preferred lighting tendencies to be discussed at maritime regulatory base including SOLAS, MLC with comparing ILO 92/133 Conventions. The second part initially defines optimal lighting for crew accommodation and working areas with demonstrating an example on a river …
Overcoming The Challenges To Maritime Energy Efficiciency In The Caribbean Region, Deniece Aiken
Overcoming The Challenges To Maritime Energy Efficiciency In The Caribbean Region, Deniece Aiken
MARENER 2017
Maritime energy efficiency in the Caribbean appears to be predicated on two key requirements; regulatory controls over the vessels operating in the region and the availability and use of efficient technology. While many Caribbean territories have ratified MARPOL AnnexVI, implementation of the standards therein, presents challenges that are familiar to maritime administrators of the region. These challenges include insufficient resources and inadequate implementation of relevant standards. These issues have traditionally plagued the region. The paucity of data and monitoring in this part of the world also contributes to ineffective policy interventions. There is also a need to identify the gap …

The Law Of Conservation Of Energy Towards Defining Maritime Cluster Dynamics, Peter J. Stavroulakis, Stratos Papadimitriou, Ioannis Koliousis
MARENER 2017
Industrial clusters have for many decades been considered as the stepping stone for regional and national competitiveness, due to the fact that within these systems of economies, many propitious qualities seem to flourish. Competition and cooperation are witnessed to complement one another, firms can thrive through the marvels of knowledge creation and innovation, and positive externalities are seen to blossom into an interconnected system of collective prosperity. This system bears semblance to many occurrences in nature, and thus can guide the reflection of natural dynamics that may pave an industrial cluster’s threads. Maritime clusters in particular, are distinct vanguards of …
Costs And Benefits Of Lng Economic Development In The Baltic And Arctic Regions, Fabio Ballini, Lawrence Kuroshi
Costs And Benefits Of Lng Economic Development In The Baltic And Arctic Regions, Fabio Ballini, Lawrence Kuroshi
MARENER 2017
Global warming is becoming increasingly evident. However, rising temperatures also offer new economic opportunities, such as new maritime routes in previously ice-locked waters. Valuable minerals in the Arctic region are also becoming more accessible. Maritime stakeholders are therefore seeking to operate in this remote region safely and efficiently. Accommodating these developments from a regulatory standpoint, IMO has amended the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) to include Chapter 9 of Annex I, prohibiting the use of heavy-grade marine fuels as well as heavy-duty oils as cargo carriage in the seas beyond 60th parallel south. In addition, …
Energy Awareness – Do We Need A Definition In Order To Implement It Onboard?, Signe Jensen
Energy Awareness – Do We Need A Definition In Order To Implement It Onboard?, Signe Jensen
MARENER 2017
Energy optimization and the awareness about the issue has become an important topic in the maritime industry. An energy management study from 2015 performed by DNV GL, shows that energy awareness has moved from rank fifteen to be the most important measure to be implemented as a success factor to realize actual savings. However - What exactly is energy awareness, and how can it be defined and implemented? Are Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP), noon reports and decision support software the right tools to raise awareness and improve energy efficiency for all shipping companies. Previous studies show that smaller …

Energy Consumption Of Small Scale Fishing Vessel Operations In Indonesia: A Case Study In Palabuhanratu, Indonesia, Vita R. Kurniawati, Richard W. Birmingham, Alan J. Murphy
MARENER 2017
About 79% of the global fishing fleet is small motorized boats typically operating in coastal areas, supplying local markets, and contributing to human well-being through food supplies and economic development. For example, Indonesian fisheries which predominantly are artisanal fishing, have supported 54% of animal protein intake, accounted for 2% of employment level and increased the fishermen’s prosperity index by 2.44%. However, they cause significant environmental impacts including fish resource depletion and intensive energy use. Balancing the benefits and challenges, sustainably managing these fishing operations is an important yet complex task given the requirements to proportionally account for fish resources, fishing …
