Wind/Hydro Generator Simulator, Michael Timothy Djaja, Christopher James Rotsios Jun 2018

Wind/Hydro Generator Simulator, Michael Timothy Djaja, Christopher James Rotsios

Electrical Engineering

The intention of this project is to make it easier for people without reliable access to electricity to implement their own sources of electrical generation. The ability to simulate different sources of generation allows people in need to find what source of generation will most properly meet their electricity needs. The goal of this project was to provide a wind or water flow profile from any area in the world and output a corresponding amount of power that would be expected from a small-scale wind or hydro generator. Due to difficulties with the microcontroller and incorrect sizing of components, this …

Power Protection Analysis For A Ten Bus System, Sean Hanna Dec 2015

Power Protection Analysis For A Ten Bus System, Sean Hanna

Electrical Engineering

Each power system built in the industry requires a protection plan. Undetected faults in a power system can contribute to hazardous conditions, overheating of power devices, low or high system voltages, unbalanced conditions, and blackouts. This senior project is the design of a protection plan for a power system using the software Electric Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP). With ten buses, five transformers, two generators, two motors, and six transmission lines, there are many possibilities for a fault to occur. The Load flow and fault analysis are studied before the system is protected. All components of the system are protected using …

The Zephyr Charge: A Wind-Powered Usb Charger, James Dean Carson, John Pina Lopez Iii Jun 2015

The Zephyr Charge: A Wind-Powered Usb Charger, James Dean Carson, John Pina Lopez Iii

Electrical Engineering

The Zephyr Charge project is to design and build a cell phone charger using a small wind turbine generator that can be useful to the fishermen community, namely fishermen of third world countries. The generator will output to USB for ease of charging capability. The size of the whole system should be light enough to move around, and the turbine itself will be mountable onto an edge of a wall. The goal of this project is to design and build a compact and easy to use cell phone charger, which is also efficient.

In order to be a practical product, …

Veloelectric: Creating A Device That Harvests Energy From Bicycles, Austin Hall, Daniel Stohr, Tj Fox Jun 2015

Veloelectric: Creating A Device That Harvests Energy From Bicycles, Austin Hall, Daniel Stohr, Tj Fox

Mechanical Engineering

Long distance mountain bikers, bike-packers, and many bikers in developing countries rely on electrical devices for safety and communication. These specific groups of people operate in areas with little to no electricity, and often times have no power to sustain their devices. The purpose of this Cal Poly senior project, VeloElectric, was to design, build, and test a kinetic energy harvester for bicycles that can be used to charge common mobile devices via USB. This senior project team created a device that attaches directly to a bicycle and uses vibrations to generate energy, which in turn powers a variety of …

Merry-Go-Round Human Powered Generator, Daniel Barnicle, Dario Romero Jun 2013

Merry-Go-Round Human Powered Generator, Daniel Barnicle, Dario Romero

Electrical Engineering

This project entails the design and construction of a Merry-Go-Round Human Powered Generator for the DC House project. The Merry-Go-Round Human-Powered-Generator is a sustainable project focusing on utilizing renewable human mechanical energy. As young children play on the Merry-Go-Round, the generator converts the mechanical energy to electrical energy for the DC House. The Merry-Go-Round Generator boosts the generated voltage output to power a battery. This electrical energy then transfers from the battery to the DC House to provide power to it.

Wind Power Generator Design For The Dc House Project, Evan Lim, Samson Liu Jun 2011

Wind Power Generator Design For The Dc House Project, Evan Lim, Samson Liu

Electrical Engineering

The purpose of this project is to introduce a cost efficient alternative in converting wind into energy for third world countries. Currently there are approximately 1.6 billion people who have limited access to electricity. As part of the DC House project, we hope to develop a solution for them as the use of electricity is becoming an essential part of life. One of the natural energy resources to provide power to the DC House is wind. The components used for the project are a DC motor and DC-DC converter to translate wind into power and produce DC voltage and current, …
