Effects Of Polymer-Nanoparticle Interactions On The Dynamics Of Attractive Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Nanocomposites, Walter W. Young Mar 2024

Effects Of Polymer-Nanoparticle Interactions On The Dynamics Of Attractive Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Nanocomposites, Walter W. Young

Doctoral Dissertations

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) had long been recognized as a critical building block for inorganic-organic hybrid materials with unique and desirable properties and performance. Through synthesis and characterization of polymer/POSS nanocomposites, direct insights into the significant effects of the polymer/POSS interactions on the resulting material properties are obtained. Random copolymers of a hydrogen-bond accepting monomer and a non-interacting monomer are synthesized and loaded with a model amine-functionalized hydrogen bond donating POSS molecule via solution casting, to create a material with well-controlled dynamical heterogeneity. The increase in the glass transition temperature (Tg) of these materials is found to strongly depend on …

Graphene Reinforced Polymer Composite For Small-Scale Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Rotors, Kunal A. Bachim Jan 2024

Graphene Reinforced Polymer Composite For Small-Scale Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Rotors, Kunal A. Bachim

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses

Polymers have evolved as an indispensable asset in various sectors ranging from packaging and construction to energy and aerospace. However, the accumulation of polymer waste poses a necessity to shift toward sustainable waste management processes. Mechanical recycling is a primary method in establishing a circular economy approach for polymers. However, a fundamental challenge arises in this process: a decrease in the mechanical performance of the recycled product compared to that of its pristine counterpart.

This project addresses the challenge of enhancing the recyclability of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from discarded polymer material by incorporating graphene nanoparticles into the polymer matrix during …

Analytical And Experimental Investigation Of Interphase And Dispersion Effects On The Mechanical Stiffness Of Cellulose Nanocomposites, Will Goldberg May 2023

Analytical And Experimental Investigation Of Interphase And Dispersion Effects On The Mechanical Stiffness Of Cellulose Nanocomposites, Will Goldberg

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The effect of dispersion and interphase properties on the elastic behavior of cellulose nanocomposites was investigated using a number of composite models, experimental data and a thorough literature review. Cellulose nanocomposites consisting of soy protein isolate (SPI) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) or polydopamine coated cellulose nanocrystals (PD-CNC) were prepared via solution casting method and tested for mechanical stiffness. These outcomes were compared to standard composite models as well as novel methods adapted from the literature that incorporate data regarding dispersion quality and interphase properties. The literature review verified that both dispersion and interphase properties are highly dependent on interfacial chemistry …

Determining The Efficacy Of A Silica And Bacterial Cellulose Composite Model System, Hannah Martin, Daisy Kamp Jun 2022

Determining The Efficacy Of A Silica And Bacterial Cellulose Composite Model System, Hannah Martin, Daisy Kamp

Materials Engineering

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based polymer films for synthetic leather applications. Synthesized by a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, BC is a three-dimensional structure composed of cellulose microfibrils. However, pure BC lacks certain desirable properties such as high tensile strength. Previous studies have shown that loading BC with nanoparticles to form nanocomposites has improved BC’s mechanical properties. However, this was not studied as a function of particle size. This study focuses on using silica/BC nanocomposites to model the impact that particle size and silica soaking concentrations have on the uptake efficiency of these particles into …

Tribological Studies Of Thick Polytetrafluoroethylene Coatings Enhanced By Polydopamine And Nanoparticles, Sujan Kumar Ghosh Jul 2021

Tribological Studies Of Thick Polytetrafluoroethylene Coatings Enhanced By Polydopamine And Nanoparticles, Sujan Kumar Ghosh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a popular low friction solid lubricant with high chemical and thermal stability. Thick PTFE coatings have the potential for many tribological applications, such as replacing Tin-based Babbitt materials in journal bearings. However, the weak bonding strength to the substrate and the high wear rate of PTFE coatings are current limiting factors. The lack of understanding of their tribological properties and wear mechanisms in oil-lubricated conditions and how coating thickness affects the tribological performance further hindered the use of PTFE coatings. In this dissertation, polydopamine (PDA), a bio-inspired adhesive, is used as an underlayer for or as a …

Development Of Cellulose Nanofiber Reinforced Poly(Methyl Methacrylate), Tyler Bennett Aug 2019

Development Of Cellulose Nanofiber Reinforced Poly(Methyl Methacrylate), Tyler Bennett

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Cellulose nanofiber (CNF), derived from renewable resources, is a good candidate to reinforce transparent plastics without sacrificing their transparency, owing to its size on the nano-meter scale, reflective index similar to the plastics’, excellent mechanical property, and low density. This study investigates effects of CNF on optical, viscoelastic, and thermal properties of CNF reinforced poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). CNF/PMMA with different CNF contents and different types of PMMA were prepared through a solvent casting method with a low toxic and inexpensive solvent, acetone, and compression-molded to create nanocomposite films. The films were characterized using a transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet–visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, …

Polyorganosiloxanes: Molecular Nanoparticles, Nanocomposites And Interfaces, Daniel H. Flagg Nov 2017

Polyorganosiloxanes: Molecular Nanoparticles, Nanocomposites And Interfaces, Daniel H. Flagg

Doctoral Dissertations

Five research projects described. First, a reproducible, lab-scale synthesis of MQ silicone copolymers is presented. MQ copolymers are commercially important materials that have been ignored by the academic community. One possible reason for this is the difficulty of controlling and reproducing the preparative copolymerizations that have been reported. A reproducible method for lab-scale preparation was developed that controls molecular weight by splitting the copolymerization into the discrete steps of sol growth from silicate precursor and end-capping by trimethylsiloxy groups. Characterization of MQ products implicates that they are composed of highly condensed, polycyclic structures. The MQ copolymers prepared in the first …

Studies On Nanocomposite Coating Produced By Laser-Assisted Process To Prevent Silicone Hydrogels From Bio-Fouling, Vishnuvardhana Wuppaladhodi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this thesis, silver nanoparticles incorporated into polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were deposited on silicone hydrogel to improve the hydrophilicity of the silicone hydrogel and prevent the growth of bacteria. Two different processes were employed to produce Ag nanoparticles: (1) Process-A is a photochemical reduction; (2) Process-B is laser ablation in liquid. Following that, MAPLE process was employed to deposit the Ag-PVP nanocomposites on the surface of silicone hydrogel. A solid-state pulsed laser (Nd:YAG) with a wavelength of 532 nm at a fluence of 50.4 mJ/cm2 was used in the MAPLE system to deposit Ag-PVP nanocomposite coating. Our results indicate that …

Morphology And Properties Of Nylon 6 Blown Films Reinforced With Different Weight Percentage Of Nanoclay Additives, Raghavendra R. Hegde Dr

Raghavendra R Hegde Dr

This article presents the effect of increasing weight percentage natural nanoclay additives on the structure, morphology and mechanical properties of nylon-6-blown films. Combination of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and microscopy were used to determine nanocomposite film morphology. The nanoclay additives in the films act as nucleating agent facilitates γ-crystalline forms and results in fine grained spherulite with smaller lamellar size. Increase in tensile, burst, and tear strength is observed for films with up to 5% clay loading. Even though microscale property like tensile and tear strength drops at higher add on levels, near-surface nanoscale hardness and toughness of the film …

Dielectric Nanocomposites: An Inside-Out Approach To Storing Electrostatic Energy, Stephen Ducharme

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The ability to achieve high-energy densities is the central challenge in energy storage and recovery. A promising strategy for increasing energy storage is to use highperformance dielectric materials, such as highly polarizable nanoparticles or polymers, or nanocomposites of the two. In this issue, Kim et al. use a molecular coating and clever chemistry to combine oxide nanoparticles with a polymer matrix, thereby producing an improved nanocomposite dielectric. Some advantages and challenges of using nanocomposites as improved dielectric materials are presented in this Perspective.
