Effect Of Organic Acids On Co2-Rock And Water-Rock Interfacial Tension: Implications For Co2 Geo-Storage, Ahmed Al-Yaseri, Nurudeen Yekeen, Muhammad Ali, Nilanjan Pal, Amit Verma, Hesham Abdulelah, Hussein Hoteit, Mohammad Sarmadivaleh

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

A small concentration of organic acid in carbon dioxide (CO2) storage formations and caprocks could significantly alter the wettability of such formations into less water-wet conditions, decreasing the CO2-storage potential and containment security. Recent studies have attempted to infer the influence of the organic acid concentration on the wettability of rock–CO2–brine systems by measuring advancing and receding contact angles. However, no studies have investigated the influence of organic acid contamination on CO2-storage capacities from rock-fluid interfacial tension (IFT) data because solid-brine and solid-CO2 IFT values cannot be experimentally measured. Equilibrium contact angles and rock-fluid IFT datasets were used to evaluate …

Hydrogen Flooding Of A Coal Core: Effect On Coal Swelling, Stefan Iglauer, Hamed Akhondzadeh, Hussein Abid, Adriana Paluszny, Alireza Keshavarz, Muhammad Ali, Ausama Giwelli, Lionel Esteban, Joel Sarout, Maxim Lebedev

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hydrogen is a clean fuel which has the potential to drastically decarbonize the energy supply chain. However, hydrogen storage is currently a key challenge; one solution to this problem is hydrogen geo-storage, with which very large quantities of H2 can be stored economically. Possible target formations are deep coal seams, and coal permeability is a key parameter which determines how fast H2 can be injected and withdrawn again. However, it is well known that gas injection into coal can lead to coal swelling, which drastically reduces permeability. We thus injected H2 gas into a coal core and measured dynamic permeability, …

Morphology Of Mos2 Nanosheets And Its Influence On Water/Oil Interfacial Tension: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Yang Feng, Jirui Hou, Yulong Yang, Shuting Wang, Dongsen Wang, Tingting Cheng, Zhenjiang You

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Plate-shaped nanoparticles exhibit huge potential for a broad range of cutting-edge applications in interfacial-based science and technology, such as enhanced oil recovery in hydrocarbon reservoirs, owing to their remarkable features in superior affinity toward interfaces. Understanding the adsorption behavior of nanosheets (NSs) self-assembled at the water/oil interface (W/O interface) is crucial to elucidate the variation of interfacial tension (IFT) and establish special design criteria for efficient industrial use of NSs. Here we present a molecular dynamics study to reveal the morphology of carbon-chain modified molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets. The stress exerted on a nanosheet is analyzed. The simulation …

Experimental Evaluation Of Liquid Nitrogen Fracturing On The Development Of Tight Gas Carbonate Rocks In The Lower Indus Basin, Pakistan, Muhammad Ali, Abdul Majeed Shar, Aftab Ahmed Mahesar, Ahmed Al-Yaseri, Nurudeen Yekeen, Khalil Rehman Memon, Alireza Keshavarz, Hussein Hoteit

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Tight gas carbonate formations have enormous potential to meet the supply and demand of the ever-growing population. However, it is impossible to produce from these formations due to the reduced permeability and lower marginal porosity. Several methods have been used to extract unconventional tight gas from these reservoirs, including hydraulic fracturing and acidizing. However, field studies have demonstrated that these methods have environmental flaws and technical problems. Liquid nitrogen (LN2) fracturing is an effective stimulation technique that provides sudden thermal stress in the rock matrix, creating vivid fractures and improving the petro-physical potential. In this study, we acquired …

Optimum Geological Storage Depths For Structural H2 Geo-Storage, Stefan Iglauer Jan 2022

Optimum Geological Storage Depths For Structural H2 Geo-Storage, Stefan Iglauer

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

H2 geo-storage has been suggested as a key technology with which large quantities of H2 can be stored and withdrawn again rapidly. One option which is currently explored is H2 storage in sedimentary geologic formations which are geographically widespread and potentially provide large storage space. The mechanism which keeps the buoyant H2 in the subsurface is structural trapping where a caprock prevents the H2 from rising by capillary forces. It is therefore important to assess how much H2 can be stored via structural trapping under given geo-thermal conditions. This structural trapping capacity is thus …

A New Comprehensive Dimensionless Inflow Performance Relationship For Gas Wells, Azim Kalantariasl, Isa Farhadi, Soosan Farzani, Alireza Keshavarz

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Prediction of gas well deliverability is important for reservoir management. Conventional flow after flow, isochronal or modified isochronal tests are common methods for calculation of well deliverability. Single-point test using Vogel-type dimensionless inflow performance relationships (IPR) was also proposed to overcome the need for multi-point tests. However, analysis of field data showed that existing dimensionless IPR correlations fail to accurately predict well deliverability for some reservoir conditions. In this study, a wide range of reservoir rock and fluid data was used to develop a comprehensive dimensionless IPR correlation for calculation of gas well deliverability from single-point test data. Multi-point well …

Application Of Benchtop Humidity And Temperature Chamber In The Measurement Of Water Vapor Sorption In Us Shales From Mancos, Marcellus, Eagle Ford And Wolfcamp Formations, Hesham Abdulelah, Berihun Mamo Negash, Atta Dennis Yaw, Tareq M. Al-Shami, Ahmed Al-Yaseri, Eswaran Padmanabhan Jan 2022

Al-Shami, Ahmed Al-Yaseri, Eswaran Padmanabhan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

A benchtop humidity and temperature chamber was used to assess water vapor sorption in four US shale samples at 90 °C. Water sorption isotherms were measured at relative humidity ranging from 10 to 99% and temperature of 90 °C. Shale fractal properties were then evaluated, and capillary pressure (ranging from 1.70 to 386 MPa) was obtained using Kelvin relationship. The results show that Mancos shale, from the US, adsorbed more absorbed water due to its high clay concentration and low TOC. However, Wolfcamp shale, from the US, has the lowest TOC and clay concentration, adsorbing the lowest amount of water. …
